i think there is an option in the AC that is made for removing moisture, so try it out for few nights when you have ALL the openings closed in the boat. and remember to cast the condensation pipedrainthingazig outside the railing, so it drains to the ground. oh!!! and! while doing the oh glorious sanding, remember to power the unit and cover the inside unit, otherwise the glass dust mixed with moisture WILL glog up the AC. best wishes from the north
Mads - Be sure to clean the air filter(s) on the indoor unit of your mini-split weekly especially if your are doing any cleaning or repairs inside! I would also pick up a heavy duty HEPA class air filter as the filter on the mini-split is not fine enough to pull out all the particulates!
5:25 "Remember how you watched sail life for Mads precision and accuracy, well, that is now going out the window now that I'm in town". Hilarious, thank you, right on target hit the funny bone.
During summer you are probably going to want a big shade tarp suspended above the boat, direct sunlight on the boat surface will be a killer of anything cool.
Hi Ava and Mads, could you make your videos a little bit longer at least for the restoration phase? 18 minutes look so short for a whole week of waiting? It's okay for the Sunday evenings...
I agree. Seems like it’s been ages waiting on the work to begin. I think he’s just stretching it out to make more videos but it’s starting to get old. I hope it starts soon 🙏👍
4:40 FIND A LOCAL CABINET MAKER!!! They will have access to cabinet grade plywood that is better the box stores. They will will also have offcuts they want to get rid of.
I put a couple of the mini splits in they work great, you will need to keep a watch on the inside filter. It will quickly get clogged from all the future glorious sanding significantly reducing the cooling capability.
We had ac in Thailand which was fitted for us the compressor was fitted outside exposed to 39 degree's of temperature never any problems your getting on nicely 😊😊
Watch out when you do epoxy lamination with the Mini split on, it will recirculate and concentrate VOC vapors inside the boat. If you have any Bleeder for vacuum bagging, cover the Mini split air return with it during your O'glorious sanding sessions. ( keep the machine's own filter from clogging). With that much tubing how come you didn't install the head unit in the dry and shade under the boat?
It was good to say hello to you both at the Selden booth at the boat show. Admire your work, big project, and I am looking forward to seeing how this develops. As I refit my 79 Swan 441, I look at what you have done for some help/ideas and real world tests of equipment. I put a E40i on our coahroof based on your build. Again thanks for all that you do.
Another way of making temporary plywood "waterproof" is to saturate it with Titebond III, wood glue. Then paint over it. I am going to give it try on a "little library" in my front yard. I have had two boxes made from "outdoor" plywood delaminate. Keep the vacuum pump and refrigeration gages for future cruising. AC/Refrigeration repair is always a skill in short supply!
You can also use the glue you’re talking about with burlap. It makes it like fiberglass and very strong. I’ve seen it done and it looks pretty good. Just make sure to cover all the burlap in glue. 👍🙏
Since this channel is known for following phrases "Oh glorious sanding" and "man-glitter". I would consider adding extra DIY air filter for the mini split intake.
A touch tongue in cheek i think you might find.. 😂 😉🧙🏻♂️ pumping out the bilge waters going to be more effective than just waiting for it to dry out..
There is a dense polystyrene sheet product sold by roofing suppliers known as coverboard. Available in a range of thicknesses and dimensions, but typically 4x8 feet. This a great multipurpose product for substrate applications. Check it out.
There would have been a regional rush on plywood from people boarding up their windows for the hurricane(s). Right now, same for repairing damaged homes. The local stores and lumber yards are probably forced to restock with whatever stock is left at the end of the season back up in Canada. It should get better over time.
Mads, even a low price Ozone generator will do miracles inside your boat once all the water is gone. It kills fungi, mould and bacteria and means you will get a "fresh" start.
So have there been a decision made on the “tent or cover” yet? I’m sure someone has already suggested it, but I’ve been amazed by the amount of wind the cover that @LifeOnTheHulls has been using for an extended amount of time. Last episode they had 120km/h winds. Is that right? That hurricane force winds. Maybe something like that would work.
I think he was saying that for the price of good plywood you only get the shitty one at the box stores. Good plywood at HD or Lowes might as well come Gold Plated.
I'm pretty sure that Home Despot will sell you better lumber if you special order it. It's expensive and will take a couple of weeks but they will deliver it to the store where you can pick it up. There is a nice lumber place in Vero Beach which is a bit of a drive for you but there has to be other good lumberyards near to Port Canaveral. It's too bad that the Home Despots and Lows big-box stores have driven most of the good independent lumber yards out of business with their junque lumber products.
I share your disdain for the plywood options at the US's big box stores. I had a specialty plywood store near my house and it was awesome what I could buy. I usually had about three choices for whatever project I was buying for. It was owned and staffed by an extremely knowledgeable team that felt like fellow shop mates. Unfortunately, the owner decided to retire and close the business. It was a VERY sad day. I am still trying to find sources for some of my regular purchases.
My father was a cabinet maker. I helped him build them when II was growing up. You are absolutely correct about the quality of plywood and wood in general. He used to say that our best high quality lumber was all shipped overseas and we got the seconds.
Shopping at a second rate discount store you get second rate product . There are other stores and lumber yards you can get better products. Did they supply enough copper tubing to place the pump on a table on the ground out of the direct sun??
Since you’re such a good sport, Mads, you’ll forgive this far too late suggestion. Instead of shitty plywood, Lowe’s and HD sell fairly cheap plexi and polycarbonate which could have repaired the leaking hatches and still let light in. 😂
I did consider that, but I wanted something that wouldn't break if someone accidentally stepped on it, and plexi/poly got expensive real quick in that thickness :)
I have found that many Hardwood stores sometimes offer good plywood...at marine ply prices. Some easily exceeds $200/sheet. Sometimes it is even rated for marine use. I am sure you know this yet I thought I would toss it out there for others who like myself are disgusted with the shitty plywood commonly available at the big stores.
good call on the mini split. window rattlers only cool the air while mini splits cool the air AND remove moisture. was there not enough length in the line-set to put the condenser under the hull of the boat? that should put the it out of the sun for at least half of the day, they are more efficient when not in direct sunlight
It looks like the plywood you are getting is sheathing for house building not furniture grade ply. yes it's shitty! As stated below look to lumber yards or online suppliers.
