If you want to reinvent something new (?) I made, I programmed a 1D asynchronous cellular automaton where each cell was looking into a large spatio-temporal neighborhood, tried to understand the rules followed by the cells, and applying the rule it discovered to itself. Each cell was trying to be coherent with their neighbors, but it did produce very interesting and incoherent results!

@@TodePond CAs are some of my first programming loves, along with Mandelbrot sets ;-) As a teenager, I played with some rules (such as the sandpile algo or thermodynamic ones) and ended up with a master thesis on Lattice Gas Cellular Automata (FHP3 type) to simulate fluid flows. It is good (tm) to have a lot of "culture" about all the types of CAs out there, their working, their behaviours and properties, and your video is a nice overview ! I wish it was longer though ;-)

With your first one that is basically GoL with a Ferz-Dabbaba neighborhood, I thought of an interesting idea: fairychess GoL. Every piece has a state. That state is defined by a combination of elementary leapers. Since we're using the birth/survival rules of GoL, each piece has exactly three parents. Surviving squares do not change their state. But newborn squares combine the states used by their parents to create them, with finite range states taking precedence over infinite range states.

After 23 years on this earth and approximately half of them spent on the internet, I didn't think I would ever discover a whole new "type" of video to fall in love with. Of course the animations and the narration are superb, but what really prompted me to write this comment is this feeling of unearthing something completely new. This feels like a weird mix of slam poetry, meditation and nerdy math stuff. Maybe this was a bit more noticeable for me because I already did a lot of automata stuff myself and felt like I already knew a bit about the topic itself, but wow, this was an awesome watch. Inspiring creativity. You deserve way more attention for this, let's hope me and the other 7000 people weren't the last ones to get steered towards this corner of the internet by its beloved and mysterious algorithms.

I really admire your channel. You have such a unique touch thats very funny and heart warming. It's great to see so much personality in a nerd video like this, with some really good high level explanations as well. This video is my favourite and I really like the commentary on ~being unique~ Edit: I need to edit this because I don't like my intial phrasing. To me, this video showcases not the issue with individuality but the issue with seeing uniqueness as being inherently competitive. Thinking that an idea can only have value when it comes from the first people. But ideas don't originate from single people but are instead a product of multiple people synthesizing together. They are even a product of society at large, as these ideas could only be made given their education. And this education could only have happened given the hard manual labour of the gentle worker, keepnig the academics in their chair! And so while ideas are a product of society at large, so too do they belong to society at large. Patents and the concept of plagiarism only stagnates the creative process of the collective and we are much better off without them. The only difference between you and them is that they came first, they had material wealth to materialize their ideas, and they had an academic background to get outreach. These are not good reasons to stagnate the progress of ideas.

Thank you very much! That's very kind of you to say! I guess... I don't like how competitive people can be online. And I don't like how some people talk to each other online. So I channeled some of that into this video :) Imagine a world where people didn't comment like the commenters in this video. It would be better I think! I make stuff because I enjoy it, and it lets me express my feelings+thoughts. So, whether something I make is original... or helps the world... or is good... That stuff doesn't even come into consideration! ... whether you're old or you're new ... just be you 🐸🐦

@@TodePond I was going to make a Patreon for the first time to support but I looked into it and it seems they take a cut? Would you be open to making a Liberapay? It's FLOSS, non-profit, doesn't take a cut, etc. And I can be your first donor on it haha

@@culi7068 Oh wow that is very generous of you, thank you very much! Yes patreon take a little cut. I use patreon to run votes, and post weekly updates and things like that, so I'm happy to take a cut for that. I don't think Liberapay does that sort of thing (yet). That being said - it's totally up to you! If you would like to join my patreon and access these things, then please feel free to do so! If you'd rather use Liberapay though, that's also fine! :) You won't be able to participate in votes, but I can investigate auto-forwarding the weekly updates to any patrons on Liberapay 🤔 Let me know :) I'm setting up a Liberapay account either way just in case!

It's set up now at liberapay.com/TodePond/ So feel free to go for whatever you prefer! I'm totally happy for you to use patreon, where you'll get access to more things, but it's up to you :) Thanks again!

@@TodePond Hmmm good point. I donated on liberapay (mostly because I've always wanted an excuse to use it tbh haha). I'd be willing to pay the minimum on Patreon as well if you made me feel a bit better about it by also promoting your liberapay in future video descriptions haha. It's totally cool if not tho. I understand if you would prefer to avoid splitting up your patron community platform
