i absolutely love this video i watched all of it and listened to all of it. these are my favorite kind of videos thank u for tis lauren i hope u make more of these podcasts miht not be one of the most viewed videos but the ones who watch them definitely stick to them, also question were ur parents ever against you going with art as a major ever since hs, uni etc?

i'm planning to major art in a regular university and this video excites me because something you kept saying is that you learned this and that. I want to learn, I want to get better, I want to be really good. Thank you for this

I relate to these stories so much- every teacher I had basically talked me into believing I couldn't be an artist as a career, so I settled for wanting to be an "English" major so I could read and discuss literature and storytelling for a living- because everyone around me, in spite of my obvious affinity for and skill in art, would just ask what I wanted to do for a career, as if it wasn't obvious. I grew up telling everyone I wanted to be an artist, but even my parents said it wasn't a real job, so from a young age I just talked myself into thinking I was passionate about writing/reading enough to spend my life doing it for a living, and just paint in my spare time. Well, as of now, I still don't make a living from my art, but it's what I spend most of my spare time doing and I have a job to sustain me until my art is known enough. All I want to do is paint and draw and make things that make me happy, and many people make a living doing this. I don't understand how art isn't a 'valid' enough career path for people to strive to and have others take them seriously. Art isn't lazy.

I'm 15 and in 8th grade because I moved countries when I was younger, just like you. It's comforting to know that someone I admire has shared similar experiences :)

As someone who's done undergrad and grad in art schools and also plans to work as a professor in the future, I'm not sure you would've been happy there either. You kept bringing up that there were classes you didn't need or didn't apply to you personally but the thing is, art school is like that too. I went in as a photo major but in my first year there, I think I only touched a camera once. The majority of my classes were traditional art (drawing, color theory, 2D design, etc.) that everyone had to take regardless of what they planned to pursue. Looking back, I really appreciated those classes because if I really tried, I could find something that applied to photography. Hell, even in my senior year I was taking classes that had nothing to do with my major. I took visual and ethical anthropology, intro to graphic design, screenprinting, etc. and you know why? Because I could integrate what I was learning into my art even if there wasn't a clear benefit. Anthropology: I learned how to better source my supplies and appeal to people who lived vastly different lives. Graphic design: I learned how to take up space on a page better and how I can improve people's line of sight. Screenprinting: do you know how much custom backdrops are? Expensive as all hell if you want good quality. As far as the teachers, oof, art school professors don't give a rat's ass about people's feelings, and tbh neither do the students lol. Department critiques were always the most nerve-wracking thing. Besides having all the professors and students in that major there, oftentimes there are guest critics who are much harsher. I can't even count the number of times I felt like I was going to cry as I was trying to defend my work. But in hindsight, while everyone had their own styles and sometimes worked in completely different mediums, their critique usually helped me in broadening my ideas, experimenting with other things, and figuring out how to apply them to my art. Then for grad school, I went to one of the top animation schools in the US, and let me tell you, if you didn't break down at least once from either your professors or just the classes themselves, you were doing something wrong *but* I did come out a better artist. I'm not going to say the school because I don't want to discourage others from going because despite what I said, it was definitely my favorite school. So yes, while I think art school is beneficial if you choose to pursue art, some people won't like the experience regardless. I'm not saying this is the case for you 100%. I'm really just putting it out there for anyone who's trying to decide between a regular uni vs an art school. Note: You also tend to sacrifice the overall general college experience because art schools are so hyper-focused on art.

Hearing your horror stories of your art teacher and art professors made me appreciate the ones that I had even more. Though I can relate with you on saying how art classes in high school don't focus on personal artistic growth and interests, once I got to college (I go to a Tech School that had an Art Department) I improved so much on understanding anatomy, composition, digital art, and even mediums I would've never used on my own like oil paint, charcoal, pastels, ceramics, etc.

As someone who’s currently taking Lower level art classes, I resonate with the bored feeling and feeling like I’m not ever going to get to do what I want. I’ve just tried to make the most of it, I try to enjoy these different mediums and apply them to my own projects. Because no matter what, how hard the day has been, I can come home and draw what I want to draw. And no one is stopping me

Ahh this was so nice! I pulled up some animal crossing music (particularly the relaxing, night time songs) to play along with your video and it worked out great. collage was my favorite art class. I loved it so much and I made so many cool pieces that I still have. I can't believe you didn't like that, but at the time I didn't do art or drawing, so I didn't care about learning anything. I just wanted to have fun, which I did.

Listening to this while I dabble in digital art. I know what you went through. My family moved right in the middle of the first semester of my Junior year of High School. My interest was in computer science, and they had already denied me going to the vocational school to take computer science in my previous high school, as the counselor felt that computers were a dead end, and he wanted all males to study shop and mechanical repair so we could be workers for the local factory. The new school was in a wealthy neighborhood, and transferred me to the vocational school as a form of discrimination, (I was from West Virginia originally, and they saw me as nothing but an ignorant hick, not worth their time to educate) and I let them. :) When I got there, I was already into computers and was learning nothing new, so the computer science teacher let me work ahead and take the finals, and put me to work as a lab assistant. I spent my senior year in High School taking the required general courses in the morning, then spending the rest of the day processing all the jobs for the school admin staff as an unpaid intern. There was no internet in those days, it was all computer magazines, and every related book in the county library. :) Frankly, I have taught myself much more over the years by self study than I ever learned in High School. And if you look on RU-vid, you'll find a good number of professional artist that will tell you not to waste your money on those expensive art schools. Your portfolio is the only thing an employer is going to care about. If you need the leg up, your local college is a much better deal than an expensive art school.

Okay, i'm here for the art but I stayed for the story! ^u^ let's make one thing clear, I LOVE the girl you drew her outfit and her hair and smile!!! She looks so pretty! Story part, art class in school or college usually sucks. The point of art is letting yourself be creative and step out of your comfort zone. I have my own art style, but my sophomore, junior, and senior years of highschool, I took advanced art classes so that I could be creative and do something I loved. Like, my art style is mostly paper drawings without anything super special, I always color them digitally. However, in school i got to be creative and paint things too, which was fun for me. I also got to use the expensive colored pencils and tried to do different art styles a bit too. Also, making posters and painting characters on posters was fun too. I had to do a Moomins one one time, and try to replicate that art style. College/Uni art classes should be the same. Like, you're an adult! If art is your passion then you would have took art classes in the past, right? Most people have already found their art style, but still want to try different stuff. It also sucks when teachers/professors make students redo work because it's not "good enough" to fit in with all the realism and everything else. Not everyone wants to draw in the same art style, and some people want to try different techniques and styles.

I had a similar situation in school when I changed A Levels. There was a mix up and I got put on the wrong course, so I got to change my course to Fine Art two weeks into the term and it was awkward for the first week lol

everything you've been mentioning in this video man... Like I honestly relate to how high school just makes it so difficult for artists to improve and have great art classes! Always throwing you around in classes you've taken and if your art teacher is tryna bring you outta the regular classes and the counselor "SOMEHOWWW" can't do that? that sucks. I've gone through this my senior year :c and I am glad you spoke about these things, because it's given me bigger perspective on continuing my art career, I haven't done collage yet but I graduated Thankfully. im a freshman, bout to be on the second semester and I still don't know who to talk to. there's people that talk to me but I am not to keen on talking to them 😭. i think for this second semester I have an art class but before I had art history and it was cool but most ppl were older.

i have a scar on my drawing hand as well tho it was when i burnt myself whilst frying some spring rolls ;-; it's healed up but still visible. i hear Bio Oil works well on scars tho i haven't tried that out

Hey Ayeoops I've been a fan on your channel for quite some time and I love the type of videos you put out! I too wanted to go to art school but as you said the cost for art school is very high, so I ended up graduating with a degree in Graphic Design. Am I really passionate about doing graphic design? Tbh not really, I just wanted to do get a degree in something in the arts field. I did enjoy my classes as it taught me to get out of my comfort zone such as taking a class on screen printing and ceramics. Both of those are something I would've never done! I too was drawing while listening to your podcast and relating to your points felt a different type of wave. I would love to learn more about your day and possibly have a conversation with you!
