Welcome to the first Seetal Cab ride on youtube. This is a unique line in many ways. For starters, the line is constructed much like that of a tramway, with many intersections without barriers and reduced clearance for standard rolling stock due to the close proximity of the road. Usually tramways of this caliber feature light rolling stock. The Seetal railway however, was run with the normal heavy, standard gauge rolling stock of the SBB, including Ae 6/6 locomotives for freight, Rbe 4/4 motor coaches, De 4/4s & the specially produced De 6/6. These do not have the braking capacity of their lighter, narrow gauge counterparts, which poses a risk when crossing intersections without barriers.
During the past 30 years, many changes have been made to improve safety, including a massive reduction in crossings, installed barriers and the rerouting of the line at certain points. Beforehand there were over 500 crossings without barriers or warning lights. In 2009, the number could be reduced to 85, all fitted with a warning system, many with barriers.
Moving the entire track or fitting each crossing with barriers would have meant the end for this line due to the high costs involved, keeping in mind that it has never been profitable since it's conception in 1882. Closing the line in favour of a bus service has been debated in the past, notably in the 1950's and again in the early 90's due the safety concerns. Thankfully though, the line has been preserved and solutions were found.
Over the years, locomotives, wagons and trains have also been specially produced and adapted for use on the Seetal line. Notable examples are the De 6/6 Seetal crocodile locomotive, the reflective yellow strips used on many locomotives to warn cars and the more recently produced RABe 520, which we are riding in today, produced with a narrower body than standard SBB stock, to avoid the strafing of cars.
Freight traffic is also a very interesting part of the history of the railway. There still is occasional traffic from Hochdorf in the direction of Lucerne, where the clearance for standard trains is given. Unfortunately local freight traffic has been declining nationwide, especially in areas where only small amounts of freight were being transported. A search for "Seetal SBB" on google image search will produce some interesting photos of how things used to be.
And now, enjoy the ride on this historic railway!

There are so beautiful railway lines in Swiss. Wonderful :-)

Switzerland has always looked at the rail system as a public service which is subsidised. It's not a profit making business like in the USA, UK, Australia and Canada. In those countries, if the route doesn't make a profit, they'll just shut it down, never mind the travelling public.

@lorirocks777
@lorirocks777 4 года назад

Swiss drivers are not dumb, as the American drivers quite often are! Nice to see that even not so profitable lines are saved. What would be the point of sending all the passengers and freight out on the streets among other cars and lorries and create even more road traffic? Daft I think! Very nice ride btw.
@peterlj613
@peterlj613 4 года назад
Freight train companies in America make nice profit, trains in Switzerland most likely highly subsidized. In Seon, 2 people boarded and 2 disembarked. At the same time, min 50 passenger cars passed by.

@@peterlj613 Maybe they do not make much money from this train line, but the trains in Switzerland are extremely busy, especially during rush hours. Plus the SBB has partnered up with the ZVV and the SZU and I am sure theyre bringing in a lot of profit too... many people here take public transport over cars due to these smaller connections that can get you basically everywhere in this country, you only need a car if you live in a more remote village, you know for groceries and stuff, but those villages are most probably connected by bus too. Also on the Swiss drivers being good theme, the drivers here are not any better than anywhere else, go by bus and train in the morning and look out the window, every second driver will have his/her phone out. So yeh... This coming from a Swiss citizen from Zurich

♥️lichen Dank 🙂

It's similar to NJ Transit's RiverLINE that operates between the Camden Waterfront (near the Battleship New Jersey) and the Trenton Transportation Center (for Amtrak NEC trains, NJ Transit's Northeast Corridor and SEPTA's Trenton Line commuter trains). Most of the line runs on former Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Line (PRSL) and Conrail trackage, however there is some street-running, especially in Burlington (near the Burlington-Bristol Bridge), with some of the line hugging the banks of the Delaware River between Roebling and Trenton. Biggest difference is that the RiverLINE uses diesel-electric equipment instead of overhead electrical traction.

Wonderful country, everything looks so organized. The drivers of cars know their place and are well trained to stop at signals. When your a well organized country and everyone knows their place and the consequences for not shows that you can run a service like this. No not in the U.S.A. The closest I've seen to this format is in San Francisco California with their cable cars acting like busses. Great country extremely clean. Kudos to the people who keep it that way.

@Frostwyrmer
@Frostwyrmer 4 года назад
@@lorirocks777 thanks a lot for clarifying so quickly! I thought all signals were strictly regulated by the federal Regulations, but I guess the shields with cars on it that are hanging below some of those signals indicate that a different set of signals may be in use in those segments, right? :) TIL something new :3
@EuroScot2023
@EuroScot2023 4 года назад
The mix of signals reflects the nature of this line. Colour-light signals controlling the interactions of the trains and tram signals because much of the route is crossing, and re-crossing, streets in towns. Its a pragmatic combination which helps maintain safety in all situations. Helped, of course, by Swiss people who treat trains as routine but with suitable respect.

I remember the Seetal being so tight at loading gauge/gabarit the train need to have a special clearance only for this line... Is it true? Fluid video and beautiful as always. If is there a way, I would like to contribute with something!

Yes, that's right. That's very nice of you. Your appreciation is contribution enough. However you can contribute financially if you have paypal via the link on my channel. If you'd like a video download in return, just state which one you'd like in the comment. Or even better, if you are or know somebody who drives anything on rails, you can contribute with a video :)

@@lorirocks777 Thank you very much! I donated so you can have my little support for this channel and the beautiful trips. As you offered the possibility of receiving a video, I will choose the high speed tilt train between Geneva and Zurich (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aHpChnRzZXo.html), that reflects my current mood of running and living a lot this days. I am glad and thankful.

Very cool line. Felt like a narrow gauge track. Nice to see GTW in SBB livery. I have only seen them in Thurbo livery

These GTWs are slightly different, with a narrower profile
