Watching you take your first shot Reminded me of a friend that took a shot. At a peasant and his gun fell into 3 pieces forend. In one hand stock and receiver in the other barrel fell to the ground that gun had a lot of wiggle room. He commented, I guess it's time for a new gun. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for watching & your comment . I figured the shotgun would have some kick to it & I was holding on to it to tight . With me holding down on it and the upward recoil , well as you saw it came apart & it surprised me

Have shot it since you restored the shotgun ? My dad has this one and he was calling it a “ Long Tom” , on the shotgun it says Texas Ranger , a couple of viewers have said this is an Iver Johnson and there is some slight differences between them , thanks for watching and your comment

These came with chamber lengths of 2-1/2" and 2-3/4" so that should be checked by a gunsmith if you aren't comfortable doing it yourself. A 2-3/4" shotshell in a 2-1/2" chamber would be hazardous.The same can be said of the barrel as I've read they came with several different types of steel. Another good reason for a trip to the gunsmith. The top of the receiver has a deep groove in it. If in sighting it the bead is at the bottom the groove the gun will shoot very low.

@@michaelwillis5040 yes , always check to know what you have and what you can shoot . I have an older one that has a barrel made from Damascus steel which I won’t shoot

Being from that time period, these originally used full brass shells with black powder loads. I just restored a J Stevens Model 89, finally patented in 1917 (what your shotgun is a model of). Be careful with modern shells and stick to light loads.

Thank you for watching & your comment . I hope with your restoration that you are pleased with the end result . Yes , it is always best to use light loads on the older shotguns . Again thanks

A serious video about a cool piece of firearm history and then 3:22 that made me laugh

Thanks for watching the video . I thought about editing that part out , decided not to , things happen . I knew it would have some kick to it , so I was holding it tightly with some downward pressure and basically I pulled the fore end of to dissemble it

Before shooting a rifle that old I would definitely make sure that it gets a good cleaning first
@milsurprifleguy7091
@milsurprifleguy7091 Год назад
Yes , it has some older oil in it for lubricant that could have cleaned off . The shotgun is fairly simple and did not affect the shooting of it . I do always make sure that things function properly before I shot them . For this it is part of the story since it was my grandfathers shotgun , if how ever been a rifle I would have done some cleaning on it . Thank you for watching the video and your comment .

Hello, I'm working on a project about single barrel break action shotguns and you have the only video on the Texas Ranger that I've found to be high quality. Would it be okay if I used snippets of your video in my project?

Good deal. It was just a suggestion. You should always thoroughly clean an old gun before you shoot it. I'll clean my 12 gauge about twice a year whether it needs it or not.

@milsurprifleguy7091 yeah still gets used with bird shot mainly. Was actually passed down to me from my boss. it was his dads and granddads. Also gave me a 1942 lithgow (australian made) Lee enfield 303 aswell. I'm in Australia so good to have what made here also

Is yours the same as the one in the video or is the stock different ? I can look at mine , but my sister has it right now . I will Possibly see her mid August or so .

@milsurprifleguy7091 Год назад
I had the chance to check the one in my video , I took out the two butt plate screws and removed the butt plate . There should be a hole in the stock , if you look in it with a flashlight you will see a large flat head screw that you can tighten using a long screwdriver to reach it . Hope that helps you

No, Ivor Johnston had nothing to do with it. It was made by J. Stevens (spelled with a "v" not a ph). They actually invented the .22 long rifle cartridge.
