The divided line problem you present isn't complete. You can choose any random fraction by which to divide the line. You could end up with 2, 1, 1, 1/2 or 3, 1, 1, 1/3 for example. So, you do not always get phi. Please explain if I've missed something but, while It is true that any line divided into sections 1, 1, 1/phi, and phi is a line divided into two uneven sections that are each divided unevenly in turn, It is false that any line divided into two uneven sections, each divided into two uneven sections in turn will have this proportionality. Here is a visualization: ________|_|__|_____ clearly no two sections of that line are equal, therefore it cannot be that these divisions can be described as 1, 1, 1/phi, and phi. I am open to the possibility that there is a proof that any line divided in this manner will result in *some* description of phi, for example the line in this post may well be divided into 1, 1/phi, phi, and ((1/phi)-1), but it is clearly not 1, 1, 1/phi, phi.

4:22 I keep trying the line subdivision experiment and it is not working for me. I divided a 10" line unequally so one segment is 6" and the other segment is 4". Then I divided 1 segment unevenly again so now 1 segment is 6" and another segment is 3" and another segment is 1" long. Then I divided the 6" segment unevenly so the final segment lengths of the original line is 2, 4, 3, 1. Did I do something wrong? How is that supposed to equate to phi,1,1, and phi/1?
