A view of the Scottish country taken from across Scotland.
Accompanied by the music of The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards.
Piobaireachd.....Lament for Kinlochmoidart.
I hope you enjoy viewing !
Piobaireachd ("pee-brock") is the classical music of the great highland bagpipe. It is less commonly referred to as Ceol Mor, meaning Great Music. It is an entirely different from the category of music known as Ceol Beag (or Little Music) that includes marches, slow airs, and the various idioms of dance music (jigs, reels, strathspeys, and hornpipes).
Piobaireachd tunes are often several hundred years old, dating as far back as the 1400's. It is distinct from the other forms of Celtic music in that it is only traditionally played by a solo piper on the great highland bagpipe.
Many pipers consider Piobaireachd to be the highest form of bagpipe music and also most satisfying and challenging to play. The world's most prestigious piping competitions, such as the Gold Medals at Inverness and Oban, are won by pipers who compete by playing Piobaireachd tunes.

My maternal grandparents were from Scotland. I loved them dearly and miss them so much. Every time I hear the pipes I get emotional.

Yeah Im born here in Canada. though I got some family in the old country and learned to play pipes. Scotland is all I think about and long for a trip to see it. Though Canadian highlands are also so beautiful and amazing! This tune brings it all to !

Kinlochmoidart's Lament is one of the most musically accessible piobaireachds to modern ears. Much of the piobaireachd repertoir is, to say the least, an aquired taste, and some tunes I still don't understand after 40 years of listening to and playing the music. This, however, I think could be give pleasure to someone who is hearing piobaireachd for the first time.

Insightful - never thought of it that way. I was hardly a child, but I have listened to piobaireachd sets since I was a teenager - must have been young enough for the ears to accept the sound without noticing.

This lament was composed in memory of Donald MacDonald of Kinlochmoidart who was executed at Carlisle in 1746 for his share in the Jacobite Rebellion. Donald joined Prince Charles Edward Stuart, who visited him in his house at Kinloch-Moidart, and, at the head of a faithful band of a hundred of his retainers, accompanied the Prince throughout the whole campaign

Aye, tis a shameful thing, to lose a loyal friend. MacDonald, clan of loyalty and bravery, dear to my family you shall always be. My surname may be English, but my heritage includes the house of Stuart. I was not alive for the Jacobite rebellion. But I know that I speak for Prince Charlie, when I say that each MacDonald who fell, lent shockwaves to the earth where The Bonnie Prince stood. Fair certain, every single Scotsman who died as a result, was felt with each breath he took. His drinking and carousing were testament, aye... but he never lent sight of the pain to others. This lament was never really enough to express his grief. If you're interested in what kills a king, the answer is watching your loyal friends and brothers in battle die, for no gain. Maybe someday the clan of Stuart can live up to the expectations of our kin. I know that I try, but I am too distant in relation to garner support to claim the throne, and I am an American born. Still, one might hope that a distant cousin will stand up and do it right in honor of the brave ones that went before.

@@Rusty170027 No. I'm actually of the Stuart line. I don't watch game of thrones. I'm a Patriot and have too much to do in my life, to sit and watch some CBS tv show.

@@Rusty170027 as I can see, you are educated enough to know that people do still talk like this, when they are being genuine and heartfelt. Also, I am educated enough to know you are attempting to troll me. Well done! A round of applause for our lonely and sexually frustrated friend, folks! He has fought valiantly, and shall retire in his shame. Yes, I'm an American. I do not hold to stereotype, but heritage. Long live the Bonnie Scots! And dash to the insolent! By Hammer! You do not hold me, sir! And I shall comport myself as I always have- a man of small means and high character.

I remember one of the most impressive intros to a TV programme was its opening by a soulful lament played to the panning of a ruined castle in silhouette. It lasted about 3 minutes with no interruption. At its end the first scene was something totally ridiculous. The programme? An episode of the comedy The Avengers. An inspired mixing of the sublime with the ridiculous and entirely memorable.

This appears to be version #1 but he skips the dithis singling and skips both taurluath variations completely and goes straight to the crunluath singling. Result is a still very pleasing condensed version. I imagine the full version runs about 12 or 13 minutes long.

Just amazing. I never felt like trying Piobaireachd until I heard this... Just out of curiosity; shouldn't there be one more variation (I'm not sure about the name - for sure it contains crunluath and something else :-) ) after the urlar at the end is played?
@em.142
@em.142 4 года назад
Nothing is played after the reprise of the Urlar, ever. You may be thinking of the Crunluath a Mach, which can be played after the Crunluath/Doubling and before the reprise. However, this tune has a “breabach” style Crunluath which cannot be played with an a Mach. This recording skips the singling of the first variation, as well as the singling and doubling of both the Taorluath and the Tripling. So this recording has: 1. Urlar, 2. Doubling of 1st variation, 3. Crunluath singling 4. Crunluath doubling, 5. Return to Urlar.
