Very important things that people never realize until they are there. I was out in a manual chair for the first time in a store and became fatigued. My inexperience with control along with exhaustion caused me to fracture a finger in the spokes. Definitely practice before going somewhere you will need more control!

It's nice to see that inclines are hard for everyone. As a curvy wheelchair user, I'm a tad self conscious.

Another tipp for going up a hill : If there is enough space you can go zick-zack up the hill. Or try pulling instead of pushing (so you are turning backwards to the hill). I don't know why but sometimes I find it easier to pull up a hill than pushing it up.

Thank you for doing this one!! :) I'm new at using a wheelchair, and I found it essential to have biking gloves. Mine have little grippies on the palm, which makes going down a hill easier. I am losing the feeling in my hands, so I am learning with gloves to prevent burns/blisters.

@2:50 gripping the tires as well, great advice as it is also easier on the wrists as well (but you’ll get the dirty hands and if you have long sleeves best to push or roll them up).

Popping a wheelie is one of the hardest things for me I still don't get it and I've been using a wheelchair for over 2 years but also my wheelchair wasn't fitted to my size because I got mine through State Insurance in the United States which was a headache and a half anyway so some of the things are a little bit more difficult for me
@punky19761
@punky19761 6 лет назад
Dawn Keith doing wheelies might be dangerous for you since it sounds like your wheelchair doesn’t fit you right. I learned balance for a wheelie with a couch behind me. Also being in a ditch with a hill in front and in back of me helped learn balance.

Lisa TheCatDude I got the wheelchair because I have ehlers-danlos syndrome and my rheumatologist thought it would be safer for me because I faint a lot and I get hurt a lot since I've had the wheelchair thankfully I have to have no concussions and I haven't gotten as many bruises as I have before I'm still waiting for a home nurse to come in to have them help me learn wheelchair skills having State Insurance to not do much for me at all but it's the only thing I have

Wheelies are vey easy with a bit of practice. That being said they are not easy if your chair is not set up exactly perfect for you. Some chairs are not meant to wheelie. Also depending on your disability a wheelie may be impossible and dangerous. Work with a PT to determine what you and your chair are capable of. Happy wheeling!

Gotta love attempting to break concrete with the back of your head during a wheelie😂 I haven’t attempted going up curbs yet, our curbs are alittle taller. Going down curds is easy but a good way to mess you back up if you do it wrong. Wheelies have to be the best thing to do in a chair tbh, I do it to fuel my ADHD. Will you be including in the next video if there is one, going up and down more aggressive inclines and declines? Just a thought. Great video🤙🏼👍🏼

Thank you for this! I think it’s one of the more encouraging videos I’ve seen and you showed tips I hadn’t really heard before. I’ve been a part time user for 3 years and have been wanting to learn do to higher doorways like you showed because I hate getting out of my chair to get in and out of places. I definitely don’t trust myself to not have the wheelie bars off though so that’s something I have to practice first. And I’m pretty sure I’ve not been pushing effectively either so I’m excited to see the difference next time I’m out.

Change your center of gravity by moving your axles forward! It will make your chair tippier and its soooo much easier to do a wheelie. I can hold a wheelie indefinitely, rotate 360, propel forward, and roll down hills in a wheelie. Wheelie skills are so important. I find it easier to get across thick carpet, grass, and rocks/gravel if I propel myself in a wheelie. On another note, I was looking at different wheelchair brands for a bit of a project and found your chair: Motion Composites Veloce. You have a REALLY nice chair. Carbon fiber is so expensive though. Did you pay for it yourself?

Now l 've empowered my wheelchair the person who brought it to me said: "You can't use it like the manual! You can't climba curv any more!" I was so sad and cried but needed my M 25 - wheels! It still is my wheelchair but power assisted wheels. So l trained and put a high loaded rucksack at the back. I found out that helped me to have the power to pust it up. So l needed for my soul that l could pust my casters high for a curb and: last not least it was a few days bevore l could master a tiny curb!!! Tadaa! If a tiny l'll now learn a bigger …and bigger…and a high one! I started with a belt lying on the ground at home in my living room.This is why l don't want a normal power chair: l can't train same way. Now l l trained a lot and l noticed the man who brought my wheelz didn't know it better! I invited him and now he knows that one can more than he thought and we will meet from t?me to time. To have anything doesn't meean you never can do things again and it doesn't mean you never will master things again! It depends on your try, your insult, your power and your strength. Try and don't give up. I only try that tomorrow l will be able what today l can't. Future will tell me and you how far it goes! But allways up, never down!

Do you have any issues with your wheels skidding on steep slopes? I think my issue is because I have solid tyres or the tread's not good enough but I don't know if it's just a thing everyone has.

Great video! Always be careful going down hills because you could catch a small bump which could start a small spasm which in turn may cause your leg to stretch out in front of you. If you don't slow down to catch it in time the spasm may go dead and your foot will plant and cause you to flip forward out if your chair. Lol I know this from experience. I'm not opposed to pushing with my hands on my tires. However, if you use caths you definitely need to carry some sani wipes of some type. Wheelies are the best friend to your mobility and make some of the impossible possible. If any of you want to feel like a fish out of water then you should try but not but Row Wheels. For fun once I (shouldn't have) wasted the sales persons time to try these things out. Lats just say that I should've video that experience. You all would fall from your wheelchairs with laughter.

@@Wheelsnoheels not by OT but they checked in the mobility shop. I wasn't measured. They were happy with most of the things. They had adjust the height of the footplates as my knees were not in line with my hips (think that's what they said, they had to power the footplates a little) also I needed I wider chair than the standard due to my big butt lol. So I think they made sure it was as best fit as possible given the circumstances and they I sister I move around the showroom to make sure I had the right movement when propelling.

@@Wheelsnoheels also this is for occasional use as when I can, I will use my mobility scooter. It's being used for days when I go to my disabled swim club, when my scooter has broken down (it's ancient and I'm saving for a new one, but it has to fold due to my tiny flat and having nowhere safe to store a full size) and when I stay with my friend in Cornwall as neither of us have the strength to get the scooter in her car due to both of our back and hip issues and my knees. I can't walk far without hitting huge issues. (It can take me up to 90 mins to walk with my sticks a distance that takes a normal person 10 mins to walk by which time my hands are blistered, bleeding and sore feom the crutches. After yesterday, I'm stuck in bed hardly able to move today.

Awww thank you for watching, Im glad you enjoy my vids. You can search for "paraplegic transfer in and out of car." and videos will pop up that will show you how people who can't walk at all get their chairs in and out, or I know some people who use sticks to walk to the back of the car to get their chair out. There are also roof boxes (which I really want) that the wheelchair goes in. An electric arm comes and grabs the chair, and takes it up and down from the box. Pretty cool!!! xx

There are multiple vehicle set ups for wheelchair users. I can’t get a wheelchair out of a car, I’m also not tall enough to see everything I need to see when driving a car, so I drive a van with a lift, hand controls and a seat that goes up and down and swivels around so I can get out of the drivers seat. Other wheelchair users have “toppers” where I think the wheelchair attaches to a lift somehow and the wheelchair is lifted into an enclosure on top of the car.

Can't do wheelies as my legs have been permanently straight since I was six years old, due to a post-operative mistake. I can only briefly hop up kerbs. I go down them backwards. Pushing with tyres is really inefficient. It also causes unnecessary wear and tear.
