We scoff at how older people can't tell they are being scammed by emails and callers. But younger people are definitely unable to tell which content is real and which is fake. We automatically believe anything on social media, and think we could never fall for it. But with rage bait, clickbait, AI, etc. It's clear we can't tell the difference.

They certainly helped make it very popularized! It’s been a thing for pretty much as long as the Internet has been a thing and even before that (an easy example is tabloids in magazines) it’s just that it’s on such a large scale now and very mainstream. I think it was previously mostly sequestered to niche media, interests, audiences, regions, etc.

The scary ones for me are the people posting 'cleaning' content where they put like 50 cleaning products in their toilets, often mixing bleach and ammonia which creates a toxic gas. I was just about to comment this! Rage baiting completely aside, the real crime is the wastefulness of the food these people buy - primarily the people who make those rage bait recipes, because I’d like to think that the first mom rage baiting her cheaper by the dozen kids’ food hauls for their mini fridges will get eaten somehow. But the recipes? Likely all thrown out which is just awful.

@Solonneysa
@Solonneysa 6 месяцев назад
I think the problem is that there are still children, and individuals, who aren't able to distinguish rage-bait, and the algorithm feeds off of their ignorance. A massive hoard of 5-18 year old might not understand the consequences of interacting with a rage-bait video. It gets passed around and the video shoots up. Unless there's some way to filter the videos from ignorant viewers there's no way to stop it from being profitable. Heck, half the time the video isn't obviously rage bait until partway through and a person might watch it and think "What did I just watch?" too late. So, basically, it's awesome that you found a way to protect yourself, but it's not really an effective strategy for combating the rage-farmers. :(

When I worked in retail we would get reviews, and I quickly learned people are quick to complain but slow to compliment, rage baiting just feeds on this concept.
@elnino8522
@elnino8522 6 месяцев назад
It's the same with restaurants. People don't feel inclined to leave a review if they have a positive experience since that is what they expected/they don't have the time to be bothered. However a negative experience immediately warrants the effort of leaving a complaint/review. Which is probably why a lot of restaurants have to actively ask for reviews after each table.

What concerns me in the foster-adopt family is that they are promising stuff to children who have trauma, and then taking that away from them. I even got depressed thinking about the amount of words I've forgotten in both my mother tongue and English after being the best student in my class and pursuing knowledge in any way I could, that I stopped paying attention to how I expressed myself and it's been going on for a long time now. Your eloquence and the way you are able to articulate your thoughts with ease have inspired me and rekindled that old spark in me, so here I am, doing some vocabulary exercises while listening to you talk. This is a beautiful gift you have, to inspire, inform and motivate people to be better, do better and make better choices, perhaps in ways you might not expect. Thank you ❤

Almost a decade ago, a friend who is in tech, explained to me how engagement works. Since then, I've been very selective about how I engage with the internet, especially social media platforms. I used to warm people to be careful about what they "liked", and everyone told me I was a reactionary. It's funny how many times I've been called that, and it turned out to be true. Those of us who are more sensitive, through nature or trauma, are canaries in the coalmine for these things, and I've learned to trust my instincts.

Exactly. When I was on tiktok, (not anymore), my for you page slowly turned into a “please like and share this video so we can afford healthcare treatment” page. I’d like the videos because I wanted to support them but when it became literally ALL the videos on my for you page, it got way too depressing and I had to stop liking. Essentially ignoring people who needed help and liking the “fun” videos instead. It’s so evil how platforms like this prey on your empathy either intentionally or unintentionally and then expect you to stay on the app and just get desensitized to scary, depressing, and rage inducing things. Also with fear mongering content. Your paranoia fills their pockets. It’s so dangerous.

The nice thing is that you can cultivate your content. When you see ragebait, or even non-ragebait that just makes you angry, just scroll on. Don't engage in any way. It won't take long before the algorithm goes 'Oh, they don't like this' and stops showing it to you.
