Line C of the Lyon Metro follows the right of way of an old cable-hauled railway, which originally opened in 1891. The line closed in 1972 for refurbishment and conversion to rack railway technology, reopening for service in 1974 as a rack railway metro line.
The line now serves five stations, and is 2.4 kilometres (1.5 mi) long. It was constructed using various methods: the original route used by the former funicular line runs up a steep incline rising from a deep tunnel to an exposed trench, the newly built level segment at Croix-Rousse using cut-and-cover, and the latest section beyond Hénon running on the surface. Croix Paquet station is the steepest metro station in the world, with an incline of 17%. The repurposed alignment of the original funicular from Croix-Paquet to Croix-Rousse is among the world's oldest structures currently used by metro trains, having first opened in 1891.
Enjoy this look at an incredibly interesting piece of infrastructure!

The Lyon Metro Line C is definitely one of the most unusual metro lines out there. If I remember correctly I read somewhere that it was originally a funicular system, which explains the steepness of the line.

Exactly it open in the 1890’s and between 1972 and 1972 it was closed and completely modernised

It's also the only metro line in France the uses catenary! (no rouen, calling your tram "metro" doesn't make it a metro) but it's soon to be joined by the 3 of the 4 lines under construction around Paris

5:36 I have recently been to London and the Jubilee 1995 stock trains produce a sound that's quite similar. I'm not sure but it may have to do with the inverters of the 1995 stock as well as the MCL 80 trains in Lyon being produced by the same company, Alstom

Since Barcelona's Montjuïc Funicular is fully fare-integrated into the metro network and is arguably a metro line, I wonder if it beats this. But I haven't heard of a rack railway metro line anywhere else. And the funicular's platforms have stair steps, so there isn't a tilted platform like that.

I don't wish to be difficult, but the clear background of the subtitles makes them almost illegible. Could you switch either the font color or the background to black? That would make them so much easier to read. Thank you.

I know those trains have strong Brakes, and don’t let them pull the emergency brakes everyone gonna fly to the front of the train 😂

@ around 3:10 we can hear that the subway on the right has a faster and higher closing door tone than on the left, is there any reason? Unchecked oscillators as in MF67 in Paris perhaps? Si y a des Lyonnais qui ont une petite idée, je serai curieux de savoir.

Did Westinghouse do the propulsion for this train set? It has similar howling motors like the R68/R68As

why is it driving on the left side?
@timelessori
@timelessori Месяц назад
trains historically drive on left side in france, and the plan back when the subway network was planned in lyon, they thought about connecting the subway to existing railway network, alongside regular trains. this didnt happen but lyon is left with the only left-handed subway system in whole of france.
