I'm a gay bloke here, but listen its part of nature, I may have exactly not signed up for this but I will watch to know how to better help my patients, it's part of nature dudes get over it
Being a wheelie actually made mine easier to manage! At least if I leak I'm sat on it so you can't really see it, and I can always tuck a tampon or something under my legs if I don't have a pocket haha.
Lol. I don’t even know why I watched this. “Curiosity killed the cat”...they say. Your personality is so magnetic I guess I’ll listen to you talk about anything. That English accent.
I’m glad you did watch it! Having more people (especially men) be informed about periods helps to promote healthy discussions about periods and a less awkward taboo around them. The more people know and understand, the better our societal attitude will be. :D
Mooncups! I've used one for 10 years and would never go back. One great thing is they need emptying less often than you'd change a tampon (I do mine every 12 hours, more on my first heavy day), which is so good when you suffer from fatigue related illnesses and struggle to get to the bathroom. Also you never have to worry about running out of tampons or pads, it's always ready! I have a stash of sterilising tablets in the bathroom and a little cup which I use to clean it at the end of each cycle. It does take a bit if getting used to but honestly, I love it. No worry about any dryness or soreness that can come from the chemicals in tampons and plastic pads too. Plus spend £20 every 5-10 years is a good money saver! I'm on my second on in 10 years and that's only because I left my first one in a pan to boil and forgot about it. That's why I now use the sterilising tablets instead 😂 💙
I used to have really heavy periods, only I didn’t know that it was not normal. The pain used to go on for days, and I didn’t know that that wasn’t normal either. I had a total hysterectomy (for a different reason) and asked to see what was removed, (I had a spinal block instead of a general anaesthetic as I have a family history of the paralysing medication working but the general anaesthetic not - thanks EDS!). I was surprised to see how tiny the Fallopian tubes were, but the ovaries were each about the size of a kiwi fruit, the surgeon said my ovaries were three times the size of ‘normal’ ones but they were covered in cysts. She said they normally cause quite a lot of pain when they get to that size... which I had but I didn’t realise that it wasn’t normal. I would strongly advise women to talk about their periods more and then we would know when things aren’t ‘normal’! I never ran out of tampons or towels as I used a ‘moon cup’ (...or also called a Luna cup), so I just rinsed it under the tap or wiped it with paper and re-inserted it, I had it for more than ten years so it must have saved me hundreds of pounds.
Wheelsnoheels - Gem Hubbard I would definitely recommend using one. It can be a bit ...messy? until you’re used to it, and I completely cut off the ‘stem’ as I found it uncomfortable and then there was no going back. You can boil it to sterilise it, so it needs no chemicals (except H2O!!!), and then periods cost nothing, ...well except some chocolate and paracetamols!!!
Dear Gem, why not talk about periods? It is the absolute normal thing for most women all over this world! Periods in a wheelchair, depending on where the SCI is located can be very tricky sometimes. Well, I had a hysterectomy 8 years ago so this topic is gone. Not that I am happy about having lost my uterus, but the issues were pretty heavy before the surgery. I always used tampons and at night added a pad to make sure nothing leaks on the sheets. My period never really changed after giving birth, which I did twice at very young age of 19 and 22. Thanks for this open video! Interesting topic! I like your style! sincerely Britta
Having EDS makes the whole week before my period a real crappy one I mostly spend in bed watching Netflix in pain so when my period finally comes I’m almost happy. I used to use tampons but now I really like menstrual cups instead! I think it’s the best thing they could have come up with! Now I can even go to the swimming pool and have fysio even if I have my period! Since the cup is hold in place by vacuum it can’t leak ( well if you don’t leave it too long). So try one! Then you’ll always have your cup, you just rinse it and reuse it!
My periods are so heavy and I'm always scared a tampon or cup isn't gonna cut it. Plus, being in my wheelchair all the time I'm actually not sure if a tampon is going to be uncomfortable. I just rely on pads! lol
I swear by a menstrual cup!! Tampons have always hurt and been too uncomfortable for me, so I was dedicated pad user (which wasn't much better) until I made the switch to cups. Game changer! I do still use pads as well, because I usually only have one or two heavy days and am light for another two...but I've switched to cloth pads, because they're a. better for the environment, and b. come in so many pretty colors and patterns :) :) I do carry spare tampons though, just in case a fellow lady is in need of one
I would have loved women to take pills to bring on pregency and not to stop it so we didn’t have to go through this annoying condition every month !- periods have been tough for me since in my 20s - I have them tucked away in many places too- it’s a good topic to talk about well done Jen
Thank you. Yes we need to talk about it. I thought I was the only one who suffers with body pain, but it turns out, that lasts of women suffer with it. Its good to talk so we share tips etc.
Can I ask something? And I am welcome to anyone answering. Do paraplegics feel period pains as theres no sensation? I'm just curious on how it works! Thankyou 🙂
GEMMA. LOVE YA A WHOLE LOTTA!! THANKZ. THIS IS TRUE TO HAVE TAMPONS EVERYWHERE!! EVEN IF YOU THINK NOT, DO ANYWAYS, WE NEVER KNOW. THANKS TIFFANY(YOUR EVERYDAY-ALMOST WATCHER)!!
If you haven't seen a GP about your period symptoms, I would urge that you do. And if the first GP's response is a bit dismissive, see another. There could be some issue, given you have whole body pains and headaches. I am currently investigating the possibility that I have endometriosis, so experience some of those symptoms you talked about. It could be any number of things, but my philosophy is that it is worth investigating.
Have you had you vitamin D levels checked, the pain you described sounds a lot like the pain I had that led to that being tested and being low. High dose vit D was effective very quickly though we haven't quite got my maintenance dose right.
I know I am commenting a year late, but my worst period was that I had loaned my last pad to my friend because my period (I thought) was over. The next day my period started and I knew immediately. It was only a week after the one before! I remember being horrified, but that was when I learned that you can never be too prepared. Also, sounds graphic, but if you ever have sensitivity, sometimes I put some pantry liners in the fridge because it is honestly kind of nice, one might even say “refreshing”. Anyways... love your channel and am binge watching during the chaos of 2020
This is where I branch into "man"splaining I have mosaic klinfelters syndrome, and at one point for about 4 months I had to wear pads because I out of the blue started having periods..... I was not amused and I carry a couple with me now at all times
Finally! Someone else who has a collection of tampons everywhere!! I use all pads& tampons& panty liners and use both in multiple sizes. I have a collection EVERYWHERE (I keep “period kit” that contains everything I’ll need including wet wipes and a generic headache mix bc fun fact: generic headache mix and name brand midol are made of the exact same active ingredients but the “headache mix” is MUCH cheaper!). I have a gift bag of them in my room, I keep them in the bathroom, I have them in multiple purses, in the glove box of every car, in the ones we drive all the time- I have them in the door too. I’m an entertainer& so I have duffles in my back seat at all times& I have them in every one of them too! I’m the person who can whip out a baggie that has 2 sizes of pads, panty liners, almost every size of tampon (including light! Do you know how hard it is to find light tampons in the store? Much less to borrow one from someone?! But unlike most woman- I don’t carry very many super or super plus. It dry’s my woohoo out lol) It’s my crazy obsession.. I grew up SUPER poor- so I hoard things I think I’ll need. &period supplies happen to be one that stuck. Clothes are another. I think it’s bc both were things that were “luxuries” to have in the right size/type- so I make sure to have them in every size and type that I may need.
I agree with a lot of things u said that happen to u when u get your periods my daily pain levels definitely get so much worse when I am just about to get my periods & when I have them
I like compakt pearl and pads. I’m not paralysed I have other genetic conditions etc but growing up on crutches etc I really felt flustered dealing with my period.... now I just always feel flustered (but much better now I’m in my new chair) my moods go absolutely wakadoodle and play havoc with my mood disorder 😅 (sorry boyfriend) I also make sure to bulk buy all my favourite pads etc online and stash them everywhere too I always have to use night pads and tampons at the same time or I’d just opt for whatever took my mood but I’m not that blessed 🤦🏻♀️
I bet you have still discovered you used the one you thought you had saved and not replaced. Still your planning as much as you can ,the migraine problem is bad enough by its self from what others have told me .
I found menstral cups and threw out tampons. Before then it was a horrible challenge as pads would come off when I pulled up my panties (I think Brits say "pants) and tampons would not stay in properly. That combined with really heavy periods made it difficult. I spent a lot of the years on the pill and never had a period. I discovered two years ago that I have fibroids. Now that I'm 55 my doc wanted me to go off the pill to see if my periods stopped, 6 weeks later the heavy periods started and they last for days and come back after only a couple of days. I'm currently working with a gyno to find a solution. I hope I won't need a hysterectomy. I like the brand called the Diva Cup and it works just fine, but I have to put it in and remove it from bed. Arthritis in my shoulders keeps me from being able to reach my private parts. Fun stuff huh!
But then there's the moments you ask around and NO ONE has any pads or tampons or anything! And you're just all, "whelp, guess I'm stuffing a wadge of tissue in my knickers for the time being then!" XS
I have the more serve Spina Bifida so I can't really feel down there so i dont really get period pain like most but when i have mine it feels like when you need to take a poop
I personally prefer the Modibodi undies. They have them for both period and incontinence, and that’s a constant issue for me, so it means I don’t even need to change my routine or use anything different if I get my period. They’re also adaptive, with Velcro at the side. For those who have a lighter flow/only have to worry about smaller to medium bladder leaks, they’ve also got the medium that has plastic clips at the sides. I haven’t even seen adaptive continence undies from disability specific shops, but Modibodi has them. They also have disabled models, and models of all sizes, and they make sure their adaptive line is the same price as the rest of it. And they also have swimwear. So, Modibodi all the way. I’ve never gotten along with disposable pads- I think my skin is just really sensitive, and it really doesn’t like them. I’m also not a fan of tampons, as I can’t put them in myself, plus they’re awful for the environment. Period and continence undies (and especially adaptive ones) are the best invention ever.
I had a hysterectomy 12 weeks ago. Not having a period is THE BEST!!! Endometriosis and adenomyosis destroyed every aspect of my life. I couldn’t walk because of the pain. Good riddance! 👋
In some ways it feels like I’ve never had a period in my life because this is how my body should have felt all along and the other part of me is freaked out that the thing that tortured me for half my life is really gone and never coming back.
I had a total abdominal hysterectomy 3 years ago at the age of 40. It took best part of a year to fully recover but life is absolutely awesome after that. It’s a very major operation as you obviously know so do go easy for many, many months. I still experienced some pain in the first year but not anymore. Do take care and plan all the things you can look forward to once fully recovered. I promise you that your future will be wonderful! 💐
I use charcoal bamboo reusable cloth pads and absorbent panties called bambodies from amazon. Game changer. I have sensory issues as well as being a wheelchair user, and a heavy flow girl. The combination has never let me down so far! Thank you for talking about this, I think it is so important to normalize menstruation. Women have been bleeding for hundreds of thousands of years. It shouldn't be taboo by now!! Let's fix it for our daughters
If I'm not feeling well and I see I'm low, I sometimes will order them online and have them delivered. They usually arrive within two days, so it's not a huge wait which is nice.
I had Purchased, I don’t know what the company was but they’re like tampons that are better for me for you. Anyway I was moving home from college in like two weeks so it might’ve been able to come to my dorm but like there’s a chance that I wasn’t gonna be there and I’ll be back home so I just sent it to my home I was like guys don’t open, you don’t wanna know what’s in it and my dad opened it. Call me and was like what the fuck are these and I was like tampons. And I hear my brother go “oh my God I touched one that’s so gross”
You shouldn't have to lower yourself to appease men. I mean, when guys talk about the big DUMP they took in the toilet last night or how they have pus coming out of their d**ks they never pause to consider us, they just freely talk about it. You should show women true support by just talking about it. Don't degrade it as though it's something we should be ashamed of. It's hard enough trying to find any videos about periods let alone disability periods. Thank you for talking about this topic, but it's still upsetting seeing that it's just laced with the stigma we females have to deal with everywhere in our lives even though everyone knows periods exist.
I don’t know what was going on with the captions. I love that people put captions but I had to go back to the RU-vid generated ones because they were like overlapping and weird. Great video though!!!
I have horrible periods as well. I have tampons everywhere too. I stock up and get them in the mail lol. I also have emergency period kits, with tampons, wipes, portable heating pads, muscle relaxers, and pain killers. And because I get migraines as well on my period for sure and sometimes during the month, I have emergency migraine kits everywhere too. Which include migraine medication, nausea meds and ginger candy, pain killers just in case, ice packs, sunglasses, and a scarf or ace bandage to wrap my ice pack around my head if I can't lay down. I keep both kits in my cars bedroom, all my bathrooms and I used to keep them at work when I was able to still work.
I love watching your videos they are very helpful but I was curious if you have trouble with Urinary tract infections from using the catheter if so how do you prevent them?
