If you have rust on your chrome wheels,
here is a way to get rid of that rust on the wheels easy and fast.
I tried the aluminum foil and coke, and it doesn't work)
You need a power drill and a wire wheel to get the chrome off.
These wheel in the video are from a Toyota Landcruiser FJ60 and also FJ62,
The chrome on the Toyota wheels is thick and you can't really damage them.

In the 80s those rims were made in USA and there was some quality, thats why those old chrome rims still look good.

Those rims are made in Japan.

Japan does it better, always have. The reason most rims look this good from that length of time is less exposure to salts and corrosive substances on the roads and in cleaners.

Use naval jelly. The rust will just melt off. Works really well. Also if they tend to rust back quickly. I have sprayed clear coat on them.

Also try a steel wool pad, 00 or 000 and see how that does before you bring out the big guns!

@@CruisingTheLand these old wheels are pretty rough and still have tires on them. Should i have the tires removed before working on them? Real question is do i need to worry abt more rust where the tire is covering?

If you are perfectionist, remove tires, but if they hold air, yiu have no sealed issues, typically rust will not be inside since its not exposed to the elements. Personally, I would leave them on.

@@CruisingTheLand all the bad rust is only on the backside. The steel wheels still have the factory mocha brown paint on them with some obvious patina on the front side that would match my rusty brown waggy perfect. Only the backside of the rims are pretty rough. And on two of the five i have the actual outer edge of the rim is flakey on the inside. Makes me think i should have the tires removed before starting the project.

I repaint all my rims after 2,winters the rims started to rust before I used wire brush meticulously I will try again this year before winter this year.

Does it matter how you polish aluminum wheels inside, around a bead, when you change a tire? I cleaned all the dirt around the bead w/120-150 sand paper using oscillating tool and a small (1") metallic wheel on a drill. I planned to go after w/400 and 600 grit, but now think, maybe all that can effect the perfection of the sealing of the tire (I'll use the tire grease of course, when mount a new one back). In your film there is also one wheel polished w/tire removed. I would appreciate any opinions on this matter. On the outer face of the wheel I'll definitely follow the procedure described in this wonderful film. Thank you.

You might try de-rusting using electrolysis and a kiddie pool. You would be surprised how well rust jumps off of something. I've not tried it on chrome before though, so be careful that your chrome isn't "jumping off" your rim too.

I have similar steel chrome wheels, they have a clear coat on top which started to peel off and it keeps peeling, and now they are rusting where the clear coat peeled, is it a good idea to use that wire to remove the existing clear coat and clean the rust ? i'm afraid that the chrome 'layer' will get scratched.

After wire wheeling the backs. If you cleaned them with alluminum wheel acid. It will remove the remaining rust it's a great product. Cut it with water like 1:8

Can you take the wire wheel on the chrome side ...? Or are you just taken the wire wheel on the inside of the chrome wheel ..??? Cause I’m afraid of stripping off the chrome on the chrome side ... but the chrome side is looking pretty bad as well on my chrome foose wheels ... I washed my wheels and took simple green to clean most of the dirt and brake dust off , but on the chrome side , I got a bunch of oxidation and a little pitting and rust , but I used a steel or brash brushes to manually do it , it took me from 9am to about 7pm just to get two wheels looking a lot better , but I still want to try and polish the chrome up and get rid of all the oxidation and mineral build up off , so much freaking work , I might just have to get them refinished , cause now I’m sore af , anyhow thx 🙏 for sharing, love the video 👍👍👍👍👌👌👌👌👌

Aluminum will polish up... chrome corrosion wont. The wheels in my video are OEM chrome by Toyota and they are bullet prood. I eir brushed them in the inner rim area that had the rust, and it made it 95% better. I had nothing to lose, and ultimately you cant notice that there was ever rust... now foose wheels, chromed and made in china in the late 2000s vs late 80s is likely 2 different qualities of metal and chrome...

@@CruisingTheLand right , those sought after Toyota chrome wheels that you brought back to life after you cleaned those messes , turnt out magnificent 👌 my late 2000’s Chinese foose wheels are definitely no comparison especially when it comes to the chrome pitting out around the bead , where leaks often occur , the wheels look so dam smoking tho’ , I probably have to get new set of wheels and throw the brand newish $1200 pilots from the foose wheels on a new set of wheels and possibly restore the foose wheels to function and powder coat em’ , and have an extra set on deck , if they are even worth the trouble , but thank you for your feedback I subbed to your channel love the energy bro , keep banging em’ out , I’m inspired by this , I’ll keep checking it out thx 🙏 for sharing 👌👌👌💪💪💪😽😽😽

I have a question, once you repaint it, does the rust come back? I repainted a metal wiper arm before and just after a month all the rust came back despite all the sanding I have done.

In the chrome, I dont repaint. I just keep it polished, so if it did start back, you would see it and then just wirewheel it again. But if you are painting, you could base coat ir with a rust inhibitor, same that they use on chassis from Por15 or Eastwood paint (maybe better for spray can) then put your top coat finish. On chrome or metal, if you paint you also would need to seal wuth an epoxy. I have painted wheels and have some videos on my channel showing how.

Good stuff! I'm refinishing some OEM chrome wheels for a GX470 that are BADLY pitted and flaking. Is there a high-build primer or something you recommend for scratches and pitting between the metal and the primer, or between the primer and the paint? Thanks!

Yes lots of coats to fill in the pitting. But you can only see the pitting when you are up close. Just depends how much more work you want to put into them.

you just have to try a spot to see... The older wheels, that chrome is thick and hard as hell.

We just bought a 2006 Chrysler 300 touring car that has rust on the wheels and on the rims. How do I know if those are chrome wheels or painted wheels or aluminum wheels? Is there a test for chrome like there is for aluminum? I see that with aluminum you put on that paste and it turns black no matter what.

Yes, aluminum will turn a whire cloth with polish into black. Chrome and paint won't. And aluminum does not rust.

I have done the same wire wheel to brake drums (outer) and then hit it with Black Rustoleum. As for brake rotors, the actual discs, I would not use a wire wheel...
