Simple tools to determine your situation. Here's what true RF line of sight is and how to determine if you have it to your local tower. I also discuss what is the best type of external antenna to use based on your specific situation. Cell tower emit signal in most directions and there is a fresnel zone that must be considered as part of the determination of "line of sight". I go thru how to determine that and some simple website tools to use to help calculate if you have line of sight. I talk about the 4G 5G panel antenna, log periodic direction antenna (LPDA) and the Griddy grid periodic directional antenna (GPDA).

Thanks again Nate, I am relatively close to line of site based upon your tutorial. I'm going to give the MIMO 2x2 Panel a try first with my trash can. Interestingly, I used the Open Signal App to initially identify my tower, however the Open Signal pointer is not the direction of the tower identifier. The tower it believes I am on does not have the N71 band that I am connected to. My speeds aren't great, so I'm hoping for a dramatic increase, though hard wired to the T-Mobile router provides a 30% speed improvement over a WiFi speed test. It's been a good geek-out project for the latest Texas ice storm.

I'm going to attempt to build my own dual Yagi antennas specifically for n71 (I cannot find a decent priced Yagi 650 MHz antenna anywhere) and I already have two Yagi that are tuned for B2. I'm going to try to set up the 4x4 quad polarity. I'm pretty sure two of the internal antennas are mimo dual polarity are for the n?? bands and the other two of the internal antennas are 2x2 for upper mid bands. I've noticed when I turn my gateway to the 3 o'clock position I have high snr and better signal on B2 but horrible on n71 and when I turn it to the 10 o'clock position I get better signal on n71 but worse on B2. It I turn it to 12 o'clock it seems to split the difference. It might be coincidental.

Hey Nat! Great video as always! We have Vzw for our cell phones but I'm looking at getting the T.M. home internet, we have a metal roof that kills our signal so definitely need one of these... In general if you have RF line of sight (as discussed in this video) you probably only need a 2x2 LPDA. Without direct RF line of sight then go for the 2x2 panel. If you really want to maximize then they have a new 4x4 panel to use.

Yes. The manufacturers say you absolutely should ground it. This video seems to be in reference using routers, what about for just getting a better cell signal on a phone? I’m sure the same websites you use in the video would apply? I live in an area that T-mobile told me today is in between their panels on their different towers so they classify my area as a poor reception area. I get 1 bar outside and in my home. Recently put up an external antenna with internal amplifier and antenna, signal goes from 1 bar to 3 bars. Using Yagi antenna outside. Wondering if a better “long range” antenna would work better. Have 3 towers nearby, one at 1.8 miles, one around 2 miles and the one I have my antenna pointed at is at 4.3 miles. I get the best improvement using the tower that is 4.3 miles from me. Thanks

Hello Nate, Thank you so much for your informational videos!! Hoping you can help? I currently have been using T-Mobile Nokia gateway, Wasn't getting a good signal, 2 bars ( I went ahead a purchased a 4x4 mimo antenna from waveform mounted the antenna on the roof and connected it via connections to the T-Mobile gateway. Unfortunately I haven't seen much improvements download 12-17/upload 2-4 speeds. I've been rotating the antenna side to side and up and down with no luck in finding a good signal. Is there a signal meter that I can connect to the mimo to determine the best location/position? Also, spoke to my neighbor who is using the arcadyan gateway NOT modified and he is getting 4 bars and upload 70-90 down 25-50 speeds. I went ahead and ordered a new service with Tmobile (to get the arcadyan) received it but still no luck in getting better speeds. I've tried in different locations and no luck. At this point I'm thinking sticking with the Nokia since I've spent the time modifying it and money with the external antenna.. Thank you in advance!!! John...

Before I got a signal booster I had one to no signal bars and no service. After installation, I get up to 5 bars but it fluctuates and is very slow to work for service. My cell tower I'm connected to is 8 miles away with trees around me. If I invest in a cellular router/antenna, will it encounter the same dilemma or be better with a different antenna with further range and possibly raise it higher?

I'm hoping somebody here might be able to help me out. I got TMHI about 2 months ago. The signal and speeds aren't great, so I got a Waveform MIMO 2x2 panel antenna. We don't have line of sight on our closest tower, said tower is just over a mile away as the bird flies, so they recommended the 2x2 panel. No matter what I've done, even with help from a Waveform employee, my signal doesn't get any better with the antenna. It's the same with or without the antenna. We've ruled out faulty equipment. The RSRP is -119, so highly congested. A neighbor claimed they're doing maintenance on our closest tower that won't end until December, but my Gateway is locking onto that tower. I called and they wouldn't confirm or deny the maintenance. We've tried to get a lock on other towers, no luck. Now Waveform is recommending adding a 2x2 log periodic to the panel to make a 4x4 hybrid panel/log periodic. They seem to think this will give us the best of both worlds and should get me an improved signal. Does this sound right, or are they just trying to sell me yet another antenna that probably won't work?
@NaterTater
@NaterTater Год назад
Is your antenna mounted outside and above the roofline? One test you could do is drive close (~1/4mile) to the tower with the gateway. Use a car inverter or alternative to power up the gateway and see what speeds it gets there. If its a major tower issue then your speed will be slow there too.

I have a similar issue for my basement. I use a signal booster to correct that (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OZuMahJxgTw.html) and that will address your cell phone signal. Its not as good for data as an external antenna on a home internet gateway (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bboYE4qcfDM.html) but it may meet your needs. You could do 1 of 3 things. Get a signal booster and rely on your cell phones for calling/youtube, get a cellular home internet service and install external antennas outside which will give you wifi inside your house for your phones to connect to and many support "wifi calling" so no worries if they get poor cell reception, or 3 do both of the above (which is actually what I have).

I just bought (2) 2x2 indoor panel cross polarized MIMO antennas on Amazon, $42.63 each, look for ZDTECH brand, will be testing both on all 4 inputs this weekend.. I am 4500’ from the tower and have RF line of sight, getting B66 & N41 already, just trying to lower noise & improve signal for consistent speed

NATER ! My man just Subd love the videos have a question for you bro! I have a tower literally across the street from me roughly 300 yds from my house so says google. What antenna would be best and do I need it higher up than just top of my roof which on the sides is about 11-12 ft should I consider raising it up on a pole ? Thanks hope you see this and keep the Videos a coming broseph . Thanks ! God bless

Could the griddy give me massive gains if I paired it with Dynalink AX3600

Hey Chris, glad you like the videos. If only 300 yrds away you should be getting a great signal even on 5G UC like n41 band. Are you having speed issues? Have you verified you are connected to that specific tower? If there is flat ground between you and the tower an antenna at roof height should be ok. I'd probably go 2x2 log periodic directional antenna.

Don't you have to account for the direction the panel is pointed on the cell tower and it's beam width angle? They are all not pointing directly at your location.
@ddennis002
@ddennis002 2 года назад
Since this factor is out of your control, this is where pointing your antenna in a different direction will sometimes result in better signal, lookup radiation pattern of the diffrent frequency cell antennas, the patterens are diffrent and you have your main lobe, secondary lobes and back lobe. These beam out the frequencry in a 3d patteren which is the fresnel zone of the signal and the main lobe will usually travel the furthest unless there are obsticals in the way. This is where the different freqs differ, the higher the freq the more narrow the radiation wave, the more narrow the wave the less penetration can be achieved resulting in less distance. Tower antenna are generally setup with a pitch that matches maximum distance for the given frequency and gain set for the panel. This is why cell towers are deployed on top of towers and structures and not at ground level. The pitch can also be different from panel to panel depending on the geological surrounding. I have a tower 5 miles from me about and on one side there is a 4-5 mile 300 ft drop valley and these panel have more of a downward pitch then the oppisite side which stays at level elevation and they have very little downward pitch.

I found out that my tower only has N71 as far as 5g so I have N71 and B66. I did a test today with a we boost signal booster the home one with the inside antenna that looks like a speaker. Anyhow it gave me a 10db signal boost on both 4g and 5g and that was without actually pointing the yagi antenna at the tower. I just had it stuck in the window. So if anyone was wondering if a booster will work the answer at least for b66 and n71 the answer appears to be yes.
@NaterTater

Well it boosts the RSSI but also the noise. Did your speed improve?

Oh but there both n71 and b66, b2 old 4g bands so if your upload is already good as was mine between 40mbs - 65mb there isn’t any reason it shouldn’t work. It works for your phone. It won’t transmit but if that’s not the issue ie good uploads it should work fine. Same as the last panel antenna without opening the can. Because Celfi boosters can boost up to 100db and an antenna can’t.

@@wesbryant7139 boosters have all sorts of limitations. They boost noise as well, cant do mimo (basically just 1 of the 4 antennas on the gateway), amongst other things.

@NaterTater
@NaterTater 2 года назад
there's a chance. What does their coverage map show? n41 has a "fan" shape to the coverage so you'd need to be on one of the "blades" (ie cell has to be pointed directly at you.

They DON'T Emulate around ( the towers Signals ) They Propagate around in Either a Vertical & or Horizontal fashion. Yet in many ways 98% of the people wont understand what you mean. Though i like those 4x4 antennas So to it is a Bit of a pain to Properly set up ( the 45 degree mimo arangements thats required ) Then one Also can use a Simpler yagi antennas For the specific band/frequency you are seeking ( still a 2x2 or 4x4 requires the mimo 45 degree off set ) As far as a single antenna Yes the Grid does quite well Yet is a much larger antenna to mount You still can use 2 or 4 grid antennas for mimo arrangements..but now a very complicated and hard install Dealing with cel frequencys.. Brings an issue of great loss of signal. Coax makes a huge difference.. At my old place i used heilex 1 and 7/8 feedline 75 ft run My point Countless ways of doing it Yet for many price and or how hard it is to do Culminates either in a good..so so or garbage set up
