The R.O.C. government in present day is much more better as they democratized. But you know...the CCP would never democratize as most of their citizens are live in a phantom of what CCP want them to see, they will never awake untill they realize the truth of what happened in their country like 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre.

When the Kuomintang conquered Taiwan after WWII, some of these Taiwanese soldiers were killed as Japanese soldiers. 50 years or so seems adequate for accomplishing a generational cultural shift as it was demonstrated in Taiwan. It's thus *important* that the CCP observe its treaty with the U. K. regarding Hong Kong's autonomy for 50 years after its handover. Please note that during British rule HK was a colony. What does “colony” mean? It means that HK people are not given equal rights as U.K. mainland people. U.K. treated HK people as inferior citizens. Why you want British to colonise HK again? You want go on to be exploited?

There will be a free and democratic China , about 2-3 generations from now, of which Hong Kong will be a city. The flag, march of the volunteers, goosestepping will be same but under freedom and democracy. National democracy, as in Korea.

that's what people don't understand. hong kong is never just a chinese city belonging to the han chinese. since the british colonial days, we have been a cosmopolitan city for trading and business, different groups from the empire and all over the world lived in hk and some had settled and established roots, been around for even longer than some of nowadays hong kongers like me (i myself am third gen hong konger with canto ancestry from both paternal and maternal lineage,so basically in hk after ww1) and this is what shaped this city the most. our history and identity mostly started the day the british came even tho we have a strong southern chinese culture

Sad thing is Hong Kong will never survive as an independent City State. It's service based economy will collapse if it loses the special relationship it has to Mainland China and the unique access it has to China's financial markets, something that exists only and only thanks to it's status as a Special Administrative Region. And about food, it's something the British Administration struggled with all throughout the erstwhile colony's existence, which means that a majority of food and grain supply, even to this day is imported in from the mainland, through Shenzhen. Singapore survives because it has a friendly relationship with Malaysia, resulting in easy access of cheap manpower and ample food supply and it's location in the meeting point of South East Asia and Oceania ensures that it remains important, regardless of the political or economic shifts of it's neighbours, the same does not apply to Hong Kong. Hong Kong's stock exchange and Hang Seng Index are dependent purely upon Mainland markets. The second Hong Kong would go independent, an assumingly hostile PRC wouldn't hesitate to see the island's population starve and strangle all necessary infrastructure and supply trade to and from the island, to try force it back into submission. It's just not possible.

Actually, it's quite the contrary in my opinion. The British honoured their lease agreement with the PRC and returned the territory when it expired. There is nothing dishonourable about that, although I personally would have preferred it remained a British colony.
