EPISODE THIRTY
Welcome to “Safe on Deck”. My name is Antonio Gemma More'. In the fleet I flew the MH-53E “Sea Dragon” helicopter, and these days I instruct the next generation of Naval Flight Officers in the T-6A “Texan II”. Throughout my incredibly short time in aviation I have been fortunate to meet a wide cross-section of aviators. Along the way I have done my best to document each and every flying memory, but eventually I came to realize that even the sharpest photo or the highest-quality video can only really capture so much.. Everyone I have met has a unique story to tell, and “Safe on Deck” is my humble attempt to capture as many of those exciting and inspiring aviation stories as possible.
For episode thirty I sat down with CDR Matthew Nardi in Lakeland, Florida. CDR Nardi earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science from Cornell University in 2003 before enlisting in the United States Air Force as an aerospace electrical technician. CDR Nardi deployed around the world working on A-10 “Thunderbolt II” and C-130 “Hercules” aircraft. In 2008, CDR Nardi earned his commission in the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Commissioned Officer Corps and he sailed aboard NOAA Ship “Rainer” and NOAA Ship “Fairweather” before joining Navigation Response Team 5 in New York City, New York. In 2012, CDR Nardi earned a coveted spot in NOAA Aircraft Operations where he qualified as Aircraft Commander and Instructor Pilot in the DeHavilland “Twin Otter”, Beechcraft “King Air”, and Gulfstream IV-SP. CDR Nardi currently serves as Chief of Safety, Standardization, and Training Branch at the NOAA Aircraft Operations Center (AOC) headquartered at the Lakeland Linder Regional Airport in Lakeland, Florida. NOAA’s fleet of 10 manned aircraft significantly enhance scientists understanding of hurricanes, improve the accuracy of tropical cyclone forecasts, and play a vital role in monitoring our environment through marine mammal population studies, shoreline change assessments, water resource and snow surveys, air chemistry studies, remote sensing projects, and emergency response missions.
Thank you for taking the time to listen. In the future, I plan to continue to share similar interviews with both current and retired military aviators. If you have a question or a suggestion for a future interview please leave it as a comment below. “Safe on Deck” episode thirty, with CDR Matthew Nardi. Enjoy!
