Since you read every comment, I, just like many others, want to express my gratitude towards you Marc! Your content really helps a lot and I feel like there is no excuse for me to say that I don't have access to art education. The only limit is the will to learn. Been following you as well as a few other artists for some time now and it's amazing what you provide to the art community. Thanks you once again for providing this content for free!

@asimian8500
@asimian8500 10 месяцев назад
Perfectionism is the the mind killer. Here's a tip that helped me out. Get a light blue pencil (I use Pilot Color Eno with soft blue lead) and rough it in and then the final with a regular pencil (I use 2B). For the rough use simple shapes to block it in. It's easier to get the proportions and angles right at this stage. Another technique is to use a cheap ball-point Bic pen. It will force you to think before you commit a line. You can combine this with a light blue pencil and finish the drawing with a pen.

Regarding the first piece of advice I want to add one thing, many times there are those who have wrist tablets (like the wacoms intuos and others) in those cases to have a more confident line, you can try to zoom out of the drawing and have it take up the entire screen, You will still continue using your wrist but this way you can cover more distance

It makes sense. I don't think I'm bad at lineart, but I definitely lack of confidence in that area. I mean, I end up redrawing the same like as if I made a mistake, even when I didn't even see the result yet. I'll try to apply these advices, I really hope I can improve in this!

One thing I struggle with is the relationship between canvas size/ brush size. I sometimes see people use smaller canvas and retain good lines, but then i use a bigger canvas and still get blurry lines. Maybe you can make a class about that? Idk if that makes sense..

@@layzehair8385 as I understand it that only applies if you are printing? I use 300
@not_allen1107
@not_allen1107 10 месяцев назад
I think a good way to determine line thickness is to view your canvas at its full size and a distance it would been seen (video thumbnail size vs wallpaper size). And then seeing if your lines are visible enough. Are you able to see and understand it at a quick glance. Basically, how important is your lines relative to the rest of your art work determines the thickness.
@kundudelcastillo
@kundudelcastillo 4 месяца назад
Dpi doesn't apply just to printing. Dpi defines the pixel density, which traduce to detail. 1 in square at 72 dpi contains exactly 72 pixels, that means that if your brush is 5px thick, you don't have much room to play with. So increasing your pixel density gives you more space to work with your brushes. Remember pixels are both a distance measure and a resolution measure at the same time, Thad why its so confusing. Try using a generous size like tabloid at 300 dpi, and you will feel the difference immediately. I personally use a 4000 x 4000 pxl size at 300 dpi to work pretty much everything as a starting point.

When I first got my drawing tablet, all I did for months was exercises. Focusing on shoulder, elbow, wrist, and fingers. Building each individually and then started combining them. I would work on drawing circles for hours, until my arm felt like it was going to fall off. Because I wanted the reps, I wanted to build the muscle memory and control. It paid off. I can pretty much always draw clean lines now, even if I haven't drawn for a while. I spend a little bit warming up with circles, straight lines, tracing a line (Straight or curvy and wobbly).. basically just recalibrating, and then I do pretty okay. These skills are very valuable. I just feel like I *suck* at construction. I also kind of hate doing it.. which probably means I need to do it until I don't hate it and am comfortable/good with it.

Thank you Marc, I struggle with line quality not because I don't get it, it's because of the way others explain it, and the examples that are used don't deliver the message that well. This video and your other videos on line quality are my reference because I actually understand what you are teaching, and your examples deliver the message. That intro was clever and funny, it's like big brother Marc talking with little brother Marc about getting hia practice reps in to get good.

So I just kinda figured this out from a video from I think was art senpai and it made a huge difference for me in terms of line confidence and that was knowing what my brush strokes were going to be before I made them. He described that most lines are either a S shape C Shape Or I shape, and that they can be found in a lot of different drawings. So I gave it a go and it made a huge difference. I was able to say oh Ok I want a... OH! a C shape here! and this little part should probably be a Oh a I shape because its long and straight! Just knowing where it was going I felt made the biggest difference! I'd love to hear your take on the technique!

Great tutorial and presenter. I'm interested in one question: how to determine how many lines should be in the form? Let's take a cylinder as an example. A cylinder in which the circles are not fully visible. How many lines should it have? 4? 2 straight and 2 convex? Or 2? Left with a bulge and right with a bulge? Or does it depend on the artist’s skills, how well he can convey a complex shape with one line, how many lines does he need? Sorry for my English, I'm using a translator.

Thanks Marc! pretty interesting as always! Even though some of these topics have been presented before, I find it to be a good reminder with some more tips thrown in between, so I really appreciate recapping the fundamentals. For a topic, I'd personally be very intrested in seeing something regarding the differences between the finer male and female details. There are the obvious big details like hips, boobs and shoulder ratios, but I don't think I've seen topics that focus on some of the finer details like mouth detail, eyelashes, finger structure (since females usualy have finer fingers and longer nails), muscle definition, and so on.
