@@Helldiver_1 Long story short: the Deep State DID exist, we destroyed it, and the world collapsed because of it. Most of the Western US jumped ship to strike out on their own, while the rest eventually reunited under the NUSA. Needless to say, they wanted the rest of the states back, so they tried to reconquer them. However the “Free States” as they called themselves received support from the Japanese megacorporation Arasaka. In return, the NUSA contracted Militech Manufacturing, a military megacorporation that had helped them reestablish themselves, kicking off a massive corporate proxy war. The NUSA _technically_ won, forcing the Free States to enter a military and economic union with them, but most retained their independence, though some like Night City and South California want to fully reunite. Meanwhile, Militech and Arasaka fought _three more wars_ with each other, with both becoming more and more integrated with their home countries (the CEO of Arasaka is also the Emperor of Japan, while the former CEO of Militech is now the President of the NUSA.). Also cyborgs, lots of cyborgs.
