Google Maps Route: goo.gl/maps/8b...
I walk through the neighborhood of Hunts Point in the Bronx. This is the auto repair and the food distribution center of NYC.
From Wikipedia:
"Hunts Point is a neighborhood located on a peninsula in the South Bronx of New York City. It is the location of one of the largest food distribution facilities in the world, the Hunts Point Cooperative Market. Its boundaries are the Bruckner Expressway to the west and north, the Bronx River to the east, and the East River to the south. Hunts Point Avenue is the primary street through Hunts Point.
The neighborhood is part of Bronx Community District 2, and its ZIP Code is 10474. The neighborhood is served by the New York City Police Department's 41st Precinct. NYCHA property in the area is patrolled by P.S.A. 7 at 737 Melrose Avenue located in the Melrose section of the Bronx."

I lived in the south Bronx in the 70's and 80's. Hunts point back in those days were known as the street walker paradise but I am glad it has changed. those were rough days a lot of abandon buildings around that area. I lived on 163rd street Bryant avenue but walked around Hunts point at times

You don’t know how good is distributed in America. Tractor trailers deliver to the markets from all over America. The food is offloaded and stored and then reloaded into smaller trucks for local delivery. Customers don’t come to the huge markets yo pick up a few salmon fillets. The markets aren’t grocery stores.

Correction, if you make it in RIO DE JANEIRO or SÃO PAULO, you can make it anywhere. Brazil isnt for cute little mice, Brazil is for fucking mad rats lol. Here you dont even walk with your hands in your pockets ou the cellphone in your hands. You would be at risk if you do that here.

I'm a former NYCTA bus driver and I drove the route Bx 6 down there in the 90's. Hunts Point is a HUGE commercial distribution center for supermarkets and department stores. Its not meant for retail, its for the stores to have their trucks pick up their inventory. It is a circular area, one way in and one way out. Buses only run frequently during rush hour down there. After that, its a ghost town, race track and red light special district lol

My old neighborhood growing up way back in the middle to late 50s to the mid 60s. Hunts Point Avenue is where my girlfriend used to live (the building used to be by the corner of Hunts Point and Lafayette Avenue, same side you walked on). I lived on Manida Street. I remember there was a private hospital on the corner of Lafayette and Manida, there was a monastery on Lafayette and the elementary school is the Joseph Rodman Drake School, or PS 48 (second through sixth grades). Thank you for walking by there. Brought back lots of happy memories.

Also, it is great that you are getting the angles of NYC that most tourists who has never stepped outside of Manhattan, let alone the millions of people who wishes to visit NYC to see what all of NYC looks like, how much the various neighborhoods and the boroughs and how much they differ in look and feel to one another! So, a big thank you for that!
@crazeyjoe
@crazeyjoe 5 лет назад
@Joey Esquivel It's great that you venture out as most tourists do not beyond the most famous attractions. I grew up in NYC and live out west now. Yes, what is considered to be the South Bronx is really, the southwestern portion of the Bronx, looked like the aftermath of a war in many areas there. Luckily, those days are long gone. Back in those days, unless you lived in the SB (or visited relatives/close ones), the only reason to go there was to attend a Yankees baseball game or to score some rock candy. Today, there are many reasons to visit SB and the Bronx as a whole as the other boroughs!

I was born and raised in the Bronx (Soundview). The Hunts Point I remember in the 70’s & 80’s was filled with Pimps, Hoes, Heroin the Hunts Point Produce Market, potholes, abandoned houses, hub caps for sale, the largest numbers of people Asthma in NYC and the famous Valencia’s Bakery. To get a feel for the level of prostitution history check out HBO’s “Hookers on the Point” documentary. I’m glad to see it’s improved.

At night it calmed down unless you worked towards the Hunts Point industrial Market. I do miss the Point very much since moving in 2017 to NC. Its been through and going through so much change and I really look forward to seeing where Hunts Point will be in 20 years.

When you're in the Bronx again, I'd suggest you go to the Hall of Fame for Great Americans on the campus of Bronx Community College. I once had a temp job at the HRA office on Garrison Ave, and I walked exactly how you walked at the start of the video. That intersection after getting out of the subway was always so scary with the cars driving in all directions as you crossed under the expressway. I also remember the people walking there were friendly. I got to know some of the food shops and cafes at my lunch break. Thanks for the great video - it brings back memories.
@chiefjoes.wiggumindonutswe5662
I'd be squeamish to walk down that neighborhood, let alone recording those mean streets and I'm a 🍩-Nut Cop. Amazing, AK.
@thegardencollectionboutiqu7349
@chiefJoe is that a bad area or something?
@chiefjoes.wiggumindonutswe5662
@@thegardencollectionboutiqu7349 As AK explained it was a very sketchy (CRACK COCAINE EPIDEMIC) area in the 80s to the 90s, and still has that remnant mean streak attached to it in 2019.

Hey actionkid.. I'm glad to see another video and thanks for the awesome experience. I'm always amazed at how your not afraid of walking through certain areas of NY as a whole alone and at all times of the day and evening. Are there areas of different boroughs that you wouldn't visit? I was told that the bronx was pretty dangerous..with gangs.
@ActionKid
@ActionKid 5 лет назад
New York City as a whole is pretty safe now. The Bronx had a bad reputation of being a dangerous borough through the past decades but it’s not like that anymore.

Wow, I moved away from The Bronx 17yrs ago, and this Hunts Point you just recorded looks nothing like the Hunts Point I remember. To be honest "ActionKid" I do not know who you are, but when you said that you heard Hunts Point had a Red Light district, I knew immediately you were not from The Bronx. Hunts Point is where every kid back in the 70's, 80;s & 90's went to learn sex-ed 101. Hookers used to walk all over those streets, and there were pimps & drugs all over as well. There used to be many intense dangerous drag races at night. That club you pointed out as "Club W" or something, was actually the notorious "Mr. Wedge" club (Younger kids please GOOGLE it) back in the day if I remember correctly. To be honest & not disrespectful, but if you were walking through Hunts Point with your camera like this in the 70's, 80's, & 90's you would have undoubtedly been robbed with the quickness, and more than likely beat up badly. Hunts Point looks like the Taj Majal now compared to the cesspool of filth it was decades ago. Nice video, but oddly I feel sadder than I do happy for this area. although it has made leaps and bounds towards civility, I have a soft spot for the old Hunts Point. Oh well -- that is progress for you. Thank you, for the video...
