Correction: It's not a cheap prodct. It's an affordable product.

Hey there, I just watched your video, and it's great to see you unboxing and testing the TP-Link TL-SG108E switch. I appreciate your thorough review and the time you took to show us the details. I'm really interested in the VLAN configuration options you mentioned, as well as the loopback prevention feature. It would be awesome if you could make a dedicated video in the future to dive deeper into these features and how to use them effectively. Also, about the cable testing feature, it's a bit disappointing that it didn't detect a damaged cable. It's good to know its limitations. Looking forward to more of your videos! Keep up the good work. 😊

I thought Loop Prevention had something to do with Spanning Tree Protocol's loopback prevention (logical loop) and not a physical loop of putting the same cable to 2 ports of the same router. Also, as we know, ethernet uses 4 twisted pairs of cables and only 4 are needed to make a successful connection. The other 4 are just noise guards. You may cut 4 wires and be OK or you could break a pair and lose internet connectivity. You could have all 8 connected and still get noise that gives bad packets. I believe that cable test isn't checking the 8 wires, but the interference that's causing bad packets (that could indicate of course a broken cable of a close proximity with a power line or something else). If there is something that causes bad packets, it will show the approximate distance of the faults.

Not quite a pair ... RX+ & RX- are not the same pair. iebmedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/ieb4637_3.gif

2 pairs can only do 100mbps max , u need 4 pairs to do 1gbps , 2.5gbps & 5gbps. 10gbps & faster requires shielding for nosie protection. That's why u have those categories of cables.

That loop protection is a similar function to spanning tree, but not compatible wit it. It just checks for loops and not the shortest path.

Be careful with TP-Link switches and access points. Some models don't handle VLANs properly. BTW, I also have one of those Cisco switches here.

For the record - which wires did you damage in the cable? Since ONLY 4 wires are actually used, you might have simply cut the unused wires.

I'm sure that was it :)

SG108e is a decent unit. Unless you need a higher speed there's no need for the CISCO. I'm sure Cisco offers some other features if you need them. the 108 does everything i need. Mine has allowed me to maximize both speed and bandwidth.

Actually, both run at 1 Gb.

is it true that the built in web management doesn't support https? Also is the management interface really accessible from any VLAN that you create?

Hello not sure if you remember at this point but does this switch allow you to turn off EEE? Thanks!

Too bad that most cheap tp-link switches, you can access the management interface from any vlans. So much for security.
@ITVOIP
@ITVOIP 3 года назад
if its just accessing the management interface only it might be by design. I've locked myself out of the management interface by misconfiguring vlans on other switches so i can understand the reason for it. if it allows other traffic than its either a bug or design flaw.

@@ITVOIP In a corp environment or any compliance environment, this is a no. If this is by design, they can at least use 2fa and https as defaults.

It looks like this behavior can be changed. I haven't verified anything but from the following link it looks like you can change this. Maybe this is not the best default setting. www.tp-link.com/ca/support/faq/2157/

Okay, but if I just connect this device to my router and then the others devices to the to link switch will it start working with no problem or I need to go to this gui configuration thing process? Thanks!

That will work out of je box. You can totally use it as a dumb switch, but that would be strange since the dumb switch is cheaper 👍

Yes you will. There's a good chance that out of the box it will have all ports diabled. Just enable them in the App GUI. I love this little switch!

my supply of hardware is running short these days....you know this thing that happened last year its affecting what hardware lands in my hands. I've gone back to my childhood joy of programming. you can check the other channel for new videos if you are into that.

As time has now passed. And many passed with it. Supply chains are slowly coming back up. Would you be interested in now making more about this products features? No additional hardware required, could use free software controller instead of hardware controller.
