This is the latest version of my "Which Blade". This is the concept model. NOT considered a final product. The reason I didn't attach the hilt is because I may change it and didn't want to attach permanently. I also want to model the entire handle in fusion360 in preparation to fully mill the part on the Tormach 440 in future video.

Great build. I've read comments that "this doesn't seem practical" or "I wouldn't buy this" and more. Why does that matter? I see no where that Mr. Diresta will only build cute little publicly appealing items. He's a crafts man, he builds what he wants or what he is paid to do. The workmanship is clean and beautiful. Once again we see the level of his skill. Once again I am inspired. Thank you Mr. Diresta.

I know there's a learning curve for the CAD/CAM side of it and its great to see you incorporate things that may be hard to master with the elements more familiar to you into the flow of your creation. My favorite bit of the many mediums was the bent ruler curve! Low tech and hi tech blended beautifully.

To those that are overly critical: It is a prototype. I am sure there will be many more to come before he has a good product. This is how engineering works. No invention is right on the first try. When I go camping. I want a giant knife to split fire wood but also a pocket knife to open cans with. This could end up quite useful.

As a knife enthusiast i very much like this idea, but i think theres a few improvements to be made/adressed. for a fixed blade this size, full tang is very nice to have, and i think if it were full tang you could attract the multi-tool/knife community more. have you thought about making your own blade out of the same piece of metal as the handle? it would be more expensive to do, but the benefits would be great. maybe a cheaper steel like aus8a or 440c would make it cheap enough to make but still be a great worker. Another recommendation is maybe making the whole thing into three parts: 1: A full tang blade with the hole for the leatherman in the center, 2&3: Handles with the same hole sandwiching the tang for more grip. The benefits of doing it like this would be that you could use a higher quality steel for the blade, and have it full tang, and also would allow you to add flare to it by using some nice stained wooden handles or anodized titanium, whatever you or the person buying it from you would like. Just some thoughts, great idea!

There was something elegant about the last version - using the Leatherman itself as the handle, with a snap-on large blade was really appealing and seemed like a slam-dunk as a product. This one seems to be a solution in search of a problem. Great video, though, as usual.

@FernHillOhio
@FernHillOhio 7 лет назад
I dont get it. The Leatherman has a blade on it already. Why put a knife inside your knife? Thats like driving around with a Miata in the bed of your truck. Not to mention, the fixed blade knife would be rendered useless with the extreme discomfort of the handle and the lack of any real tang to make the blade safe to use for any real tasks you would need a fixed blade for. Maybe Im missing the point here. Someone fill me in. I mean, if this is just a task to sharpen skills (pardon the pun) on the machine, then I get it but "concept model" leads me to believe there is a potential for another model or possibly a production run. What is the market for this? Why would someone want this? Not busting balls. Big fan actually. Just confused.
@markf.4063
@markf.4063 7 лет назад
I'm kind of in agreement. As far as a proof of concept I guess I get it but I'm drawing a blank as to the intended market. The multi-tool in the handle just seems like a novelty to me. Most guys that are going to carry a Leatherman on them may not have a need/want/desire for an 8"-10" inch fixed bladed knife at all times. It kind of reminds me of those ridiculous 'survival knives' with the hollow handle filled with otherwise useless items that were extremely popular in the 80's....they sold a shit ton of them though.
@markf.4063
@markf.4063 7 лет назад
Oh I don't doubt that one bit but I would venture that most were bought simply because of the novelty itself and the supplied 'survival items' were either forgotten, taken out and lost or otherwise. The knives themselves had an inherent weak point built in by design. i.e. little to almost no tang to speak of.
@SuicideNeil
@SuicideNeil 7 лет назад
I didn't want to say anything out of respect for Jimmy, but I agree with you completely- the lack of a proper tang might be overcome by fixing the blade on the final design quite securely ( lock knives have no tang as such after all... ), but the over-sized handle, horrible lumpy multi-tool in the middle, and general awkwardness of the concept just leaves me puzzled. As a one-off or limited production collectors item, sure, he'd sell them easily, but I can't help thinking a large-ish fixed blade knife with a sheaf that holds the multi-tool in a pocket would be just as practical and much nicer to hold- you have to put the thing in a sheaf anyway, so... yeah....
@MrMistery101
@MrMistery101 7 лет назад
I'd wager they screwed a few people too depending on them. As for the practicality of this, well, I too draw a blank. I might have missed it, but is the tangless knife just pressed in?
@Squiddy12
@Squiddy12 7 лет назад
CopingWithTheTimes this is his third video with the title "Which Blade". it is a cool concept that takes the challenge of putting two knives into one. he now has 3 knives with each consist of two knives. they aren't meant to be practical or maybe not even useful. it is cool and apparently he enjoys making them as he now has 3.

Happy New Year. I think it is a great looking knife/tool. I have 1 concern, the part where the blade enters the aluminium handle is quiet thin, with a repeated chopping action with the knife would it hold up. Anodized aluminium in different colours or maybe water transfer could be an option. Thanks for your channel.

The obvious answer to the common question of "why" or "what is this for" or "What is the market/application for this one" is: If you have to ask then you might never get it. This is a great idea! I'm a big fan of your videos Jimmy, but i'm also a bit confused by this build haha: Why would somebody carry this? The big blades tang is about an inch so it can't perform the tasks a fixed blade would be used for and how is it meant to be carried? Blade down in a sheath? Wouldn't the multi-tool just fall out and be really uncomfortable since it protrudes? Also how universal is this, surely its one sized slot for one multitool, in which case only somebody with 'x' multi-tool can buy it? I dunno, would just like to hear your thought process behind why and when people would use it over a conventional fixed blade

Looks great - watched you make the knife but was cringing the whole time because of that pressure fit for the blade. Yes, I read the description afterwards and was greatly relieved. I might suggest a double pinning for the blade on the final model, or just use some brass/copper pins and don't peen them over for easy changes during testing.

This seems to be a '180' from the first Witch blade, in that the accessory was the large blade (which clipped onto the primary tool). Here the multi-tool is the secondary accessory, clipping into the the straight knife, that has become the primary tool. I prefer the original concept, over this version.

Hello Jimmy. I definitely like the idea behind this knife. I have not worked too much with metal in regards to milling, so pardon my ignorance if this is a silly question... It is a very nice concept and it looks very nice. Have you considered ways to take the blade's tang all the way to the bottom of hilt in future iterations? Perhaps having the tang curve around the inner tool or machining the hole through hilt and wide tang at the same time? Either way, well done and thank you for sharing.
@whacknerd227
@whacknerd227 7 лет назад
Hey Jimmy! Perhaps for the next revision you could machine a little off of the sides of the handle to add a leather (or other material) to the handle to create a different look/improve the grip of the knife, but also to make it so you're not gripping cold metal in cold work areas! Also, perhaps adding a taper to the knifes leatherman slot, so you can really push the leatherman in there so it won't fall out? All the best, -Andrew
