I have a ton of empty bags at my place, grocery bags... last night I was bored and decided to give this a try. Boy does it ever work. I'm currently working on making a plastic mat for my bathroom so the crappy tiles don't get any more ruined than they already are.
For over 20 years I've made bags using scraps of fabric left over from sewing. But I'd never thought of making a bag out of those annoying grocery bags. This is a great rainy day craft idea for me and my daughter.
A wonderful friend who crochets all the time (retired) gave a large one of these to me & my wife as a wedding gift along with many other yarn-crocheted items. This bag is now our favorite bag and we are amazed at how strong they are. Everywhere we go people remark on it (it's red, white and blue but otherwise the same). She says it takes her 11 hours to make one bag so if you get one as a gift, appreciate the time & effort that goes into it
It’s the first time ever that I leave comment, just to let you know that this is the most incredible, genial and amazing work I’ve ever seen here on RU-vid. Wow. Thank you so much, you inspired me a lot.
I purchased a couple of these bags made out of bags at a nursing home’s event over 10 years ago. I still use them to grocery shop. They are very sturdy.
This is awesome!!! Beyond cool! So many perks by doing this! You can make a waterproof beach bag! The bags are free, instead of spending $$ on yarn! You're recycling. It'll last a much longer time! No piling (purses/bags made from yarn tend to pile & wear out)! It'd be a lot sturdier & actually stand up, than a bag made from yarn! I could go on... I'm definitely doing this! Thanks!!
My grandma used to do this over 20 years ago. When I was just 7 or 8 (now I'm 30). She used to make shopping bags and footwear for home for us. It was awesome. So cool that people are now waking up to it and really recycling on their own. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This is probably the simplest and easiest method I've found for making plarn. Love it and now I have a use for all the bags i seem to collect. This is a great video. So glad I found it.
My mom makes this even a table cloth,a blanket to dress up the bed I wish I knew how to share the pictures is really really nice keeps her busy at age 80
AWESOME idea for recycling your grocery bags. And remember that different stores have different colors. I think that they would make great gifts for your family and friends.
Wow what a good way to get all the worthless plastic into something so handy and beautifull....future is looking a little beter if people have such great ideas.......thanks for sharing
More than 500 people voted this down?? I can't imagine anyone not liking this idea, even if they aren't crafty enough to make one themselves. These bags will last forever and look really easy to keep clean.
Who would give this video a thumbs down ??????!!! and why ?????? This is an amazing idea. I’ve been making these for years but it’s good to share this for those who agree with saving the earth even if it’s one plastic bag at a time 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
It looks like it is made from jute. What a great way to repurpose plastic bags. The city where I live has banned these single use bags for a few years now but the heavier plastic bags are still handed out. I might start to gather a few of these to repurpose.
Almost 50 years ago, my sisters and I used bread bags to crochet a door mat and it lasted years. This style of use of plastic to help save the earth has always been available. It is the motivation to do so.
I had a bag like this once, made by a friend of the family. Ugly as sin but a really nice way to recycle. Lasted me a really long time. Edit to clarify: Mine was ugly. Yours looks great. 👍
Back in the 70's my grandmother was featured in the newspaper for crocheting with plastic bags. Plastic store bags were not available back then, so she used the plastic bags from bread. She made a lot of purses and would work beads into her crochet patterns. Vinyl and plastic were very popular in the 70's and the bread wrappers added colors to the design.
My grandma did too. She was born in 1895 so I've seen all kinds of stuff! She also used bread bags...the ties weaved for handles. She would also crochet small throw rugs out of plastic
Love this! I cannot find a place to recycle my bags anymore and I have a huge pile that I can't bring myself to throw away. I never thought to make them into yarn. Definitely going to knit a grocery bag now.
When I was in high school a friend of mine was crocheting small area rugs out of bread bags. She said her mother taught her how to do it. Back then bread came wraped in very colorful plastic bags. I can imagine how one of your baskets would look made out of Wonder Bread or Webers Bread wrappers. Love this idea
This is the best example I’ve seen of this method.... that tote is gorgeous! You’ve also provided the clearest instructions I’ve seen...... this is encouraging to me! Thank you for posting.
My Albanian grandmother used to make us different bags from plastic yarn! I always wondered how that was possible and now I know how! Thanks for an amazing video.
This is mind blowing. You CAN literally crochet with ANYTHING. crazy. Thank you for this cool video! Easy to follow great idea. Save our oceans!! Don’t throw away bags!
Thank you for saving the planet/environment and inspiring others to do the same. I don't crochet or knit but this video was in my recommendations and I'm so glad to have watched it. I wish I could do something as cool as this!
If i didnt know it was grocery bags o I would never have guessed! Such a beautiful simple bag that i would probably buy for the beach or shopping 😁 amazing job!!
I am a 35 yo mixed race man. I have problematic hands and don't even know how crochet. But I watched just to understand the mechanics behind this. Awesome, just awesome. 5 stars
I think linking the loops or winding the plarn would be easiest on your hands if you decide to try it, then someone you know could use that material. Demographic plays no part in being able to do this, so don’t worry :) Thanks for your comment!
A lady once told me growing up in Germany during the war her and her family learned to crochet with anything since resources weren’t an option. She has made the most beautiful items I have ever seen.
I’m trying this soon. I have tons of bags and that my bf brings home😒 Which I don’t like. I used reusable grocery bags. But this is awesome. Also they do this in Mexico.
What better way to practice-for free. I’m just trying to figure out what the 2 stitches are. The bottom and top are different. Is that single crochet on top? Or do I have to get my books out?🤣
I love this! I need to make some grocery bags. Did you know it takes 70 years for those bags to break down in the land fill? Those bags will last a very long time and when crocheted like that I would think they would be very strong. Thank you for the video.
I've wanted to do this for years to make a rug for my balcony, because it'd be perfect there. It won't mold when it gets wet, it'll dry easily, it's not uncomfortable to step on and there are many pretty colored plastic bags to choose from. Just wish I had the patience for it.
Thank you. In case you haven't seen this video, here is another way of connecting with no knots whatsoever. The result is a consistent firm cord with high tensile strength and no bumps. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zLCAiWBUNg4.html
Anything that helps save our beautiful planet is welcome 👍. People giving thumbs down are welcome to leave this planet. They are burden on this planet.
I love this. I only wish I found this video before they stopped single use plastic bags at all stores around me. I could of put so many bags to good use instead of them going into land fill.
Very cool idea!! For anyone wanting to try this who doesn't have enough bags, I definitely recommend posting on a neighborhood board that you're looking for plastic bags. I posted on Nextdoor and got a bunch from neighbors who had been saving them.
I tried this one time and found it hard on my hands and the plastic bags hard to crochet. But you make it look easy, so I should give it another try especially since I have a lot of plastic bags. Thanks for your inspiration.
Try going up a size on the hook it may make it easier to work. I found that works on those huge chunky yarns they have now. I usually go up one millimeter than they say.
Wow! That's creative thinking of making plastic into a yarn to crochet something useful like bags out of plastic shopping bags. I have lots them, and thinking how to recycle them. Thanks to this video 😍👍👍❤️💜💙🧡🙏🙏👀
A city council in my metro area is voting tomorrow on whether or not to ban plastic bags....I hope to GOD it passes....you would not believe how vehemently against it some idiots are.
I am totally AGAINST banning plastic bags! There is nothing better to protect your books from the rain, or similar. And I am NOT an idiot. Those passing this ban may be.
@@Petra44YT Plastic grocery bags are a huge problem, and there are alternatives (especially made of plastic) for the scenario you described. I own a couple of rain-proof bags, like a backpack and a small, clear purse. Plastic in general isn't what folks are trying to get banned. Single-use plastics are.
