⚓️Why is Anderson puffing out Black Smoke? Arthur M Anderson departs Duluth, MN

The 767-foot ship Arthur M. Anderson departed under the Aerial Lift Bridge onto Lake Superior in Duluth, MN. During the ship's departure, a huge cloud of black smoke came out of the stack for about 7 seconds. Maybe something was going on in the engine room? It stood out to me, especially after there was no black smoke before or after those few big puffs.

To address the black smoke from the Anderson. She has oil fired steam turbine. The speed through Duluth harbor is around 3 knots. As the Captain makes the last cut to align the Anderson with the Duluth Canal channel, the Captain needs to increase his power so the rudder can turn the boat through the last turn to set up this alignment to the canal. The black smoke is the Chief engineer responding in kind with that the increase speed request from the pilot house. You will notice after the first black smoke appears, the stack plum settles down and only heat waves are coming from the stack. Common sight on Oil fed boilers.

When you think of the courage that ship had to turn back from the safety of Whitefish Bay to head back into the furious storm on Lake Superior to look for the the Edmund Fitzgerald after she disappeared, is to me one of the hardest decisions any Captain would have to make…… Hats of to the Anderson, and to the Captain as they put themselves in peril that night to help a friend……

Susan; Thank you for the kind words, I appreciate that. I think of the Captain of the Anderson who heard the words”We are holding our own” which were the last words from the Fitzgerald. From what I remember the Anderson could still barely see the Fitzgerald’s lights. They very well may have come close to going right over the spot where she went down being the Fitz was ahead of them. Evidently the Coast Guard ship closest to the wreck was in Duluth undergoing some repairs, so they were not able to get anything out there for hours. The Anderson was the closest ship, and did the best they could given the conditions, and as we all know it was already too late. GOD SPEED ANDERSON, YOU ARE THE BRAVEST OF THE BRAVE!!!!!!!

Never gets old watching the Anderson. Anyone want to go down a rabbit hole? Do some research on the American Ship Building Company ...Lorain, Ohio yard. Many famous ships were built there. Five of the 13 1,000 ft ore carriers on the Great Lakes were built in Lorain, including the M/V Paul R. Tregurtha. And the Anderson, the Roger Blough, and the SS Milwaukee Clipper. The Lorain shipyard closed in 1983. The area is now a place to party and eat!

Over the years I worked on four ships that were built in Lorain. If I recall correctly, the yard closure was announced the day after Thanksgiving in 1983. Not much going on in Lorain anymore. Shipyard is closed, Ford assembly plant is closed and it doesn't look as if the pipe mill will ever reopen. I also have an old girlfriend who lives in Lorain, but that's another story.

Having grown up in northeastern Wisconsin I remember clear and clean air most all the time. That smoke and haze is not good now after living in Southern California for over 40 years. In Southern California we have had only a few days of smoke and haze. We have had terrible fires up in northern California in the recent past years. Our northern California forest have had huge summer fires. It is bad smelling and breathing smoke. I can remember the worse when our eyes were irritated by the smoke. I can only imagine what it was doing to my / our lungs? Living in smoke and that haze is very bad for many days or weeks. Wow, the Anderson is nearly 72 years old. That is very old for a great lakes bulk carrier. I am sure the operators of the Anderson know how economically efficient it is continue to operate that ship? Good to see the Anderson still on the great lakes.

Maybe they were sanding the flues in the boiler. They do that from time to time on steam locomotives. Fine granule sand is introduced into the firebox and the draft carries it through the flues scouring the excess soot from them. Another possibility is that the Captain called for Full Speed Ahead on the Engineroom Telegraph which would cause more draft through the firebox and the boiler without adding any sand. I think it was the latter. Keep those great videos coming.

A great ship. As in the old days they used to say on the Railroad and the shipping industry there pouring the coal to it. Now it is oil fired they still need heat to get steam. That is a signal of bringing PROUDUCTS to the mills to keep this country moving forward. Some people want to stop American progress. As son of a Transportation family. Let the smoke roll

Why do some ship's have the pilot house at the bow and some at the stern? Can someone help with this question.
@vibewithmike

Robert, I found this online. I hope this helps. “There are numerous ship configurations in which the wheelhouse / navigation bridge (both are more acceptable terms than the somewhat archaic “pilot house”) is mounted forward rather than aft. Historically, ships were steered from the stern since that provided the closest access to the tiller/rudder. The earliest “pilot houses” were basically just rough shelters erected to protect the helmsman and navigator from the elements, and were typically placed aft on early smaller ships to maintain this proximity to the steering gear. With the advent of hydraulic/electronic steering, this limitation was largely eliminated. Subsequently, the major design criteria for placement of the wheelhouse have been cargo optimization and visibility. Machinery spaces in early (finely-built) steamships and motor ships were typically placed amidships with the bridge above and cargo spaces forward and aft (“three-island” configuration), but this was inefficient use of space as extended propeller shafts took away from cargo capacity.”

Is there a difference between one long and two shorts, and THREE longs and two shorts?
@vibewithmike
@vibewithmike Год назад
John! I’m glad you asked this! There have been a few questions about the boat and bridge signal horns when the boats are entering and leaving the Port of Duluth. In most cases, once radio communication with the bridge has been established, use of the boat and bridge sound signals are not necessary and operation of the sound signals is left up to the captains. Often, boats will not use the loud horns after dark as a courtesy to city residents. So, most often when you hear the customary whistle/horn-blowing sequence of "long-short-short" it is a friendly salute to the Port of Duluth from the ship captain and is responded to by the lift bridge operator with the same sequence. The Master Salute is an upgraded more formal whistle/horn salute. That is “long-long-long-short-short.” While the famous sound may be a courtesy, it has long been part of the nautical tradition of this great inland sea port.

Must have had ballast water as she definitely went to Two Harbors for ore. I confirmed they did, in fact, load ore there. They delivered it to Gary. Confirmed that too.
