府中くらやみ祭りの由来は、昔、神輿渡御が深夜に街の明かりを消した暗闇の中で行われたことに由来しています。尊い神様が人の目に触れないように、御輿を真夜中に担いだためと言われています。また、貴いものを見ることは許されないという古来から存在する儀礼に起因し、神聖な御霊が神社から神輿に移り御旅所に渡御するのは人目に触れることのない暗闇でなければならないという神事の伝統がそのまま現代まで引き継がれているためとも言われています。
府中くらやみ祭りは、東京都府中市の大國魂神社（武蔵国の国府である当地の総社）で行われる例大祭で、武蔵国の「国府祭」を起源としています。毎年4月30日から5月6日まで、数々の古式の神事が行われるとともに、大太鼓・山車（だし）・万灯（まんどう）・子供神輿も登場します。期間中は約70万人の人出で賑わいますとのことです。

The Fuchu-Kurayamatsuri is an annual grand festival held at Okuni Soul Shrine in Fuchu City, Tokyo (the headquarters of Musashi-kuni) and originated from the Musashi-kuni "Kokubu-matsuri."From April 30th to May 6th every year, many ancient Shinto rituals are held, and large drums, floats, Mando, and children's portable shrines also appear.It is said to be crowded with about 700,000 people during the period.
