If you both receive full state pension no matter if you have no private pension or savings you can't receive pension credit, my friend is better off because she didn't work so her pension is made up with pension credit her husband received full state pension, take in account they receive rate rebate water rebate cost of living payment free dentist and winter heating allowance make me wonder why I worked we are only £50 short , we have never ever been in a benefit and now can't even get a bit of help to keep warm my husband worked 51 years in the cold now he will sit in the cold can't afford to heat our old house,may be we would be better living in a hotel having everything paid for
The reason people pay tax on their private pension is because they dont pay tax on it when it is removed from their wages. You dont pay tax on the state pension as the money taken for that is done after you have already paid tax.

We need a strong opposition leader to call a Vote of No Confidence in the Government just as Maggie Thatcher did in 1979 when she called the vote against Jim Callaghan's Labour Govt. Not all qualify for pension credit even although they already struggle to make ends meet. Their health will deteriorate because they can't afford heating. I agree, but we will find that Reeves and Starmer will both be protected by law from either murder or manslaughter, as it will not be done directly by their own hand, only as a result of their policy, which itself should be unlawful but of course is not. There will be no triple lock once the rate of inflation rises again, nor will there be free medication for very much longer either. What Reeves seems to forget is pensioners had a £600 help package last year because of the cost of living crisis, this year many will get nothing in the way of help and the energy price cap is rising by 10% in October 2024. There is a very distinct possibility of the old perishing from hyperthermia this coming winter.

You must prepare now, do not get sick, look after your health, get extra warm clothes and blankets, exercise if you can and most importantly if you can then find a support network. I work in care and I can tell you now I see this far too much already. You must prepare and have a plan. Don't be afraid to ask for help even from your neighbours as believe it or not there are some true human beings out there who don't like to see people suffer. Unfortunately, our government ain't about that.

Why is the old age pension less than the living wage, a great question for Labour as every one has to face the same livings costs unless the are paid an MP's salary and expences!!!

Govt pension is less than half the national living wage and many pensioners spend their days confined to their homes and so need extra heating and will be hit with the double-whammy of no winter fuel payment and increased energy costs.
A cynic might say a cull of pensioners will bring tax revenues through IHT, CGT taxes, Stamp Duty from house sales, stimulus from inheritances - a real economic boost to Labour.

I worked hard all my life and only managed to pay into a small work pension in the last years before retirement. I get the basic state pension plus a small work pension and am always just above the limit for any benefits, therefore this stopping winter fuel payment is a nightmare, stop and think again. At least pay everyone the new state pension, that may help!!! Last time I vote Labour.

So when he criticized the last government for permitting these price increase, he has just accepted them in the same way. British old age pensioners hardship allowance 0.00 ZERO, illegal immigrants living in Britain allowance 100 pounds, a British old age pensioners total benefit 6,000.00 pounds and NOW no Winter fuel allowance thanks to this robbing lot, total ILLEGAL immigrant living in OUR county 29,900pounds. I cannot verify that these figures are 100% correct but in my investigation into where our tax goes they are somewhere near.
in the past five years alone. ms reeves claimed £3,700 towards her energy bills, on top of her £91,346 salary and other housing expenses. this sum is 2.5 higher than how much a pensioner could have received over the same period in winter fuel.
The real problem is that the oil companies have more power than the government. They are dictating the price we have to pay for energy, but made 50 Billion in profit last year. The UK government needs to get a grip on this.
I agree it was silly to give the winter fuel payment to millionaires and there should be a cap but not as low as she has put it. Pension credit is paid to people who dont get the full state pension to bring them up to the same level of income and they get the payment, yet the people who have worked all their lives so get the full pension (and no more) are on the same income but dont get the payment!,
I'm sure all of us pensioners could turn up at council offices, court viewing areas, doctors waiting rooms and AandE areas and even illegal migrant hotels, as I am sure the heating thermostats will be turned up
