His delivery of "Mum's had a lot going on" is so very good. It's the perfect tone for conveying the mix of defensiveness and heartbreak that children in his position feel.
I'm glad it was Michelle who ran after him, as his cousin and the person in the group who knows him best. lesser writers would likely have chosen Erin, who the show occasionally subtly hints might eventually have a thing with James, for this moment, but this is about Michelle and James, and the moment of family becoming friends
Omg yesss that's what I notice too! Well put! I'm glad they made Michelle chase after him and Orla was the one who jump-hugged him! It's nice to have series just about pure friendships.... So underrated
Also because Michelle is the one making fun of James the most. She always says how she wishes he wasn't here and makes fun of his accent and calls him names. But she's the one that begs him to stay.
There is something so comforting about this show? I just feel warm and fuzzy when I watch it. The characters just radiate familiarity to me. They’re like good old friends in a way
I think it's because to a certain degree its realistic. Whenever things like this happen around us, we dont change every single day of our lives. We still joke, laugh, tease, and so much more like they do on this show. So it feels like coming home after a long day
@@Rosibrosibuns this. So many other shows are absolutely unrealistic and act as if life is perfect and everyone is rich. This show is great in the sense that it’s so realistic.
I feel the same way I didn't know how to describe it but you just did. Even though the characters are exaggerated for comedy they feel like people I know. Great writing and casting.
I found it very emotional to watch but I really liked the fact the girls were upset about James leaving and you could see that their attitude towards him had totally changed and that they cared about Him and wanted him to stay that's what I liked about Michelle because she knew what his mum was like and she didn't want him to get hurt again so she does her best to persuade him to stay, when he does leave you can that it's really upset Michelle
Aww, I love how Michelle shows her true feelings about James in this scene. She's spent the last two seasons unapologetically teasing him and loudly condemning him for all to hear, but you can tell that underneath all of her bravado and tough love, she's come to respect James in her own way. It's what makes the final scene in the episode so touching and emotional. 😥"I am a Derry Girl"!🙌❤
Caitriona Quigley don’t you actually think that our way. Taking the mickey out of the people we care most about. Greeting loved ones with a swear word or two. We’re a strange breed.
@@bobbieeeee Yes, there were some years in the early 70s where there were 400-500 deaths in NI, you may be stretching comedy to its breaking point if you went back to that period.
I second that opinion, James Maguire is the most charming, dorky guy to ever grace British Television. Here's hoping that we get more scenes of him and Erin together!😍
So much in this scene that was marvellous . What was touching was James's desperation to just have a mum like everyone else, someone who would adore him and want him, and his willingness to believe that she really just wanted him back. When the penny did drop he was right to return to the people who did adore him and want him. You always feel he adores Erin's mother because she is everything he would want a mother to be. He always has a nice word for her, complimenting her hat at the wedding, and note how she responded to him... "thanks son", and it was James that ma Mary turned to when Erin was left jilted on the night of the prom. So many signs that James is part of that family. Michelle's speech to James was the best of the series, the very person who has called him a dick a thousand times confirming to him that he is one of them and she wants him to stay. The writing and acting are second to none in this show. Can't wait for series three.
Totally in agreement with this! James is almost always subjected to "Tough Love" while in Derry, but everyone cares for him in their own way. This is in stark contrast to Cathy, who abandons him in Derry and then returns for him without a word. I loved how James realized that Derry was where he truly belonged, with people who ACTUALLY care about him. They're not going to be losing their "Wee English Fella" anytime soon, and neither are we!😃🍀
Yes, I only caught that reference the second time I watched this episode. Before, Orla was referring to not understanding James' British accent, but now she's talking about not understanding why he has to leave Derry.😥
I just noticed when Michelle goes after James, Orla waves her on. It’s crazy how much stuff you miss if you aren’t paying attention to Orla every time she’s in the background.
The very final scene of this episode, when James comes back and the girls leave their front-row spots to engulf him in a group hug, had me SOBBING. James's "found family" embracing him, physically and emotionally, with Clinton's hopeful speech being spoken in the background, absolutely wrecked me.
@@loributterflying It shows Michelle's ignorance of basic Geography. She got Sweden mixed up with Switzerland, as Stockholm is the capital of Sweden, not Switzerland! 🇨🇭🇸🇪😂
The heartbreak in Ma Mary's eyes when James says "Mum's had a lot going on". Ah that woman can be strict but she definitely cares for all of the Derry Girls. This show has the best writers and directors. Scratch that, this show has an extraordinary production team.
You can see the surprise in Mary's face when James defends his mum "mums had alot going on" you can see her surprise and she seems slightly disappointed at the same time
I really ended up liking James at the end of the season. Honestly, I was devastated when he said he was leaving. But, he’s a Derry girl, and here to stay
Love all the subtle moments in this show like the James and Erin romance hints. But one I love is when Mary is being sarcastic to everything Cathy says but when James said mums had a lot going on you see this switch in her eyes for a second as she feels bad for James a boy she clearly cares about. It’s a sweet subtle moment showing just how caring Mary is and the bond between her and James 💖
That's really sweet!😍 You can tell that Mary considers James to be like the son she never had, as shown in the wedding episode where he compliments her hat. Plus, he might end up becoming her future son in law someday!😉
I would hate an Erin/James’ romance, she was never nice to him and I can’t see any chemistry, James and Orla are the shit but probably gonna go for the cliche
@@marykollmn1116 i agree, James and Orla would be less predictable than Erin and James, without being completely out of the blue, like season 2 honestly set up a really nice opportunity to make them a couple (as well as the hug when they're dancing at the end of season 1)
1:22 this is the scene that made me honor Dylan's (James) acting skills. The way his face shows emotions like admiration towards his mom is briliant and the scene after that makes my movie critic heart skip a beat.
Just to let you know, there's quite a difference between Ireland and Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland is mainly (keep in mind mainly, not all) Protestants and Ireland is mainly Catholics.
I think my favorite part about this episode is how protective everyone is over James. They spend the whole show teasing him but when his mom comes back they’re all looking out for him :’)
I heard wank features the first time ever on this show and have never heard it used since. I googled it and nothing came up so I assumed that she said "wine features" describing is mother's pitch about stickers. Damn I am glad I am not the only one who heard wank features.
I love how deeply Michelle loves him no matter how badly she treats him. She's not telling him his mum will let him down again to hurt him, but because she cares. They all do. It's such a lovely scene.
I found that a very emotional scene to watch, I cried x I loved hearing Michelle saying that to James, she really surprised me x you saw a totally different side to Michelle and she shown her true feelings towards James, she may bully him a lot but she knew his mum very well and didnt want him to go through what he has in the past and for him to get hurt again, she knew he'd be let down again x
I find much deeper meaning of James being told he's a Derry Girl and he's 'one of us'. The part not shown(spoiler) is when he's in the taxi on his way back to London his mom talks down about Derry. Of course James comes back in the end and reunites with the girls. To me what this is showing is that James who is English is a young person who is taking the high road, embracing new ideas and choosing to come together instead of still live the same way as it always has been. The end of this episode shows that they can coexist. It was a great thing to see.
I wish they would of shown the scene of James telling his mum that he wants to stay, I would ofbeen very interested in seeing her reaction. Do you think we'll see her again ?
The last minute of this episode is filmed so beautifully, and has so many things coming together at the same time, that it hits me every time. In order to hit those moments without coming off wrong is incredibly hard. Kudos to the director, actors, and especially Lisa for this amazing script.
I absolutely loved hearing Michelle saying that to James x I found that scene well emotional x it made my cry x showed deep down just how much she cared about her cousin, she knew what his mum was like, she didnt want James to get hurt
Love that its Michelle who's like "hell no, he cant leave," you show someone you care by relentlessly teasing them. That's what I do with family and friends haha
Sobre la sensibilidad de Michelle, hay un antecedente en la última escena en s1 e6. Cuando suben al escenario para acompañar a Orla, Michelle hace un gesto de resignación como diciendo "here we go again"
I'm really surprised by all the people who ship erin and james. Orla and James have so much chemistry! The way they hugged, how she was the first one to spot him, just they way they look at each other has that spark.
This was not only one of the best eps of Derry Girls, it was one of the best eps of any series ever. Funny, sad, happy, cruel and silly--just like life.
These guys are wonderful!!! I loved when Michelle told James "Well, I don't want you to!" when he was going away.... fkn in the feels for real!!! Love these girls!!!!
I found it a very emotional episode to watch, I absolutely love the programme, I certainly found tears in my eyes. I loved the fact the girls wanted him to stay especially Michelle
I freaking cried my eyes out at this ending. The way they all just hugged and walked past the TV, ignoring the Presidential ceremony they'd been looking forward to, because their favourite English prick decided to stay 😭❤️ James deserves all the love
It's such a beautiful scene, because after so much shit-talking her cousin, Michelle finally directly admits to James (in her own way), that she really cares about him and sees him as real family, even a friend. Had she not chased him down like this to say that, James wouldn't have fully registered just how much leaving would have hurt them and left anyways. It HAD to be Michelle, too. She rejected him the hardest of everyone, and she was his cousin. If she didn't accept him, he wouldn't have believed he was accepted from anyone else.
That Michelle and James bit at the end was A+ acting and writing. I loved the slight differences in Michelle's words. Still cutting and brash, but now it's welcoming and hopeful.
I love the way you finally see that the girls have shown that they see James as a true friend and do not want him to leave. Michelle shows a lot of care for James and trys to persuade him to stay as she knows what his mum is like "she'll let you down again, you do realise that" I found it a very emotional scene to watch but I think it was done very well x
Can I just say that Baby Anna’s expressions throughout the two series have been perfection. Imagine being the baby unit director and just filming for hours on end catching these little gems, like the head tilt at 0:41
Yes, at around 3:40, when she asks "When"? I'm hoping that we get more of Team Erin/James in the next series. I've been shipping them together ever since Season 1!😉💘
Think they are saving the Erin/James romance for series 3. Lisa has indicated that there is chemistry there and she is going to explore it in the scrips for the next series.
As much as I’d love to see them get together, she made it clear in season 1 that she thought Katya was insane for fancying James, I hope she didn’t mean it 🤞
When they link arms at the cordon, Erin keeps looking at James and quickly looking past him before linking arms with Michelle; she was hoping he’d take her arm 😍
@@orian2355 I hope they hold of a bit longer perhaps season 4/5 (fingers crossed we get there) because i love their current friendship dynamic and their sooo young but deffo in the future. Im already dying at grampa Joes probable reaction he's so mean to Gerry for being a southernor could you imagine. But if we do get that relationship i do hope they hold off and give hints then rush in.
I thought it was hilarious when James returned and yelled 'I'm a Derry Girl' followed by the guy in the crowd's response :-) The thought of him leaving did bring tears to my eyes.
Erin's response of "when?" at 3:40 is so heavy! I didn't notice it on my first couple re-watches, but once I did, every subsequent re-watch, it's been front and center.
Ok but James’ haircut is so much better this season, it really makes a diff. Last series he was cute but that hair cut was just....ehhh. This series I was WOAH HES HOT.
This made me so heartbroken! It was so sad seeing all their faces and having Michelle confront him. They love each other so much in their weird teenage way.
Did you catch the toddler's expression in the first scene? Perfect. She's taking it all in, and even tho she's not talking yet you can tell she's got plenty to say.
Found this series on Netflix, right before our second trip to see friends in Ireland. Was not expecting to like it as much as I did. This scene is one of the reasons why this show has quickly grown on me.
Every time I watch this I always have grit in my eyes. The acting is nothing short of brilliant both actor show their emotions to the full, once again brilliant.
I don't blame her, I couldn't stand her, James knew what everyone was saying about his mum was true but he just didnt want to admit it, he wanted to be like any other kid and a good mum who really cared about him, I was very happy when he decided to stay x
This wash such a fantastic program. Comedy writing like this is ironically such a rare thing . A show where one minute your sides are splitting at the foul mouthed comedy situation, and the next there’s a truly heartfelt scene like Michelle telling her cousin that she doesn’t want him to go back to England. Shows like this with such a young cast by their nature can only be very short lived .
YES I LOVE IT! I thought no-one else would make this link, I'm so happy you mentioned it 😂 Catherine Tate should be on this show, lets start a petition 😊
