EPISODE FORTY-ONE
Welcome to “Safe on Deck”. My name is Antonio Gemma More'. In the fleet I flew the MH-53E “Sea Dragon” helicopter, and these days I instruct the next generation of Naval Flight Officers in the T-6A “Texan II”. Throughout my incredibly short time in aviation, I have been fortunate to meet a wide cross-section of aviators. Along the way I have done my best to document each and every flying memory, but eventually I came to realize that even the sharpest photo or the highest-quality video can only really capture so much. Everyone I have met has a unique story to tell, and “Safe on Deck” is my humble attempt to capture as many of those exciting and inspiring aviation stories as possible.
For episode forty-one I sat down with LCDR Michael “COUGAR” Weipert in Pensacola Florida. LCDR Weipert began his career in the military by enlisting in the Utah Army National Guard and after 9/11 he changed his college major to Russian Area Studies/ Russian Literature in order to commission a semester early. After graduating as the top aviator in his class in Army flight training, LCDR Weipert was hand-picked to fly the RC-12 “Guardrail” intelligence-gathering aircraft. Between 2007 and 2012, LCDR Weipert deployed to Iraq for a combined 32 months where he served as a UAV Platoon Leader, UAV Company XO, RC-12 Flight Company Commander, Battalion S-4, Battalion Training Officer, and Task Force Commander. In 2014, LCDR Weipert transitioned into the Navy and attended the Texas A&M School of Medicine, where he was selected as a 2015 Tillman Foundation Scholarship recipient. Upon graduation, LCDR Weipert attended internship as a transitional year intern at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, training at the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute (NAMI), before being assigned to Training Squadron TEN (VT-10) as a Flight Surgeon. LCDR Weipert was chosen for a coveted spot in the Residency in Aviation Medicine (RAM) program where he currently works as an aerospace medicine specialist in the NAMI waiver department. LCDR Weipert is designated as a US Navy Flight Surgeon, a Board eligible Aerospace Medicine physician and an Army Senior Aviator and he has logged over 1500 hours in twelve different aircraft types including the C-12 and the RC-12 M, N, Q, and X model aircraft.
Thank you for taking the time to listen. In the future, I plan to continue to share similar interviews with both current and retired military aviators. If you have a question or a suggestion for a future interview, please leave it as a comment below. “Safe on Deck” episode forty-one, with LCDR Michael “COUGAR” Weipert. Enjoy!
