I watch far too many sailing channels which either are in the Med or crossing over to the Caribbean or from the states to the Caribbean and to be honest it’s getting boring watching the same old places just different faces, so what a fantastic breath of fresh air YOUR CHANNEL IS. This is proper sailing with proper sailors.
That penguin riding that huge wave onto the rock was one of the coolest things I've ever seen any animal do. It was so graceful considering the circumstance. So good at reading the water.
My wife and I were thrilled to be able to visit South Georgia last February including St. Andrews Bay and Prion Island. When we past Shag Rocks we were treated to a sighting of 2 Blue Whales. I we were glad to be aboard a 100 meter ship. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.
Hello! It was a great surprise to read that someone has ventured this way and so recently too! We were in SG in Feb so perhaps we were there around the same time! We heard that there had been a sighting of blue whales and couldn’t believe it! Ted Cheeseman onboard was really hoping we would see them! But they evaded us! However we will be editing short films on individual specific animals ie gentoo penguins/ king penguins/ wandering albatross etc for the Animal Lovers on here! You two are doing precisely the sort of cruising that I would love to do if my age and health permitted. Sadly that is not the case but I can certainly enjoy your experiences vicariously through yt. I really enjoyed the albatross ballet and would love to see any more if you have it! I remember David Attenborough also filmed the beautiful ritual some years ago but I can't remember where now except that it was on one of the Southern Ocean islands. I'm getting bored with the vacuous and seemingly endless supply of accounts of bumming around in the Caribbean without any sign of a purpose other than self-indulgence! But you two are actually facilitating important scientific research and that's both worthwhile and fascinating at the same time. Well done and keep on doing your good work!
Hi David, I hope this reply reaches you (I’m not sure how to tag people in replies?). Thank you for your kind comment. Yes we do have a lot more of the albatross footage- we just didn’t want to overload it on this film. However! We are putting together short films on the specific animals we observed for the wildlife lovers :)) and the great thing about the albatross dancing was the incredible noise they made too! We have recordings of that :)) We hope to have those films out in the next couple of months. The film that is being edited at the moment is our voyage to Gough Island, where we took a team of scientists and conservationists as they embark on a year long programme to eradicated the house mice that have been decimating the albatross population (eating them alive). It was a really important journey- and incredibly we were granted permission to land there and see the albatross nesting! I'm not so interested in the stereotypical image of the yachtie just bumming around the Caribbean totally self-absorbed in pleasure seeking activities. If I had a live-aboard boat (if only!) I would definitely want to offer it for the kind of work that you're doing! How rewarding to do conservation and research work and esp. with those kind of people! I look forward to the next video about the albatross and getting rid of the mice!

Don’t keep it short!! I want to see more!” Although I know how much time editing films takes, please let us take part more in the daily life on board. Your sailing skills must be tremendous, letting us take part would not be considered bragging. Is this a Bestevaer you’re sailing? How could you afford such a boat at your age? How does the interior look (loved your excursion to the “fridge”). How much time do you spend on maintenance? How much condensation water does the temperature gap produce? So many questions...
Hello CK! Thank you for your very kind comment! We don’t own Pelagic Australis - that would be a dream if we did! We are employed as Skipper & Mate onboard. Skip Novak is the owner and our boss :)) She is a Tony Castro design and built in 2003 in Durban. Glad to hear you liked seeing the fridge! Initially we were not intending on making films and I only videoed to send footage back to my parents. But after my Dad edited the South Georgia film and we got such positive feedback we decided to produce some more from my slightly dodgy filming. With that in mind- most of my footage was of penguins and icebergs. Since the interest in the films we decided to document more on the sailing side of it too and hope that we can feature that more in future films:)) I hope that all makes sense! We are employed by Skip as Skipper & Mate. Pelagic is not our boat but we have been working for Skip for about 20 months. I visited The Falklands/Antarctica/South Georgia on HMS Endurance between 2001 and 2003. What a privilege and I'm eternally grateful I had the opportunity. Great memories.

To respond to your comment about humanity helping the Albatross… do watch our 2 Gough Island films - where we sail a team of scientists to the remote island as they set out on a well orchestrated quest to save the albatross & other indigenous seabirds… their work is remarkable- I think you will greatly appreciate it:)) And we got some beautiful footage of the Albatross in Part 2:) Thanks again for your comment. 5:45 "Are you really glad you said 'yes'?" Understatement of the century. How fast would I say "yes" if asked the question?...that short a time measurement doesn't exist. How does one make that happen? On the video content, the scenes from South Georgia were beyond breath-taking.

What a terrific way to continue from Part One! The sailing, scenery and wildlife footages were just incredible. I thought the calmness and tranquillity of Larsen Harbour was an amazing contrast to the breathtaking ocean passages, and yet Pelagic Australis seemed totally at home there. For me, the episode was all the more interesting because of the glimpses it offered of everyday life on board, above and below decks. Watching this (in the UK) has been utterly memorable. I really loved it and know I'll come back to it time and time again. A really professional job. Thanks so much!

Sunday morning expedition lessons with Sophie and Chris, I love it! Making these areas of fierce winds and difficult nature your "home", showing all of it's beauty, that could not be seen in it’s intimacy elsewhere, is so outstanding! Your footage has greatly improved!! Congratulations!! Well Sophie it is good to wear a hat in the forward section, knowing that approx. 80% of the body heat, leaves via the head, which led to the old hunter’s rule: If you got cold feet, "put a hat on." Your films are so informative folks, thanks. Sophie describing the penguins as "tiny but mighty creatures" had me thinking it could be her own epitaph, certainly highly appropriate!

Sophie and Chris, I just watched both episodes of your magnificent voyage to the South Sandwich Islands. This is great stuff!! Congratulations on your accomplishments. In your videos, it all looks pretty easy, but for sure this has been a very demanding voyage that required a great deal of preparation and experience.
