This was amazing - I've seen so many blogs really mess this up and only teach 7, 7:15, 7:30, and 7:45 and then tell students that they know everything they need to know about the time. Even the Dutch books to study for NTII - by Boom Uitgeverij ... do a really shytty job with this.

It's very surprising that my language (Indonesian) uses the same way as in Dutch (I think Indonesian adopted it from Dutch). Clock in Indonesia also uses the 24-hour format. 05.00 = Het is vijf uur. Indonesian: Ini jam lima. 05.05 = Het is vijf over vijf. Ind: Ini jam lima lebih lima. 05.15 = Het is kwart over vijf. Ind: Ini jam lima lebih seperempat. 05.20 = Het is tien voor half zes. Ind: Ini jam setengah enam kurang sepuluh. 05.30 = Het is half zes. Ind: Ini jam setengah enam. 05.40 = Het is twintig voor zes. Ind: Ini jam enam kurang dua puluh. OR Ini jam setengah enam lebih sepuluh. 05.45 = Het is kwart voor zes. Ind: Ini jam enam kurang seperempat. Lima = Vijf Enam = Zes Sepuluh = Tien Dua puluh = twintig Jam/pukul = Uur Seperempat = kwart Setengah = half Lebih/lewat = over Kurang = voor

Cool! Ik ga toevallig volgende week een video publiceren waarin ik met een Indonesische docent bespreek welke woorden in het Indonesisch zijn overgenomen uit het Nederlands, maar ook andersom!

@@ngobeem Di sini, "het is" (bahasa Belanda) dan "it is" (bahasa Inggris) hanya merupakan "dummy pronouns" (sebenarnya tidak punya arti, tapi diharuskan oleh aturan tata bahasa/gramatika). Jadi tidak perlu diterjemahkan menjadi "ini" dalam bahasa Indonesia, karena selain tidak natural, malah menjadi tidak sesuai tata bahasa Indonesia. Sebaiknya cukup diterjemahkan: jam/pukul ... . Bisa juga diterjemahkan: Sekarang/saat ini jam .... , karena "het is/it is" dalam "present tense" menunjuk ke waktu saat ini (badingkan dengan "het was/it was ...")

@@EvanC0912 Terima kasih atas masukannya. Ya, betul. Di dalam Bahasa Inggris & Belanda, kata "It is" & "Het is" harus ada (sebagai pelengkap subjek) & memang tak bisa diterjemahkan ke dalam Bahasa Indonesia. Ya, penggunaan kata "Saat ini" atau "Sekarang jam/pukul" dirasa lebih tepat.

Met de half uuren hebben we in Hongarije de hetselfte method. Bijvorbeeld in jouw video was half twalf (11:30) en in het hongaars is fél tizenkettő, maar het rest is anders. Het is nu kwart over vijf. Bedankt jouw video!

In Russische ook: пол-двенадцатого = 11:30 (dus : «пол» het is vermindering van «половина» - «half” ; “двенадцатого» het is vermindering van “двенадцатого часа» dus, het is cijfer in de vorm die overeenkomt met het woord "uur" en zonder het woord "uur". In Oekraïnes is ook: половина дванадцятоï = 11:30 zonder vermindering “half” en cijfer in de vorm die overeenkomt met het woord “uur”, maar zonder word “uur”

In de Indonesische taal zeggen we het zelfde als in het Nederlands. Bijvoorbeeld "setengah (half) dua (twee)" betekent 1.30. Maar je kan ook "satu (een), tiga puluh (dertig)" zeggen.

In Italian is much easier, we just say the hour first and then the minutes..like.. "it's 11.35" is "sono le undici (11) e trentacinque (35)" Easy. Come on life is hard already, we don't wanna make it even harder in basic things like "what time is it" 😅

BTW, earlier in the video you asked how we tell the time in our language. In Italian, for example we say: "mezzogiorno e mezza" (midday and half) or simply "la mezza" (the half) for saying "12:30" If we have to say: "6:15" we say: "sei e un quarto" (literally, six and a quarter) for "7:45" we can say: "sette e quarantacinque" (seven and forty-five), "sette e tre quarti" (seven and three quarters) o "un quarto alle otto" (a quarter to eight). For all the other times, like 11:25 or 10:05, we say "undici e venticinque" (eleven and twenty-five) or "dieci e tre" (ten and five), so we read first the hour and then the minutes. Generally, we also count how minutes are left to the next hour usually from :40 minutes (so we also say "venti alle otto" for example, if it's 7:40) or "dieci alle nove" if it's 8:50.

That's a good question! It's only when a word ends on -en that we do that, but not in all dialects! In the east of the Netherlands, people really emphasize the N!
