Great insight guys. Looking into buying an L322 so yours and the specialist attention to detail, really helps me in my decision making. For a novice, are there any other key issues with the drive experience for people to watch out for?
@Back_Road_Hero
@Back_Road_Hero 2 года назад
If you know about these could you answer Henry’s question please? Here’s my 2 pence worth. The 4.4 TDV8 is pretty robust as it’s the last of this generation and mostly everything was sorted by then. Earlier models have weaker gearboxes especially the BMW TD6 which was at its design limit. The egr valves need doing prior to 100k miles and the intercooler on top of the engine can leak. It’s just a matter of testing everything out inc transfer box and low ratios etc. I’ll be doing an ultimate buyers guide but for now I’m still in the research stage. There are others on here that will hopefully comment and help you out. 🙏 Ed

I bought a low mileage Supercharged. Not as economical as the TD but I have others car for that. Supercharged is much more reliable than the TD. No egr issues. Get a full Land Rover specialist check up ahead of any purchase and put aside 10% of the purchase price for any repairs. I had the belts and tensioners changed, transmission service, new spare key and engine service too. Been driving it for a year and a half now without issue. Excellent car. Zero regrets.

@@wrathgar11 The 4.2 S/C is definitely the way to go if you're not doing big miles as it's about as bullet proof an engine as you will ever find in an LR and obviously doesn't suffer the timing chain issues of its 5.0 S/C replacement. They sound amazing with the resonator removed and no drone.

Informative video. We are a dealership ourselves and whilst we try and go the extra mile in terms of preparation, it should also be the case that customer expectations fall in line for an 11 year old car that has covered nearly 90,000 miles. It isn't realistic to expect a full clean bill of health in every area and as long as there are no 'major' issues, rejection should not be the first thought.
@Back_Road_Hero
@Back_Road_Hero 2 года назад
Our thoughts exactly. Our conversation was that unless the two major issues were corrected then we would be rejecting the car. We didn’t actually get to that point. However our dealings with the salesperson involved led us to believe that little would be done. Return was only then on the cards. As of today almost all has been put right saving us about £1500 that we would have otherwise had to spend ourselves. I have realistic expectations given it’s 10 years old but the prop shaft and the belts were the issues needing immediate attention. Thanks for commenting. Ed Ps I’ve also owned a used car dealership in the past so can see it from both aspects.

I took it to my RR specialist for a full report and the links appeared to be the only issue. Interesting philosophy on car-buying in the UK vs. US. In the US it is HIGHLY recommended to get a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) before you sign a contract, even with a dealer. After that, there is some recourse for returning a car to a dealer in my state (I think 3 days???), but nothing like the laws you guys have. Is a PPI recommended in England as well?

On more specialist and high value cars a ppi is still an option but you’ll pay typically 5% of the value of the car with a minimum and maximum cost. Given the robust ‘lemon’ laws here sometimes it’s just easier to see what you’ve got after purchase. Ed

I think you'll be fine, it will straighten itself out. Problem with LR they need a level of TLC to get over the short comings of the design phase of the vehicles. After seeing the after effects of a various issues, i very much doubt LR ever seasoned any of the castings. If you're looking at a L322 or any LR, ask to have it inspected by a third party, or if you know your nuts & bolts take a torch and have a good look around it, on a lift is heaps better, stick in a OBD scanner, you most likely won't see all errors, but it will give you a heads up.

I have run a lot of Range Rovers over the years,some brilliant others not so but they are beautiful to drive and be in,nothing I have ever owned comes close to a RR but they are expensive to repair if you go to the main agents, all vehicles have their faults and RR are no different just don’t expect an £80,000 car for £6000-00 to be perfect because your going to be bitterly disappointed,trying to run one of these vehicles on a shoestring is just NOT POSSIBLE and your a Brave or Foolish person to try,the insurance and road tax is high plus the fuel cost and maintenance costs all adds up so be prepared to spend a few quid if it’s required,their NOT cheap to run.

I did not mean to insult you in anyway but people buy these vehicles that are 12 years old and expect them to run like new and they don’t. Paying £16,000 for one is NOT loose change and you have every right to expect a decent vehicle for that money,I wish you all the best with yours,just keep the engine oil changed regularly because if those turbo oil return pipes block up with carbon you’ll be looking at a £5000-00 plus bill for 2turbos to be fitted.

No just right they didn’t come and get it off you - if you want it fixed you bring it to them. If you’re afraid of repair bills then don’t buy a Range Rover 🤦🏼‍♂️ they’re fantastic , but they’re complicated luxury cars and they need maintaining. Honestly what do you expect buying a 12yr old range rover for 15% of its new value. Fair enough things like the fuel filler not opening should be fixed, but the rest of it.. it's a *very* used car.. you need to have realistic expectations of what condition a car that's basically on its last legs is going to be in. Classic champagne tastes and lemonade money..

We don’t all want to buy a new one Max. The two things we objected to were the belts needed changing which it had no record of and were squeaking and the failed rear prop shaft bearing. Hi Kenneth. Part of the appeal really. With the mot being a government run thing ‘back home’ it’s more strictly enforced. It spent time there at the Manor House. The plate was already on it when purchased.

Hi, I have been following your channel for a while and now I'm the one with faulty L322. I bought the car 20 days ago and ever since the car has that problem where some "electrical issue" is draining the battery in 2-3 days when the car is in stand still. I called the dealer and he took the car back 3 times already. 3 days ago I was told it is fixed, but today I got the message "Low Battery, please start engine". I have already messaged the dealer, but I can already tell he is becoming less and less keen to fix the issue. What are my options, can I just say that if they won't fix it permanently in 30 days from the purchase date, I want a full refund? (As that would be the best, but the V5C form is already with DVLA)... Anyone, please advise.
@Back_Road_Hero
@Back_Road_Hero 2 года назад
You’ve given them ample opportunity already to fix it. Within 30 days you can reject it on the basis that it’s unfit for purpose and not in a condition that an average person would expect. They don’t have a right to have a go at fixing it. After 30 days your rights diminish. They might mess you about to cross this threshold. If I were you I’d just return it. Sounds like an issue that you’ll be chasing forever. It’s not your problem at this stage it’s theirs. Just write to them and say you’d like to exercise your rights to return the vehicle as you can’t leave it parked for more than a few days. Imagine if you went on holiday? You can expect full payment within 14 days of return. Sorry to hear you’re having trouble as they’re great cars but you don’t want to saddled with this. Email them but back that up by sending a letter registered post so you can confirm delivery. Say that the V5 will be forwarded to them as soon as you receive it but it usually doesn’t take that long, I’m surprised you haven’t received it already. @@Back_Road_Hero Ed I'm going to return the car on Saturday as I was having a trouble with star the engine today again. Another great video. Cannot wait for the next installment. Absolutely agree with you regarding a dealership purchase. You should not have to go through all this. I don't think many places honour the PDI and other so called 110 point checklists. I purchased a 3 year old car some years ago from a well known dealer. I decided to get it inspected by the AA for my piece of mind... something you should not have to do... They came back and told me the car shouldn't legally be for sale. The front windscreen washer jet was misaligned and the rear tyres were of a different size to the front! The dealer was reluctant to let me inspect the car as it's a hassle for them and they have to have the car up on ramps for the inspection us allow the inspector a 6 mile drive. Moral of the story is that you cannot trust anybody, it's a sad state of affairs.

Of course I don’t expect it to be faultless. But I’d like to get it close, eventually. Sorry if it came across that way. We knew we’d have to spend the money on the missing bits ourselves. You truly are a nightmare customer. It's a 10 yo machine with an amazing amount of tech on it that can break. These things are inetivable and normal when buying used. You are trying to get a new car experience on a used car budget. It's aggrevating really, when you bought the car I'm sure you could have payed an independant mechanic to come look over the car and I bet the dealer would've had no problem with that. But you didnt, instead they're forced to take back a car with extra miles and possible wear thanks to some BS law. Sorry to say this but I really find this a horrid practise, a grown man takes responsability for his choice and shouldn't be sheltered like a minor from making potential bad decisions.

I take it you’re a trader? You watched it then? To the end? If you’d bothered then you’d realise we sent it back only for auxiliary belts and prop bearing. We still have it but I wasn’t going to spend £1500 on something that should have been done before being presented for sale. Things that should have been done at pdi. I’m an ex trader myself and am pissed off when a dealer just washes a vehicle and passes it on for a massive profit. Hoping that the unsuspecting customer won’t notice. Don’t jump to conclusions without knowing all the facts or watching to the end. Many won’t react to insults like yours, but I’m not one of the ‘many’. Ed
