I have a 1978 Topps Sparky Lyle Record Breaker in NM. That's one of my favorite '78 cards! Don't have many from that set, but appreciate them, and hope to add quite a few eventually? Especially the iconic Pete Rose card!
i was just a 7 year old kid starting to get into the game, well really 1976 and football at the time. i have every raiders topps team set from 1976-2015 still in a album.
Love this series! Great info and trivia, about an awesome set!I completely agree about loving the minimalistic design, and the All Star logos here! This set is the oldest complete wax box I’ve opened, and I also opened a couple of vending boxes (all back about 10 years ago). Although I haven’t graded all of the candidates, nothing too crazy yet, the highlights are a Psa 8 Molly and PSA 7 Murray. Thanks so much, David, enjoyed it!
Ha, maybe a few, when I wore a younger man’s clothes! Now with this shopoholic lady (she won’t see this, right?) and a couple rugrats, I couldn’t afford the 10 year old price of that box!

Great stuff David! This set has grown significantly on me the last half year or so. I think Paul Molitor should be celebrated more, what a great hitter! Glad you covered it! In 1979 Burger King issued identical sets to Topps but only for the Yankees and Phillies, then they didn't make playoffs in October, lol. Didn't know about the same 4 teams for 2 straight post-seasons. Hey, got your trivia correct!!! I knew there was a huge gap before Thurman so it was kinda a guess, lol. I've got the Murray in a 5, the Winfield in an 8 and have a sweet looking Whitaker ungraded.

Right!?! I’ve been trying to think of another middle infield that was as good and came up at the same time like them. There was like a 3-year difference between Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley. You’re the historian - can you name a duo?
@David Gonos Sports Cards quick answer? No, there's not a better one in history that started and played most of their careers together. Longer answer? The only ones that come close were Davey Johnson and Mark Belanger with the 1960s Orioles, but they were great at defense and almost nothing on offense. Joe Tinker and Johnny Evers would be the second best though. Both started in 1902 with the Cubs, both are Hall of Famers, but I think Sweet Lou and Tram were a better duo.
The Eddie Murray in 10 condition has sold for 20k and Brett for 8k while the Molitor lags far behind. However in 8 beats them all. Those quad cards get killed unfairly imo. And I'm a huge Molitor fan
Yeah, the idea of them was cool, but it just muddled the product a little. Like, let’s dump 15 middle relievers and utility players from the 780-card checklist, so we can have some more true solo rookie cards. They do get a bum wrap tho, and they stand out as different, which is cool.
The Edie Murray and the Molitor- Trammel are the two best cards in the 78’ set. The Yankees team card and some of the record breakers #1-7 are tough to get in collectors grade.
