True, many local restaurants have a tip jar at the "to go" window & some chains like Longhorn encourage it if you use their drive up service. Panera Bread was doing it with all orders for a while but was dropped.

I use to work for a restaurant, I won't say the name but it "famous", they cater out often and charge a delivery fee that 100% goes to the company and the person catering the event hopes they get a tip after 2-4 hours of cater service.

I used to be a strong tipper. I started really scaling back in the past year. For one, service has gone to absolute lows. The workers make it clear they have no desire to be there and they will take it out on you. Second, the service has gone up about double the price. And third, you’re asked to tip literally everywhere now even at the gas station and McDonald’s. No thanks.

As a 20 year bartender I will tell you my secret to good tips: Give everyone 100% customer service, even those that you know tip $0. People have eyes and ears, and if you give them good service and give everyone around them good service, they will recognize your effort. Treat everyone with respect and love. Every server I've ever know that complains about not getting good tips normally aren't giving 100% good service. Don't let one bad table or one bad night get you down. Stick with it and it evens out in the wash.

I averaged about $10/ hr with tips back in the late 1970's. Busy times I could make almost $20/hr. Tipping was recommended to be 7.5%. And meal prices were much, much lower back then. Prices are much higher now and 15% is nuts, no one needs that much.

Tipping is rooted in workers going above and beyond the service you paid for. It makes sense in a country like the USA because people provide so many luxury based services. The problem is, it is now expected, even when the service is mediocre or sub par. You should always get good service, regardless of tipping. Kneeled down to take our order, checked on us frequently, kept our drinks full, and took the time to actually talk to us (which he did with all his tables). I noticed that he looked a little disappointed after the table next to us left and he looked at the receipt, and I asked him if they stiffed him. He said they left him $2 (its a mid price seafood restaurant). I told him I served in college and he said he was studying Marine Biology at the local university and we talked for a little bit. I left him $100 on a meal that cost about $45-50. The good servers need to be rewarded for the effort they put in or they will get burnt out too.

Then, after far too long and me looking annoyed someone's like "did you have an order?". And I'm like "Yeah, that one right on your screen in front of you". I've also seen where they are backed up some in the lobby. There is an obvious issue in the back that makes things significantly slower. Instead of just a general message to the customers saying "We apologize for the wait, it's going to be a few extra minutes because xyz", they'll just turn their backs to the customers. Then several customers get mad. Out of every 6 fast food employees, one would be great and have to make up the work of the other 5 crap employees. Then they get frustrated, rightly so, and leave. Or you will see a manager in the back that just barks orders and doesn't lead at all. All they do is b*tch. Then, after the situation has passed, they still keep complaining to the employee. If you want to know how well a restaurant is, look at the managers. I've seen places with great managers. My parents recently came into town and wanted to take my family to lunch, asked where was good, i told them there were a couple of places with good food, but service was terrible pretty much everywhere. (Except chick fil a and in n out.) We went to a sit down restaurant, afterwards my mom told me i was right; good food, terrible service and they would never eat there again.

I just moved to Japan from Southern California. The service is incredibly good here--they just put more energy into everything, and nobody accepts tips. I used to hate having to consider how much I would tip. I am supposed to be enjoying myself. Why do I have to make decisions like that? Delivery people also accept no tips. I had sushi delivered last night in fancy lacquered containers. They come the next morning to pick up the plates. No charge.

A lot of places there isn’t even service anymore, and they expect a tip. I went to a frozen yogurt place, that was an assembly line where you build your own with toppings, then they charge you based on what it weights at the end, and you swipe your card to pay. It asked for a tip and it was literally to-go with no dishes for them, that I made myself, and paid for myself lol

Some American habits are so weird. A tip is....a tip, not an obligation. In addition to that, this habit is one of the main reasons why restaurants get away with paying sh*t wages! (ps. I've been a waiter).
@eyesuckle

Exactly! Here's what I would do if I were King: I would publish an edict saying, "In three months henceforth, all restaurant prices will be raised 15%. That 15% will go directly to the wait staff. From that day on, there will be no tipping--unless you have some personal burning desire to do so." Then I will no longer have to do math homework after every restaurant meal. Nor will I have to subsidize all the fucking cheapskates who currently tip nothing no matter how good the service is. Problem solved.

Leaving a tip for a sit down restaurant is much different than going to Starbucks, subway, jimmy johns and they are asking for a tip. You don’t get tipped for fast food. You’re doing your job, not providing waiters service. Not sure where this came from outside of sit down places

I managed a sit down restaurant and one waitress killed it every night she worked. Unfortunately the owner pissed her off not wanting to work with her during a family crisis and she quit. She easily brought $1500 of business in on a light week. Within a year the business was closed due to the owner. He chased off all the stars I worked on hiring from the head cook to the busser and 2 waiteesses. I learned customer service as a pizza delivery driver during college. I regularly got tips from customers who normally didn't.

In my hometown there was a Mexican restaurant. I would sit in a booth around lunch studying for college. I would buy a chicken quesadilla and fill up on chips. The waitress was amazing and would let me stay there. Years later, now that I have money when I go back, I'll tip almost 100%. I've moved to another state, but we knew all the staff, watched their kids grow up and start working in the restaurant. They knew my kids' names as well. It very much had a "Cheers" vibe. My baseline tip starts at 20%. If I have to keep asking for the same thing repeatedly or have to keep flagging down the server just to get basic service...it goes down.

Are you saying you took up her booth for hours studying, starting during the busy lunch rush, stopping her from making money? That was really bad. One thing I've learned as a hotel bartender who places the orders, makes the drinks, runs the food, busses, delivers the check all by myself for the entire dining area and full patio the main thing my guests appreciate is a server who can take and give sarcastic banter! Having quick whit is vital. Must have talent in a way that respectfully puts the bullies on their place! I don't know how servers can make a living or have fun at their job without this. BTW, I make a killing every night and get many many guest commendations!

A bartender buddy of mine gave me this little nugget of info one night when the topic of tipping came up in our late night convos, he said that TIPS is an acronym "To Insure Prompt Service!" good service good tip bad service bad tip, it has severed me well on both sides of the bar and table.

I use to tip 25% or more all the time but post pandemic I tip at 15-20% and stopped tipping completely at Dunkin and Starbucks. I go to Dunkin every single day and since the pandemic the level of service there, we’ll everywhere, has gone into the shitter. I’ve had to turn around and go into the store after going through the drive through so many times because my order is wrong. I tell you exactly the way I want it, you repeat it back to me correctly, I see it displayed correctly on the screen, and yet when I physically get it it’s wrong. WTF. The people are a bunch of complete assholes with piss poor attitudes and no sense of urgency what so ever. I finally was like that’s it I’m not tipping shit anymore. I wonder if that survey is including the "new tipping" venues, such as the fast food chains. Those might be bringing down the average. In years past those surveys didn't include tips at Subway, McDonalds, Ice Cream places, etc.. Now that we're being asked to tip people who are being paid on a non-server salary, i think that has dropped down the average, but normal restaurants are probably still getting what they did years ago.

Most of my 60 year life, 10% - 15% was the norm for tipping. I would give 20% for outstanding service. Waitstaff were also tipped because they earned less than minimum wage. My state a couple years ago raised the wages for everyone to minimum so it dis-incentivizes tipping.
