The ugliest wave in the world. I've seen a photo of the bluff where a guy was at the bottom of the wave & the water in front of him was nearly as high as he was, i.e. the water was coming off a reef in front of him. Not exactly your favourite place wipe out at. Teahupoo is likewise very scary as there is a reef that rises steeply just below the surface. That's why the wave sucks up so quickly like that.

Shipstern bluff freak in that there are little waves off it so practically impossible to get out without wiping out !!! Love all wave spots they are unique in different ways !

tiffsaver Believe it or not, the wave in France is not considered by the big wave crew to be considered among the largest waves, which are a bit smaller, like Mavericks or Jaws, and, because these hellmen dont feel the wave breaks as hard from top to bottom. Although I've been a surfer for over thirty years, I find it amazing that they dont consider this a legitimate "largest wave". Simply, it does not have the power of the spots I mentioned; CRAZY!

It's so crazy! It's literally like a game of chance. I'm surprised they don't show deaths related to surfing more often. It makes sense they would train for breath underwater. They can't train any other way for breath.

Big waves at those place I agree but teahupoo is like crashing over 2 foot of water over the reef. Waves push over a 150 foot drop on to those reefs. Fast. Heavy. Unreal power.

Personally tahiti is the most dangerous I think because the thickness of the wave is so big and the water is shallow but personally my own opinion

KillingJoker nazare is actually one of the more easy big wave spots, it has no barrel and just rolls and has minimal chop most of the time so it's easy go hold your rail. Mavericks or Chopoo are the definition of difficult.

Sorry man But i realy doubt that. First, Cortez bank was knowed in the big wave surfing comunity as a must, way before Nazaré came to Public eyes. And i remember to see them (the big wave surfers) in "Surfer" magazine, way before, the name of Nazaré, was knowed around the world. I started to surf with 11 and in the earlyer's 80's, and along the way i started to know big wave (thats my obssession) riders, like Mark foo (Who in the middle 80's was credited for surfing the biggest wave ever, filmed...at Waimea bay. Mike Parsons, Ross Clark Jones, and others. They were the truely amazing "Daredevils" of the surfing world. RIP Mark. And abaut you claim that Cortez can get 25% bigger than Nazaré...!!!! Man, do you know what you are talking abaut...did ever seen a 50 foot wave breaking in front of you,Less a 100 foot Monster,like in Nazaré...!!!! I doubt it. Those claims, to start, There are not a single photo of such waves, At Cortez. And its impossible for a surfer,, to claim that he saw, 130 foot waves, while in the water or boat.Never happen. Its impossible without today's techology, mesure such waves, only by Eye. But in Nazaré you can, because you are There in the cliff, seing those Monster waves breaking Just 100 meters, in front of you. And that its real. I live 60 kms from Nazaré, and been There hundreds of times, and seen wit my eyes, those Monster walls of water breaking in front of me. No other place in the world you can see, waves that size breaking so close to you. Its the scariest thing i ever seen in my Life. The sheer Size and Sound of those "Freaks" breaking, its an Lifetime experience. Because, 100 foot sweels dont happen everyday or even year. I was Lucky to be There on the day, the record was broken, and even then, i and (and hundreds of hundreds of people) seen, even bigger waves, without no one taking the risk, breaking on the cliff side. The sound its Unbalivable. Cortez it big, But Nazaré, its Bigger way Bigger. And you can see and feel that for yourself, Just by going There on a big day, seat and enjoy.

I would rather wipe out at nazare, over shipstearns or teahupoo. I know it's the biggest but it's a crumbly break. That being said I've only road about a 12 foot wave hehe.

Teahupoo is so much faster than any other wave that if you're not pointing your boards toward land then you're getting sucked over. Turning into the wave means you're going over the falls and into a few feet of water in the lagoon ending with boo boo's all over your body...HA! If that doesn't get you then the foam ball will.
