“To find the balance between hope and reality is very, very important.”
Jewish Holocaust survivor, Kurt Messerschmidt, was born in Werneuchen, Germany in 1915. In his USC Shoah Foundation testimony, Kurt discusses hope, faith, peace, and music - and the role they played in his will to survive.
Kurt’s testimony has been integrated into many of USC Shoah Foundation’s educational programs, particularly his detailed account of the Kristallnacht Pogrom; an organized pogrom against Jews in Germany and Austria that occurred on November 9-10, 1938.

A true history of never losing faith and hope. I hope his story helps mine and other generations after me to not forget. Most importantly, to not ever let it happen again. I had the urge to edit this after completing the testimony. First of all, I want to mention the excellent interviewer, allowing time for Mr. Messerschmidt'Story. And for being authentically moved to tears like many listeners in the past and future. Then I admire Kurt Messerschmidt's pure will to survive and his nurturing care for others. Lastly I love the energy Mr. And Mrs. Messerschmidt give in the end. Also, a fantastic, moving voice. Danke Herr Messerschmidt für ihre Lebensgeschichte.

This gentleman’s story is amazing! He was 18 in 1933, so presents a different viewpoint to many I heard before.

An incredible story teller, with a will to survive and the ability to face life in the harshest of conditions and never give up. Kurt Messerschmidt is a true hero who did what he could to help others. He lived thru history in the making and he knew it. His testimony is a powerful reminder of the inhumanity people are capable of, and a warning to us all to never forget.
