“The Central British Fund was looking for volunteers who would go to Germany [...] for six months in order to work in what became known as the DP camps - the Displaced Persons camps. When the Jews were out of the concentration camps - and this is my gripe in a sort of a way - because everybody in the world knew immediately about all the six million that died - nobody ever asked a question about the survivors.

To commemorate World Refugee Day, we feature aid provider Lily Schwarzschild’s testimony. Lily was born in London, England in 1920. When World War II ended, Lily Schwarzschild joined the British Army’s Jewish Relief Unit to aid concentration camp survivors in British-occupied zones in Germany.
Lily was interviewed by USC Shoah Foundation in 1997.
Designated by the United Nations, World Refugee Day occurs internationally on June 20 to celebrate and remember those forced to flee their homes to escape persecution.
