Ruth Cohen had a childhood filled with family, friends, Hebrew school, and swimming in the Latorica River near her home. Then, in March 1944, at age 13, everything changed. Nazi Germany invaded Hungary, and authorities later forced Ruth and her family to move into a crowded ghetto. By mid-May, they began sending Jews from Hungary by train to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Soon after arriving at the killing center, Ruth learned the SS had already murdered her mother, brother, and little cousins.
Watch to learn how Ruth managed to survive, despite developing tuberculosis, and discover if she ever saw her father again.
Hear Holocaust survivor Ruth Cohen’s experiences in her own words recorded on January 17, 2024. First Person is a monthly hour-long discussion with a Holocaust survivor that is made possible through generous support from the Louis Franklin Smith Foundation.

Ruth’s audio was poor. But what I could make it was such a sad story for her and her family to have to go through. Never to be forgotten.

Thank you Ruth for sharing this most hurtful time in your life. Your experience are so very important for our generation to hear so no one can say it didn’t happen. Also thank you Bill for the outstanding job of interviewing your gusts. You are so kind and gentle with each gust which helps them during their difficult interviews. God bless you both.

Ruth, thank you for sharing your experiences with us during such a tragic time, the Holocaust. I'm sorry to hear about your mother and three siblings, that was awful. I am glad that your father, you, and sister, Teresa made and came to America to begin a new life. Indeed, the world should never forget, and we should always fight to keep anti-Semitism out and love in. ❤🙏

Ruth, thank you for sharing your story ❤. My grandfather that fought in WW2 was also born on April 26, but he was born in 1924😊

So much echo, unfortunately made it very hard listening. Such a shame because really wanted to hear Ruth. Thank you.

Wondering if y'all have condemned the ethnic displacement of Palestinian people or made any statements on the current atrocities happening in Gaza and the West Bank?

@ariesgosserow4060 this was a video about the Holocaust. Your virtue signalling is not appropriate here. Show some respect.

@ariesgosserow4060 'free ride'? It is clear from this profoundly shameful remark that you are truly lost.
