▶️Skunk2 Ultra Race Intake Manifold Port & Polish "How To"🔧.Here I am porting & polishing a "Skunk2 Ultra Race" Intake Manifold. Sadly they come from the factory with a hefty price tag of $700-$1,200 depending on your optional spacer for the plenum. They also come with a ton of casting flaws such seen in the video.There are multiple ways to port & polish but I find this method the easiest for DIYers.

Let the weight of the filled bottle help doin' half the work for you - and if I'm allowed to suggest something, I propose to dip the front of the bottle in glue and the an abrasive quartz sand or korund, that'll make the job nice and easy.

Nice work, but polishing won't improve anything as the air will "stick" to the surface, causing a laminar flow close to the surface. In fact this will increase the fluid friction in this areas. Other than that, a certain roughness will cause microscopic swirls, acting like rollers to the gas flow inside the ports. This phenomenon is known as the "shark skin effect" But I guess that there won't be any difference to be experienced at all, because the greatest restriction in air- flow will probably be elswhere anyway. (mostly in the valve- seat area) The most important issue with the manifold is the connection between head and ports. This needs to be flush with no edges or sealings protruding into the channels. But anyway: Some good ideas to use the bottle and the honing- tool to remove the rough imperfections! Nice job though.

I was always told NOT to polish inlets!? The fuel can fall out of suspension in a polished port but a coarse port this cannot happen. I always polish exhaust ports to the max! This also includes the combustions chamber, with exhaust ports I don't take any valve guide off, just round it a little, at hi-revs the valves can dance around a bit causing compression loss...:)
@all4bspinnin311
@all4bspinnin311 8 лет назад
This is not true as fuel is injected typically at the end of the intake runner. Most of what you're referring to takes place inside the port on the head and in the combustion chamber itself. Not in the intake manifold. Cylinder head ports, even ported cnc'd ones have small ridges that allow the fuel to atomize properly. With an intake manifold, you should always go for a mirror finish to help with port velocity.
@madjimms
@madjimms 8 лет назад
Not true at all, mirror finish removes the tiny bumps and reduces air velocity. Look at the mythbusters episode with golf ball car. Intakes are the opposite (unless you make thousands of tiny dimples like a few drag strip guys have) the spots between the bumps create a pocket of reduced pressure and help acceleration and thus velocity. Its like first year physics.
@all4bspinnin311
@all4bspinnin311 8 лет назад
I disagree. I've tested several intake manifolds first hand. Stock, ported, and extrude honed and the extrude honed manifold had the highest velocity. It was the most smooth of the 3. Dont confuse intake chamber physics with manifolds.

@lsengines
@lsengines 9 лет назад
It will flow better, but what about the power? Better flow isn't always mean higher power. Intake manifold also needs turbulence to mix the fuel mixture better. Of course bigger casting lumps should be removed.. ..it would be interesting to see dynoresults between completely polished vs. semi-polished intake manifold..

Great video as always. How much power do you think you gained, I would guess maybe 1 HP, if it is even measurable. Please do not take this as offensive, but In my opinion this is a waste of time.
@wombatonsteroids
@wombatonsteroids 7 лет назад
Power isn't so much the point, delivery is. Porting/polishing an intake manifold, even if it doesn't yield a large HP gain on the top end, will help it breath better especially in light/moderate throttle situations and lower in the RPM band.
@OpenLogicEFI
@OpenLogicEFI 7 лет назад
Avery Alexander I don't think it would yield any peak horsepower at all, but something like this would be an extreme help where the power band starts to fall at higher RPMs lengthening the Power Band past Peak horsepower.. people forget that the peak horsepower is not the only defining Factor. great job on the manifold all the way I would have left some roughness for heat displacement I would have skipped the final polishing step..
@benhollinger2638
@benhollinger2638 7 лет назад
I agree, when I think of a ported and polished engine, I think of quick revs and clean burns. If you wanna make more HP you gotta move more air and burn more fuel. these techniques seem best for defining a power band. theses techs. work well on 2 stroke motors.

@jasonkehoe6633
@jasonkehoe6633 9 лет назад
you polish exhaust not intake as you need turbulence to mix the air fuel mixture ????
@turbo3oh
@turbo3oh 8 лет назад
Ehh that's debatable. Doing so would make more sense in a carbureted engine since the air fuel mixture has to travel the entire length of the runners. Since mfi engines inject fuel directly into the intake ports or the back of the valves. Manufacturers use combustion chamber design, vvt events, injector design and or piston design to create turbulence.
@jasonkehoe6633
@jasonkehoe6633 8 лет назад
Air fuel mix is essential carb or injection all injection does is measure out the fuel according to the read out of the o2 sensor as to what is burnt and what is left over . if the air moving over or under the inlet manifold is moving quicker than the fuel being injected you get blow by and over fueling causing higher running costs and less power
@pszresonation
@pszresonation 8 лет назад
Does that not deal more with carb than fuel injection. The ecu should control that by the o2, maf and/or the map senors.. and adjust accordingly.
@Nthefastlane
@Nthefastlane 6 лет назад
Jason Kehoe basically you kind of want to leave the cylinder head intake ports alone, but the intake manifold itself can be polished smooth because that's the air that comes in right before the intake ports where the injectors are. I've heard a bit of theory about a certain grit on the intake ports.

The casting isn't polished because the tiny bumps increase air velocity... Like a reverse golf ball.
@mororaph6046

Ideally the best is not polished but port and let a light "grain" finish but the heavy grain of stock bolt on parts aren't good at all. The tiny bumps are here because of the manufactured injected molding. ( sorry for my english )

You gotta be a dummy to pay anything near 700 bucks for an intake manifold that isn't polished. for fucks sake. This is why all the manufacturers switched to plastic intake manis. It's already smooth after the casting process. Also what does this do to inlet temps?
@wombatonsteroids
@wombatonsteroids 7 лет назад
If anything, inlet temps would drop because there would be less friction/resistance on the air as it's passing through the intake.
@nezerac

newpa1n Ya but it's pulling air from directly under the hood.
@wombatonsteroids

nezerac No, that's not how these intakes work. He has the plenum opened to show the ports, you attach a single throttle body to these intakes and then you can route the actual piping wherever you want. Look into the Hybrid-Racing/Ktuned cold air intake systems.
