I was born in Manhattan in 1950. I went to school in the West Village and walked those streets every day. We didn't have any scaffolding or adults sitting on dirty building stoops using laptops. In the Village side streets, we had Bohemian artists (beatniks) running small quaint shops that sold hand made jewelry, candles, incense, and other unique items. We had a bustling 8th street with below street level modern dress and shoe shops, an ice cream parlor with root beer floats and hot fudge sundaes and a diner style coffee shop with juicy, big hamburgers. I left in 1975 for California. I miss the New York City I knew before it became the overcrowded, gentrified and over hyped place it has become.

R Celeste Felix I was born in 1950 across the Hudson River in Union City NJ. When I was a teenager my friends and I would hop on a bus into the city, we would always go to the village. Visited the shops that had great art. Then went by cafes where the jazzy music flowed. It was great fun back then in the late 60’s & early 70’s.

I live in Toronto, but love going to New York as often as I can. I'm 71 and went to NY first at age 13 with my parents and became a New York groupie from then on. But I agree that the city has been gentrified to the hilt, just like Toronto and many other international western hemisphere cities. New York is now for the rich and tourists, but it is still vibrant in a different way. Just not quite as interesting to me now as in the past. Sad.

I was born and raised in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn..Next section not to far, is Brooklyn Heights..The West Village looks exactly like Carroll Gardens, and Brooklyn Heights..But just a different borough parts of New York..Lovely homes and great place to live.
