This program tells the story of the SS Howard S. Hanna Jr. and the other ships from the same fleet during the Great Storm of 1913. All but one was lost in this storm, which was the deadliest natural disaster in Great Lakes history. This storm led to the sinking of 19 ships and the loss of more than 250 men. Winds exceeding hurricane force occurred over four of the Great Lakes during the storm.
Robert McGreevy, former Grosse Pointer and noted marine artist and author, presents this program as we approach the 110th anniversary of this rare meteorological condition. Learn more about McGreevy, as well as browse his art and books for purchase, at his website: www.mcgreevy.com/.
About the Bicknell Lecture Series:
In 1987, Dr. Frank Bicknell, a long time Grosse Pointe resident and well-known Detroit Medical Center urologist, celebrated his 80th birthday. His daughter and son-in-law established the Grosse Pointe Historical Society's Bicknell Fund to mark his milestone birthday. This fund established the Dr. Frank Bicknell Lecture Series; all Bicknell Lectures are free of charge and open to everyone.
