Theory: this is only part one, part two is when the protagonist found out that the torch can bring dead mobs back to life (showing how the torch revived the withers), and he goes back to get the torch and revive the dog.

We never actually see the dog die; only him or her cornered, a shocked expression from the protagonist, the dropped torch, and the slowly rising enemies. This does strongly hint at death, but it is completely possible that the dog survives. Side note: I didn't really like the animation, not because it was a Minecraft animation, but because of the poorly designed/nearly nonexistent plot line. Seems too throw-emotional-clips-together-y for my taste. Dead dog is also too cliché of a trope for me.
