That y cable is NOT ideal. The speakers need to be apart from each other. I would recommend a PC audio interface (they are fairly cheap) and running two seperate cords to each speaker. This way, you can place them any length apart from each other. 👍🏽

For those that just want to listen to music like me, a female to male cable would be cheaper than an audio interface as you only need to extend one end of the Y Cable and so you get the speakers away from the other.

I use the same set up but with a better cable from guitar center and there is more than enough cable to spread the speakers apart.. now I run this cable to the KRK sub and each monitor has its own cable. I use the set up with my DJ gear, MPC one, TV, and laptop. Just for home use I personally do not need another peripheral in my way..

Doesn't having your quality monitors so close together kinda defeat the purpose of monitors? They should form an equilateral triangle between your head and the monitors....

Great information - I'll get a longer cable that is longer so can separate them, though. Could do a Y cable that plugs closer to the source.

Omg I am so lucky my version of the speakers has RCA connector, thank you for making this video, I never knew I could actually use these speakers with my laptop until today, haha my father bought these speakers years ago and I never used them without audio interface, stopped using them when I upgraded my laptop as it no longer had a firewire entry for the audio interface... long story short, these speakers have been sitting around in a corner for more than 5 years without use, I felt bad to part with them as they are excellent quality. I can't believe it never occurred to me to use an RCA to jack adapter with them. I can finally enjoy their amazing sound with my laptop, thank you for giving me the idea with your video :)

the colour of the xlr plug determines L&R if it's split like the one in the video. otherwise if it's a cable per speaker then you'll need an interface which which have L&R channels for each cable

Although connecting the speakers in this fashion to the laptop will work it will not produce the best sound. You will get a better result by buying an audio interface which connects to the laptop via a USB cable. You then connect the monitors to the audio interface using 2 XLR cables. This will produce a much better sound for only a small addition outlay over the cost of the studio monitors themselves.

i have a question, i have been looking on the focusrite scarlett i am wondering if what gives best audio quality between the pc and the audio interface. is it usb, hdmi or optical? (or are there really any noticable differences, advantages or disadvantages to any of these?) my computers motherboard allready have an optical output.

@@colaphoenix6849USB, hdmi and optical(TOSLINK) are all digital connectors and should all sound basically the same. If you want to use the focusrite scarlett then you will have to use the USB connection as it does not have hdmi or optical(TOSLINK) inputs. However as your motherboard has an optical output you could use a DAC with an optical input between pc and the studio monitors. What your DAC will need is a balanced XLR output to connect to the monitors and these are not so common so you are likely to have to pay a premium to get it. I have a SONCOZ LA-QXD1 and would recommend it. My best advice here would be to spend as much of the budget on the monitors as you can and pair them up with a cheap audio interface such as the Bheringer U-PHORIA. That will give you the best sound for your buck.

@@FromTheHood The Monitor1 will not work for this job. You need something like this; Behringer U-PHORIA UMC202HD Audiophile 2x2, 24-Bit/192 kHz USB Audio Interface with Midas Mic Preamplifiers. Go into any musicians store and they should be able to sort you out with an audio interface and the XLR cables.

These are really meant for studio production, but there's no rule saying you can't just use them for your own enjoyment. You could probably find something that is cheaper that suites your purpose just as well.

Search for an “audio interface”. You can find them on amazon, Guitar center, sweetwater music, pro sound and stage lighting and other various sites. I’ve seen some as cheap as 50-60 dollars. After u have that, get two seperate cords for the speakers. 6ft-10ft is good.

I don’t like that the cables are so close together. I bought a similar one and the speakers are 2-3 feet away from each other. Why would I want those speakers so close? They also get feedback

XLR* Regular speakers are adjusted to make them sound better like having amplified bass. Studio Monitors play exactly the sounds that are played with them. Monitors are still great for listening to music with because you are hearing exactly how the producer made the song to sound like. It's always better to just run the monitors through a audio interface. The inputs to the monitors are balanced but the cord you used is not. So you can't separate the sounds from left to right. I'm just getting into this stuff and learning as I go but that's all I know so far.

Arnt these the speakers that switch off Auto after 25 mins if not being used, great idea not keen on switching on the power switch every time in use. should be on the front anyway

This is not correct, The XLR are balanced connectors that manage a diferential sound signal to avoid noise, so to connect to a laptop you need a converter box to convert balaced to unbalanced ( as RCA conector) from RCA you can buy a simple converter to 3.5 mm conector plug.

You have right . The plugs from krk is named TRS becouse you have a combination of xlr and jack .

wrong. TRS = jack. Tip Ring Sleeve. Stereo. Tip is one signal (left or right). Ring the other. Sleeve is ground. There's also TS, Tip Sleeve, which is mono.

You probably already have the answer, but help me spread the word bc youtube musicians are idiots and are spreading misinformation. Unbalanced cannot be converted to Balanced through cables alone, you need an audio interface to output balanced TRS signal. No Interfaces output XLR, so the cables used here are useless.

The issue with the "Y" is look at how close your monitors have to be to each other. There's not enough cable to put a monitor of each side of the computer...then thee is anywhere frro 3' to 20' of cable to go to a computer that's not that far away. The "Y" should be close to the computer Plug leaving ample length to spread the speakers.
