There was no freehand involved. He simply used the edges of the piece as a guide for his hand. It's an extremely simple technique, most people marking any material use it. There were some great examples of skill and technique on display, this was a minor one.

I watched a video of a Japanese professional knife maker caring for his knives. He had a curious bald spot on the back of his head. Not at the crown like some but just above the neck and only on the right side. Since Japanese men are not known for their arm hair, he was testing sharpness on his scalp! Dedicated craftsman.

Now Jimmy, you know that aluminum isn't the proper material for making a handle for your giant double-sided razor blade. The smooth surface can cause your hands to sweat, then you would decapitate yourself while shaving Then I guess it really would be "Diresta's Cut." So let me ax you a question...when are you going to make a huge medicine cabinet to keep it in? I really do like your work, and you've got the chops to pull this off. I know, I know -- cut it out -- you can't handle the edgy humor. All seriousness aside, though...I got a chance to use our new laser at our Makerspace. First thing I did was make some stencils with my last name. Now everything I own is tagged. Tools, toolboxes, creeper, bandsaw, garage floor and walls, storage tubs, random cardboard boxes, tarps, doors, workbenches, pegboard, shelves, trash cans, bags of raked leaves, the spare fridge and freezer in the garage, compressor...see what you started?

+David Springs The problem with aluminium is it lack of a Fatigue limit, that axe handle is one day going to sap because of work hardening and in turn stress cracking. Until then it's a lovely axe.

+Wilson Aguirre Not that hard in this case, you let the fingers glide across the edge of the block, as long as you keep your hand inte the same position the line becomes straigth. Kind of a common technique to use when you don´t need things to be that exact, since his grinding everything down later anyway.

The handle has fully cured due to the time of purchase, and the time of useage. I carefully fitted the head. I now have the best Axe I have ever owned.

it is too heavy, the balance is off, it will shatter, it was "hung" all wrong, brass wedge is a bad idea, you will get blisters, you should only ever use BLO to finish any axe, 6061 is the worst aluminum to use for this application, this head will fly off and hurt someone, you can not hold aluminum in the cold, galvanic corrosion will make the axe explode in my hand, the leather will slide off and the axe will go flying, your arm will vibrate and cause muscle fatigue, the bandsaw technique will cut off you fingers. and it needs to be hand sharpened. Just kidding. Looks absolutely gorgeous. That's a great sheath design, I was wondering what kind of sheath I should put on the knife I'm doing, and that looks perfect.

I've watched this video, (and many others of yours as well) a lot times now. I can honestly say, I've never seen anyone use the bandsaw to that level to the point it's carving the 6061. Amazing, keep it up

I was just wondering how are you going to prevent the aluminum and steel from having bimetallic corrosion?
@RuslanB

Brasses, aluminum and steel are very close in the nobility chart. There will be ,minimum of bimetallic corrosion.

Great project, the wood/leather case for the axe head was genius, every axe has leather only. I've used axes and hatchets that had metal handles, if it's made right vibration isn't an issue, wood has a nice feel and looks right maybe that's why everyone cries so much. Love the videos

I'm not sure if I missed it - what's the total weight of the axe, out of curiosity. When I was a kid, my grandfather (cutting wood for a living in retirement) got tired of breaking axe handles so he fixed an old axe head to a solid steel handle (made out of flat stock) and it was pretty strange to swing. He was hardened man, so it didn't bother him. I don't remember any vibration from it, I think it was too heavy to transmit much of anything back to the user due to the wood being on the losing end of the battle with it.

Never did weigh it. But yes, No vibration at all.. but no one believes me. Thank you for commenting ! And watching.

@lawrenceneuser6342

I'm sure your grandfather was good at what he did. I replaced a hammer handle with a all steel handle, big mistake, I rarely use that hammer now, I need to cut the handle back, Weld on a thinner pipe instead of the solid steel shaft it now has to reestablish the balance of the tool.

Looks beautiful, but one has to ask...how practical is it? I notice when you're actually felling the tree, you keep taking breaks. Is that fatigue due to the weight of the handle over a standard wooden one? ( even a small difference in ounces could increase fatigue exponentially ) Or would you put the blame squarely on your lack of physical conditioning?
@jimmydiresta
@jimmydiresta 9 лет назад
Yes it is heavy. It did kick my ass. Not very practical but fun to swing. In all It took about 15 minutes including breaks to catch my breath. Thank you
@scottverge938

jimmydiresta It is dead/dry wood as well. I think if it was a green tree it wouldn't take quite as much work.

8BitLife I was wondering if someone would mention that. I also think the extra weight has to help it hit harder as well. MxA=F and all. I wonder if it balances out because of that or not. Either way it looks awesome and I want.

jimmydiresta I love the shit out of it. It's truly beautiful, one hell of a functional display piece. It's one of those things that I'd polish to a mirror shine, and hang in my shop where no one could put fingerprints on it. LOL

I think all manly men with hairy arms that sharpen tools have a shaved area on their left arms. Or right arm if they are left handed. I'm now about to go to the bathroom to shave an area on my arm in an attempt to look more manly. Nice build Jimmy.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't understand how hitting the bottom of the axe handle can force the handle through the hole in the axe head if nothing is holding the axe head in place. From what I see, you're holding the axe upside down suspended in air, axe handle in one hand and with the other, you're hitting the bottom. So how does that translate into the handle going through the hole?
@milesmetcalfe94
@milesmetcalfe94 7 лет назад
Don't know the physics of it but, it is the correct way to seat and axe head.
@lucchesi87
@lucchesi87 7 лет назад
Inertia... Have you notice the gap he opened on the top of the handle? When he inserted a small portion of the top in the axe's head it works like an inverted clamp, then he turns it upside down. When he hammers the bottom of the handle, the inertia makes the axe's head "unwilling to move" with the handle, so the handle moves in a little bit... then repeats the process...

That is a nice axe. The aluminium gives it a shiny, futuristic design. I also liked the latchable case for the axe head. It gave a unique touch to the project.
