Powerful and seizing! Sounds like warrior laments... before and after the battle. LOVE it! Comme a dit un ami francophone; frissons assurés! Greetings from Québec, Canada.

I love how loose and free his playing is! It’s like he’s dashing back-and-forth between the realms of music and noise, melody and sound design. When he overblows it’s very very powerful…

The instrument probably has no reed. It is simply called tàké (たけ), bamboo. It is not a musical instrument but an instrument of dharma, whatever that might connote. These are sound benedictions, charmed sutras.

I find it to be a source for wondering the fact that this instrument is made out of a kind of sophisticated reed, if you want to become romantic, picked up in a field. The assessment of its quality subjected only to the pure eye of the artisan, the feeling under his or her hand, carved out of a highly educated instinct, with simple tools, so to speak. It's final money value way away, under and to the side of a gold, paltinum or silver flute. There must be some statement here about true democracy.

Not really, Metal is the ideal material for the pure tone of the western concert flute, while bamboo fits the very different aesthetic of the Japanese flute. Different tools for different kinds of music. Don't forget the modern western concert flute evolved from the simple renaissance flute made of maple or fruit tree wood.

@@robappleby583 To be fair (from my personal experience as a shakuhachi student that used to practice flute as well) , the aesthetics and notions of the players themselves vary so greatly, that i think it reflects on the way of performance and music played (or vice versa, the music itself attracts a specific mindset, perhaps). The shakuhachi is truly the first instrument i have encountered where it does not matter what sort of instrument you use, the quality, etc etc, as long as you focus on your breath and being in the moment. Of course, i'm talking about playing honkyokou , the actual repertoire developed for the shakuhachi. If one was to play jazz or anything more musical on it, then i think it is much more similar to the western flute.
