The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus, as read by the clients and employees of the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization (IRCO) in Portland, Oregon. www.irco.org
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

The ideals expressed in this poem is what makes America great.

Yes, it's a terrible shame that America has been going against these ideals.

This poem hits like a gut punch. If we were living up to these ideals it would not hit as hard as it does. Here’s to a day when this poem does not hit so hard. ❤

@@wormer104agreed. The measure of a nations greatness is how it treats its minorities, poor and disenfranchised.

Stand with all americans even the ones who want to be here but arent a citizen. Theyre not here to hurt you theyre not here to spread fear. Were america. Were welcoming even when the bad bunch are taken over some of us still know what it is to be american. I hope we continue to encourage great people of all nations to want to be here and achieve the american dream

"The copper queen of the city harbor has broken shackles at her feet." That is a line from a poem I wrote, and I figured July IV would be the perfect date to mention it.

Thank you for posting this video. Tonight I'm using it in the English class I teach here in San Diego. Our students come from Brazil, Chile, Dubai, China, Ecuador, and Russia. I expect that we'll have a spirited discussion about the poem and America's immigrant tradition.

lowkey it hasnt really changed that much. Benjamin Franklin raged about Germans coming and replacing white people (He didn't consider Germans to be white people). The only thing that's really changed in 200+ years, is who gets to be part of the in-group and who is still the outsiders.

You're right, it isn't. But were the United States not founded on the idea that the oppressed could come here in search of something better? Also, our national motto, E pluribus unum, reflects the notion that this was to be a place where peoples from all over the world could come together to form a new identity - it's why we've come to be called a melting pot. What we as a nation have done to native peoples is something for another discussion, but the open-arms legacy of Lady Liberty - exemplified by this powerful bit of poetry - is a point of pride for me, because immigrants from all corners of the globe have made this country what it is in so many ways - and I would be willing to bet that your ancestors, like mine, benefitted from it.
@TheGuerillapatriot
@TheGuerillapatriot 5 лет назад
@@pjkaiser27 no, the U.S. was founded by colonists that rebelled against the crown. The 13 colonies united are the origin of the motto. The founders did not consider the U.S. a melting pot. Each state was it's nation and they founded the nation with the idea of leaving it for their posterity. Immigration has been curtailed, some racial groups banned from migrating here. The country was forged by pioneers. Not all cultures are equal and some and not all migrants should be welcome. No, I am not a white man fyi.
