Ken Kal sits down with new Executive Vice President and General Manager, Steve Yzerman, and new Senior Vice President, Ken Holland in a Red Wings TV exclusive.
I met Steve at a Norfolk Admirals game in 2011, when he was the GM for Tampa Bay. I was in third grade at the time, and growing up a Red Wings fan, I may have been the happiest kid on the planet. But what really stood out to me, was that when I spoke with him, he seemed to be genuinely interested in what I was talking about. As a kid, it really meant a lot to me. He’s easily one of the most down-to-Earth people I’ve ever met, and that’s always stuck with me ever since. Now that he’s back with Detroit makes me happier than words can describe. Welcome home, Steve.
Think about the years he played, when Detroit we're cellar dwellers,he stayed,he played his guts out when he could have flown the coop.Steve yzerman is a class act,he's everything that's good in hockey,he belongs in Detroit, welcome back sir. Go wings go!!!!
Hope so. Most excited I’ve been about the wings since 2013 when we were up 3-1 against the hawks and I thought we were cup bound.. hopefully we will be again soon
@@rathbone4561 I always find it hilarious when people criticize other people for their spelling or grammar, and their comment is riddle with horrible grammar. You come off as an uneducated dick.
I remember meeting Steve in the summer of 1992 and I asked him if he was gonna score 50 that year...his response was “I’d like to but how bout the cup eh.” He was my favorite player ever of all time....I was only 16 when I met him that day and I’ll never forget it....he’s truly all about the W.
He was merely a rental in Tampa lol I never doubted for a second he was coming back just honesty was happily surprised it was so soon .I figured at least 2 more years . I grew up a wings die heard and the glory days were awesome but I didn't quite understand the development of those teams . It's so exciting to get to watch and understand better the team get built . I have full confidence that the Captain will build us a sick team . Go WINGS ..WELCOM HOME STEVIE
Nashville fan here. Growing up, watching Detroit in the Cup Final almost every year, it was truly an honor seeing Steve, and that unbelievable Red Wings team come to Nashville to play multiple times a year. My parents lived in Detroit for a while, so it was always bittersweet seeing two teams I loved beating each other up each time they played. Long story short, seeing Steve Yzerman enter the Detroit organization once again, definitely brings back some good memories. I really look forward to seeing him take this team back to its championship mindset. Maybe we’ll see a Detroit-Nashville Cup Final in the coming years!
Respect to Kenny Holland. The guy took a LOT of heat from fair-weather "fans", but he took it on the chin and had a solid tenure as GM. The guy's a great manager. The Captain coming home wouldn't have happened without him. Thanks Ken.
Thank you for so many good years and memories Kenny!! You’re a legend!! Stevie you were drafted about the time I was born, no matter what the future brings thank you for your hard work and dedication and not taking your blessings for granted!!!
Hey Stevie, so glad you're back home!! This man is a legend. And even more important he's just such a decent, good guy. But hey, I'm totally biased when it comes to "The Captain". The fact that he's so talented (and so dayum good lookin'!!!) makes me a fan for life!! Love, love, love our Stevie!!!!!.
I’m a Devils fan but I enjoyed his game and enthusiasm throughout the years. Seems like a cool dude to have dinner with and talk Hockey for hours. Good Luck getting better, Detroit!
Born and raised Leafs fan here... Both parents born in Windsor. Just wanted to say, I am glad Stevie Y is back at home. You guys need him now, more than ever! That city needs a resurgence, it needs something to cheer for!!! I remember the Red Wings being the most dominant team I have ever seen when I was younger... It was no question that with Sergei and Steve, they had the best line 1 & line 2 center combo in the league. Why? Because they were both leaders and could play 2-way hockey. I hated (only because I wanted my Leafs to play like it) and respected what they could do on the ice. I never liked that Steve was in Tampa, I always thought he should have been given the job in Detroit way, WAY sooner. Good luck Steve, good luck Red Wings.
Steve Yzerman is the world's biggest hockey icon. For him, my favorite number 19 and Red Wings are the most popular team in the world. Even more than a national team. I'm glad she's at Red Wings.
I really want to see the Wings get back to prominence in the NHL and with Stevie at the helm for the organization that made him a hockey legend it’s a good trend upward for them.
I’m glad he said he wants fast, skilled, competitive players as opposed to holland saying he wanted guys “big and tough to play against” cause that’s the direction the league is headed. I mean aho is out there laying the wood on guys, that’s why the canes are up 3-0 in the ECSF.
this is the all around greatest hockey player and human ive ever watched during my life. Look out for detroit next year this guy doesnt have to be on the ice to impact a team
I am happy for Stevie. He put us in a great spot, and it sucks we couldn't win the cup before he left. I am sure he will be working his cap magic for Detroit. Can't wait to see how the media will explain that with the ol' Florida has no income tax BS.
Love that Hank was front and center. He's not Stevie, obviously, but I've always loved him. Awesome that Stevie is back, and I think RW are heading in the right direction.
I feel like I got my first hug from both my parents after I thought they forgot me at cedar point. Steve. U are ment to be here detroit needs u. U are the eminem to hockey
Steve Yzerman is going to turn this city back into hockeytown 🏒 and will make them make the playoffs next year! His presence and action is going to lift the players up!
It feels good. Larkin feels like the captain, no doubt. He looks like a face that is destined to raise a cup. Give him a couple years and Zadina should be ready to be a great piece alongside Athanasiou. And based on how good Yzerman made the Lightning, this guy can build a fucking team. Let's go wings!!!🐙
This guy is probably the 12th best hockey player ever, and to top it off, probably also the 20th best GM ever -- but he walks around with the modesty of an intern. Meanwhile, we got guys like John Tortorella who walks around like he invented water.
80teg player stats would agree but there is something about his leadership skills that make him contend as one of the best captains of all time. The way he commanded respect from his guys on the ice sets him apart from the other stat leaders. This role will further his legacy as a leader. I’m excited as a Wings fan and it’s nice to have a beacon of light in Detroit sports again.
As a Habs fan, im happy for Detroit and its good that they realize they need to rebuild with the right guy. Compared to Montreal we are keeping a braindead GM and are afraid to rebuild. Go Wings Go!
@@coyote5.02 www.rawcharge.com/2017/3/16/14938044/tampa-bay-lightning-steve-yzerman-understanding-the-yzerplan-the-draft-al-murray-scouting-bolts The man behind the drafting strategy in Tampa is Director of Amateur Scouting Al Murray. When Yzerman was hired to be the Lightning’s General Manager in 2010, he recruited Murray away from his position as head scout for Hockey Canada, where he had won a pair of IIHF World Junior Championship gold medals (2008, 2009) and one IIHF World Under-18 Championship gold medal (2008). Al Murray has been at the helm of Tampa’s amateur scouting department since the 2011 NHL Draft. 42 of the 46 players drafted by Murray are still with the organization (three were traded away and one went unsigned). If you include the three undrafted free agent signings, Murray has brought in a total of 49 players and the Bolts have kept 46 of them. That 94% retention rate speaks to the idea that Yzerman trusts Murray’s selections to develop into valuable players. That trust combined with patience has put the team in a position to succeed both now and well into the future.
I think Tyler Wright the current head of amateur scouting for the Wings is a good one but Yzerman might want his own man. That is if he can pry him away.
Good scouting seems to be a 4-step process: 1- Have good scouts 2- Have enough of them 3- Give them what they want and need 4- Listen to them in the meetings There are enough good scouts out there; problem is a lot of suits make the "final call" and go against the guy whose put in more work, because they don't trust that they have hired the right scouts/personnel. Its also a common thread among teams with bad ownership: The GM goes against the scouts because of whatever reason, because the GM is insecure about his job; he considers every decision a possible reason to lose his job...... that won't happen with Yzerman in Detroit. There's also the opposite, where guys realize after 10 years of sheer incompetence, they will never get fired. I'm from Edmonton.... we're thinking of changing our name to the Edmonton Ol'boys Club.
2:32-3:07 Pav is on a plane right now to Detroit for a meeting with his agent. If a call to Chayka hasn't happened yet, I'd be surprised. I think Pav may actually be coming home. He doesn't want to pull a Dubas and develop too fast. If you do that, you gotta pay the kids after 3 years. It's putting your eggs in one basket.
Oh yeah, he has just said today that he leaving SKA.. I was excited when Pavel came back to Russia, but then it felt like smth was wrong with that and lots of russian fans now would love to see him in his maybe last season in Motor city! Of course there is another option in his hometown Ekaterinburg and they want him so much, 'cause they whould have a chance to win the Gagarin Cup next year
Although I agree, maybe stepping out from under the Illitch family on his own makes him a better GM than if he had stayed. At least that is what I am hoping.
No hate but he can make a team like the lighting and do well and destroy the regular season but won’t do well in playoffs but start a new playoff streak would be good
