today's topic is a little different, so this video is coming out earlier than usual!
as many of you know, I studied abroad in Costa Rica with UCEAP from October - December 2022, and it was hands-down the highlight of my college career (and maybe like, my life???). Honestly, given my financial situation, I never considered study abroad as a possibility - but I did my research and ended up having my fees fully covered by financial aid and scholarships!
this video is part recap, part resource - I hope this is helpful to other prospective study abroad students who are worried about paying for their program. While you likely will end up paying at least some of the cost out of pocket, there are many ways to limit your expenses.
this is a very new type of video for me - would you guys like to see more travel advice/discussion videos in the future? let me know what topics you'd be interested in seeing if so!
thank you for watching :)

I’m late but thank you for your transparency about your financial background. I am in a similar situation where I receive practically no aid based on my guardian’s income and struggle to even qualify for scholarships.. Im hoping to go again when im older for the same reason as filing as na independent

Hi Lynn! I'm trying to study abroad for a year during 2025-2026 in Korea through UCEAP as well. I don't receive financial aid and I know the financial aid package applies which is a bummer. Would scholarships be my best bet and how much could I get covered? I also heard that going for a year means that you have more scholarships. Idk I'm definitely worried about funding it but I'm not sure what else I could do on my end.

Watching this video really helped, currently i'm a sophmore in High School and I am so excited to go to college. My dream school is UCI and I really want to study abroad in South Korea at Korea University with UCEAP. Is there any advice you have on courses I should take right now that UC's like? Essay tips? Thanks so much! :))

Thank you for watching the video! I'd recommend taking a good range of AP courses, but don't stress over grades any more than you have to. Extracurriculars (ones you actually enjoy) are also great, and could provide a strong basis for your personal essays moving forward! And if you have any teachers you particularly like, participate in their class, ask them questions about college during their free time, and overall just build goodwill with them in case you need a letter of recommendation moving forward. Good luck!! I'm so excited for you to study abroad in Korea one day

I was in the same situation, I was so sad for weeks bc I couldn’t afford it but then I won scholarships that paid for it! Some scholarships can even pay the flight if they’re sent to you as a check :)

Hello i have a question please i am a 12th grade student right know and i like to study abroad should i search for scholarship now or should i search for scholarship when i pass my final 12th grade exams? And thanks for sharing the experience
@lynndjung

I would recommend not studying abroad until your 3rd or 4th year of university! A lot of programs don't allow 1st and 2nd years to study abroad anyway. You have plenty of time to apply for scholarships :)

Hello, I don't know if you will respond, but I would like to know which programs are for studying abroad, but how and differently, I don't have money, I'm in 8th grade, I'm still in elementary school.

And how does financial aid work, etc., I'm from Brazil but I wanted to visit the United States or Canada, South Korea, etc.
@lynndjung
@lynndjung 5 месяцев назад
So unfortunately I don't know how financial aid works in Brazil, but in the United States at the university level (so not high school), a certain amount of financial aid is allotted to students based on their parents' income. There is a standard form to fill out for it that opens every year. It might be worth asking your teachers at school or your administration for guidance!

I have a question, bear with me lol, but I kind of informally moved out of an abusive home and am living with another family. They can’t really pay for my college stuff because they have their own children, but we are stuck between making me their legal child, or emancipating me (making me financially on my own and a legal adult) Since they can’t pay for college, should I go ahead and become legally independent so I can get the money that you got at 24?

Btw, I have a 4.0 gpa at the moment, I’m very driven, and I just need out because I feel suffocated in my state, but I’ve been learning French and I thought it might be great to just… go.
@lynndjung
@lynndjung 4 месяца назад
Hi!! I'm by no means an expert and I'd recommend reaching out to someone with more professional experience but given the roadblocks I ran into while trying to secure financial aid before age 24 and what I heard from financial aid officers and my school, I'd tentatively recommend considering emancipation. But again-please take this with a grain of salt. I wish you the best of luck!
