edit: Hi friends!! I am able to better address all the comments now, so I want to provide some context to any new watchers of this vid and also address comments as a whole! 1: this video is severely un-researched and that was my bad- i had no idea cara was such a developed app, and that it is not meant to be a replacement or competitor for instagram! it also DOES NOT abuse your posts or use your art to train AI (i did mention that there was a rumor of that, which i shouldn't have spread, but i would like to amend that my general point was that ANY app could develop into having the same threats and problems as IG, but I did not express that point well AT ALL!!) 2: give cara a chance if it interests you!! i should have taken some time to see the other side of argument in this video, and talk about the positives and possibilities of cara. there were extenuating circumstances in the production of this video, and i was trying to keep it as short as possible. but basically, cara could absolutely have a place for artists, for things like networking, socialization and community at the very least! 3: to address the comments: thank you guys for being so chill and respectful! you guys are literally always blowing me away with how lucky i am to have such an awesome community around me!! i can see that you guys didn't take issue with me expressing my opinions, but rather with the straight up ignorance i went into this video with: both with my bad choice to go into this video without doing a DROP of research, and also with my blinders up about how any of this stuff might be affecting other artists. And I really am sorry about that! While this video was definitely about my opinion and from my perspective, i do have to remember that what I say isn't going to a void. i do have some level of responsibility to not talk out of my butt. and i totally neglected that this time. if i don't want to do research on something, i should keep my mouth shut!! I posted a community post responding to the feedback I have been getting until I am able to directly address comments!! Thanks for the feedback guys!!! Sorry I approached this in such a dumb way- i was lost in the excitement of finally being able to make a video I wanted to make a while ago, and really didn’t think about how it might not be accurate anymore.

No need to be sorry. You were explicitly clear that this was an opinion. Major news sources put out “opinion articles” discussing topics. You have every right to do so 👑 You could maybe add “opinion:” to the beginning of your video.

Don’t apologize! Your point is absolutely correct. Most people aren’t going to move over to Cara because they have no reason to. Instagram had a large user base of many types of people. And that’s exactly what you said.

Girl, this isn't like Artfol at all! Please, do a better research. Getting fed up with IG shady practices is only one reason why Cara has been so resonant within the community. The person who made Cara and what she stands for is the biggest difference this time, and why Cara has a brighter future than all of those other exodus moments over the last few years. It's not the kind of IG's future, but it def has the potential to change the landscape of art distribution. Please, research the app, bc the way you just dumped your own opinions, saying that you didn't even care to look up anything about the app you're talking about as well as briefly mentioning a rumor about Cara you saw on someone's story - all of that sounds like you're just spreading misinformation yourself, which honestly was appalling to listen to. I mean no offense - you have the right to express your own views atm and put as many disclaimers as you want, but please, don't half-slander something you haven't even looked into.

I completely understand what you're saying! I had no idea Cara was such a different situation, but even so, if I wasn't willing to research, I simply should have kept my mouth shut. Thank you for taking the time to provide this information!!
@WLVFX

Sorry but your information on AI for Cara is wrong and not correct at all. If you read Cara's FAQs it specifically states it doesn't train your art on AI at all and has no plans to in the future. Further more it has a feature that when an AI bot tries to copy your image, it will only get a blurred version of the image. The reason why Cara won't use AI in the future has a lot to do with the founder of Cara, who is a photographer. If you live in America, then you can't opt out of the AI policy by meta. It is only for people who live in the EU who have GDPR rules that protect their rights and can opt out of AI training by sending meta a form you fill out.

Thank you for sharing!! I absolutely should not have spread any sort of rumors about Cara if I wasn't willing to put in any research. Thank you for letting me know I was wrong and providing this info!

While i don't disagree with the points in the video, but if you are an artist starting out on instagram the room for growth just really isn't good anymore. It's one thing to have an established community on insta but a lot of artists venting their frustrations with the platform don't really have that. Because you can't look at posts chronologically anymore it really kills smaller accounts. I've been posting on insta for years but have not had as significant growth as on tiktok and more recently youtube,

I feel like a lot of what you’re saying is true, I don’t think apps like cara will ever fully replace instagram but I think if apps like Cara develop into having a more broad appeal they would work well. I’m also someone who’s semi reliant on instagram and I just think it sucks. I do think that you are wrong though about nobody leaving Instagram, because I have seen people who have really truly left the app and this has been seen in a genuinely more serious light.
@Lilstarnerd
@Lilstarnerd 5 дней назад
ooh interesting! i really haven't seen anyone leaving instagram, so it's definitely interesting to hear that you ARE seeing people leave! it would be interesting to see how IG would react to so many people quitting. also, i agree, IG does suck!
@artwithleah
@artwithleah 7 дней назад
I did decide to quit instagram. I personally never saw any success after 10ish years of use. My last two years on RU-vid have been the most substantial growth I’ve seen for attention on my art. I have little interest in switching to another platform although Cara does seem a lot more appealing, I’m choosing to put more effort into RU-vid and my email list. Hopefully it’s better in the long run. I just can’t get behind Instagram because of how difficult it is to be seen and opt out of ai
@Lilstarnerd

That is totally fair!! I definitely think that NO ONE has to use IG if they don't want to!! IMO youtube is a great place to be putting your efforts into!

I'm only halfway through your video so I apologize if I miss something. In general I agree with your points when it comes to new sites for artists like inkblot or artfol. I personally haven't wasted my time joining them because I know that the communities won't last and the lack of funding for these sites will become a problem in the long run. Didn't paigeeworld die because it wasn't making any money? Anyway, in regards to Cara, I feel like people are missing the point of the site 😅 Unfortunately, it becoming so popular out of the sudden brought people who thought it is nothing but an instagram dupe. The site is actually trying to be an alternative for Artstation - the portfolio part of it is the main thing, social aspects come second. Cara def shouldn't be used as the main posting place for anyone. It might be good for people who want to try and get into the industry, not necessarily for hobbyists or people looking for a place to post art and dip.
@teddybearmei8713
@teddybearmei8713 7 дней назад
zemotion never mentioned what it would be an alternative to, just only what it is (the creator) and for them it is just a safe space where people can post their stuff without worrying about ai all the damn time.
@Lilstarnerd
@Lilstarnerd 5 дней назад
lack of funding is actually not something i've considered, but that's a good point! i've only see these apps die out quickly, but when i do imagine them becoming successful and lasting, i'd imagine these apps (excluding cara since i'm focusing on more IG-dupe apps) would eventually have many of the same problems as IG!

I rewatched it bc I fall asleep to your videos most nights. I just want to say - if I were to play a drinking game and take a shot each time you said “I’m not educated on this”, “These are uneducated opinions and you shouldn’t take them as facts”, “I’m not basing this off credible sources. I have no idea if information is correct.” “This is based on my experience with Artful, not Cara”, “These opinions are specific to me”, I would likely be dead. I feel like you gave so many disclaimers that a fair portion of the video wasn’t even opinions - just the disclaimers themselves 😂 I’m just saying in case you’re feeling like you did something terrible.

I've downloaded cara and it is slow, but it's still in beta. I still have instagram and am not posting photos as often, but since I'm in europe I was able to opt out of AI (presuming that means something). I completely understand why others are moving to different platforms if they cannot opt out and protect their art from AI. Especially as a small account, insta is very difficult to grow on nowadays and actually have your posts seen. Cara is different in that it's more of a place for artists to socialise which has a really lovely community feel, but insta is getting worse. So if you haven't got much of a platform already then absolutely try other socials, why would you not?
@Lilstarnerd
@Lilstarnerd 5 дней назад
that is a great point!! i was definitely focused on my own experience, and didn't consider the appeal an app like cara might have to someone whose experience with IG is basically already moot.

@Lilstarnerd 5 дней назад
i dislike it too!! i have (a probably very naive) hope that the gov't will step in soon, simply because there have been SO many scandalous situations with companies using AI lately that are very much violations of personal rights. using tumblr as an artist is not something i've considered, i hope that is going well!!!

That portrait is so good! I'm always so surprised how you can make people look so realistic. I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts in another video about why you don't mind much about your posts being used to train AI. I understand your reasons for not using Cara, but I'm interested specifically why AI training off your work doesn't bother you much
@Lilstarnerd
@Lilstarnerd 5 дней назад
i absolutely DO mind my posts being used to train AI!!!!!! i absolutely take issue with this!! and i certainly understand other artists being very afraid of this! but for me personally, that fear isn't enough for me to leave the app entirely, mainly because i think this would be an issue eventually ANYWHERE, but mostly because this is my job and i can't afford to stop posting my art.

I agree and disagree, Cara has the potential to replace Instagram but the cold truth is that it will never. Instagram is filled with different creators, unlike Cara which is only artist-focused. You can only get so much support from other artists as they can make their own artwork and generally would not choose to buy yours, unlike the diverse pool of different creators and people that Instagram has. It just will never be the same.

(edit: same thoughts omg twimsies) Haven't watched the video yet but my immediate thoughts are: same thing happened with threads and twitter and koo and twitter, at the end pf the day, these big corp social media will never be replaced and if you as a small business owner or small creator, you're forced fo stay in the big corp social media bc that's where everyone is. I feel like every few months something like this happens, everyone says they're leaving, deactivate the accounts etc, and i then they comeback bc that's a already stablish social media, people already have ig or wtv, they don't have cara and they most likely won't intall it just to consume a artists work
@Lilstarnerd
@Lilstarnerd 5 дней назад
i think you said it perfectly- creators are "forced" to stay on these big apps, no matter how horrible they become. i haven't enjoyed IG for a while, but i know it's a vital part of my job and therefore try not to see it as the enemy.

so I hope this helps anyone, the AI program is very much real, and they do use any post anyone on the app posts. there is a way to opt out of it, but from what I heard, US users cannot hop out. I live in Europe so I was able to opt out of it, all you have to do is go to your settings, privacy policy, and when you click that a box at the top of the page should appear talking about this new AI training program, then you have to fill a form stating why you want to opt-out (the link is in that box), what country you are from etc, and you should receive an email from meta saying if they will let you or not opt out of the program. Tbh, I don't think people should have to opt out but rather choose if they want to be in it in the first place. Sneakily adding those features is a violation of the very own policy we agreed on as signing up on instagram

I am feeling the same way about the point that Instagram has more of a broad audience. I genuinely hope the best for Cara and I think it has a lot of potential to be an awesome app in its own right, but I also am not fully giving up on Instagram because of the reasons you said. With Cara so far I do like just seeing art posts and having a place just for us. I just wish we could go back to 4-5+ years ago insta :( I feel like I joined the art community right at the end of its peak and it’s been super frustrating to watch the decline. My art skills are better now but the vibes/ethics/growth of instagram and other places like “twitter” (still in denial about the name change) are not great rn 🤣

It is not right what they are doing with meta.. and I hate the fact that so many good artist are leaving … and I can understand it. Cara by the way is so comfy to use and I feel since years that I have more people who can see me! Without that i do anything crazy at all. I just post and I see so many so cool artist there. And i feel so much love and support there 💗

I had a similar thought that if it's for artists, it's not going to be popular enough to build a following because almost everyone I do work for arn't artists. Could be useful for getting studio work though, but arstation exists and that's where recruiters go.

I dunno though, certain points are valid alright but Cara IS still in its beta stages right?! Which means it probably will grow? i definitely did not research, which, if i was unwilling to research i shouldn't have made the video! i did try to make it very clear in the video that this video was originally based on my experience with the artfol app, that it was unresearched, and it was based on my opinions/perspective and to not take it as fact. however, i still should have taken the time to make sure i wasn't spreading any misinformation.

Re: the Meta AI thing - you can opt out very easily - but only if you're in Europe. They actually email you, the user, to tell you where you can find the form to opt out. You just write them, "hey the GDPR applies to me and i don't want you to use any of my personal details for your AI" and they opt you out. Sadly though, this is currently Europe-exclusive (probably because they HAVE to let Europeans opt out since it's personal data)

Lowkey, I feel like every artist that thinks we should all stay on Instagram is one of the ones that benefitted from the era of chronological feed and hashtag search. Respectfully, what do y'all want us small artists to do? Keep posting to the void? 😭
@Lilstarnerd
@Lilstarnerd 5 дней назад
that is so fair!! i have always said that any part of being successful in this job, especially online, is partly based in pure luck. and it was definitely a lot easier to be lucky back then!! the experience of smaller creators is not something i considered in this video, and it's a great point, as someone else mentioned- some creators really have no incentive to stay on IG, so why not move to another app? I will say, while IG definitely makes it harder now, I think there will always be an element of "posting to the void" while working towards success in the arts/entertainment field.

Finally someone said it! all of this reminds me of what's happening with Adobe these days, should we support a company which steals art to train AI? Absolutely not but in reality Adobe will always be the standard for a lot of reasons and as a fellow artist and graphic designer I don't think any program will replace any Adobe program; especially in professional corporate settings. Ideally we should all boycott Adobe so that they'll be under pressure and eventually change their policy but in reality it's the industry standard just like Instagram.
@Lilstarnerd
@Lilstarnerd 5 дней назад
well said!! i'm in the middle of illustrating a graphic novel, and i don't think the writer would appreciate if i told him I had to postpone his project because I took issue with Adobe. I would LOVE for us all to boycott companies like meta and abode to express our outrage, as i'm sure many people would, but unfortunately, the world keeps spinning. as this is my job, i could not at all afford to stop posting on IG or using Adobe to edit videos until they changed their policies. i think i expressed it poorly in my video, but i do feel that as I have very little choice in this matter, I should move forward with the best mindset I can.

I just post because i want to post my art in a organized way, not looking for any popularity or having a quantity of followers or anything similar.. i just use Instagram as an album and i already have Instagram, im not interested in another app to post my stuff.. Keep on saying what you feel.. people shouldn't get upset because everyone has its own opinion and can do what they feel like without following a crowd.. everyone should do what they think is best for them without trying to prove their own opinions to others.. let people do what they feel comfortable with without judgement. 🙌🏽🩷
