In this video tutorial I show you how we made colorful mushroom fairy houses using some empty jars, tin foil, hot glue, paper clay and paint. It’s a fun weekend project and the creations can be used as candy jars for a candy bar, birthday party, thank you gifts for a baby shower and so on. I think hand made gifts will always be appreciated. The mushroom fairy houses can be used as baby room decoration, piggy bank, jewelry box, cookie jar etc. So you need empty jars with lids, aluminum foil, paper clay (the one that keeps its size when dry - I used DAS modelling material, a great paper clay, but the secret is to water it a little and work it in your hand before you use it, to make it smoother), hot glue, water colors. Choose some jars and clean them with hot water and soap. Think about the shape of your mushroom fairy house. Start shaping some tinfoil into your mushroom’s cap integrating the lid at the bottom. You can add multiple layers of foil until you get the desired result. Glue the tinfoil cap to the jar’s lid using hot glue. Cover the tinfoil shape with a layer of clay and also start shaping the walls, the door and the windows on the jar. You don’t need to pay too much attention to details at this point. Let everything dry. Apply another layer of clay to create textures and details like door handles, roof chimney, stones or any detail that might give your fairy house a unique look. If the clay doesn’t stick to the previous layer I recomand you to water the areas you want to work on. Also keep a water container near by to wet your hands and working utensils when they get sticky. Use water to achieve smooth and shiny surfaces. Paint the fairy mushroom house in the desired colors. If you use watercolors for this step I recommend you seal them in the end with varnish or regular hair spray.

Frequently Asked Questions: 1. What clay do you use? I use a paper clay. I either buy it or make my own depending on what I want to create 2. What's the difference between the bought paper clay ( amzn.to/2r5FEHY ) and the homemade paper clay (A) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LkYGfBz_MTU.html (B) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_Ef-U6aZEoI.html )? The homemade one is not that soft and is only good for textured surfaces like stones and tree bark. It is very cheap to make so it might worth to sand it and work it a little more than buying a paper clay. However, you can't keep it more than 5 to 7 days in the fridge. It has the best consistency when you just made it and it's fresh, so I would recommend you use it in the same day or the next and don't make more than you need 3. Can I use air dry clay? What's the difference between air dry clay and paper clay? Often times shops will sell both paper clay and ceramic clay with the same label "air dry clay". It's true, both are air hardening but there are quite a few differences: air dry clay(ceramic clay) is actually mud, natural clay, while paper clay is made with cellulose and other ingredients. Paper clay is stronger than air dry clay(ceramic clay). Air dry clay (ceramic clay) shrinks and the paper clay does not shrink. This is why paper clay is the better choice for my kind of projects. My projects usually require you to cover a jar or a plastic bottle. If the air dry clay shrinks and the bottle or jar remain the same size... you guessed it... your air dry clay will crack all around. It might be a lot cheaper but it's not what you need for these projects. 4. My clay cracks, how do you cover the cracks? You don't, you change your air dry clay to a paper clay! See why at the previous question 5. How to waterproof my paper clay creations? I recommend using a yacht varnish. Apply a few coats and make sure you cover it all around so no water touches your clay 6. What brand of paper clay do you use? I use "Das modelling material" - amzn.to/2r5FEHY 7. Where can I see the list of materials? As a general rule of my channel... READ MY VIDEO DESCRIPTIONS! I write it for you guys, is no secret what I use. For every video I write a description of what I do and what I use. 8. Do you sell your creations? No, not yet, my daughter loves them too much. 9. What colors do you use? I mostly use watercolors and acrylic paint.

You could put one of those super-bright LED discs (or even just the fake candles) inside to make it appear like lights are shining through the windows. You could also frost the windows by stippling a bit of white acrylic inside the glass (this is great for dispersing the light)!

Hi again! I started making some of these little houses last weekend - I have used spice jars for two of the miniature houses and a jam jar for the other one - so three houses in the pipeline at the moment! I bought some air dry clay that Hobbycraft here in the UK are selling (it's made specifically for their shops - calleld "British air drying clay"). I found that it cracked a lot during drying and I had to keep repairing with watered down clay and a paintbrush (to paint into the cracks to 'glue' them back together again). At one stage the entire side of the house fell off the jar! I think I've fixed the problems now - I'm drying my houses under plastic, slowly. I will get Das clay next time and see if it's better to use. I can make my own polymer clay but I don't want to do a polymer clay house until I've perfected the technique. It's a really great project. My daughter suggested making a mini-Pub with a slate tiled roof, so that's my next project (complete with hanging sign). I wanted to ask you if you would be able to make a church out of jars? You are so talented, I think a stone church would look fantastic in clay. Anyway, thank you very much for your tutorials and being so giving with your knowledge and skills - your videos are brilliant and this is such a fun project. Can't wait for the summer holidays to show my grandchildren how to make something like this! Thanks again. Sorry for the long message :)
@CreativeMom
@CreativeMom 8 лет назад
+Janice Scott Oh, I'm sorry that your clay cracked. It's probably a natural clay and it shrinks when the water evaporates(it's clay, soil, great when making ceramic, but when you cover something, it will always crack). It will always crack no matter what you do. Das is a special clay that uses paper cellulose and a glue, it smells funny but It never shrinks. If you can't find it there I think Kohinoor had a similar clay maybe you find that one.
@CreativeMom

+Creative Mom The church idea sounds good, I would try it as a personal project, we have some great churches in our country. Thank you for the long comment, I like connecting with my RU-vid friends :)
@lucretiaonutube
@lucretiaonutube 8 лет назад
Thanks for your reply - yes it's a natural clay - very nice to work with but not ideal for this project. I can get Das clay here, I'll have a go with that next time!

At last the main thing is structure of the fairy house, if it's not ok then ur so called INEXPENSIVE things would get waste out
@Basketcase180
@Basketcase180 4 года назад
Ms. Xyz Paul glue gun is a one time buy. The glue sticks can be bought in bulk for fairly cheap, and each creation might use one glue stick, if that. Aluminum foil can be purchased at the dollar store and last for months. Paints, depending on the type you buy, really aren’t that expensive, either. At most, metallic paints from your typical craft store might be anywhere from $3 - $5 for the smaller size and (again) last for quite a few projects. So, in short, yes, these projects are very inexpensive. Anything in this world costs some amount of money, but for the amount you spend on the supplies for these houses and how many you can crank out with everything, it’s very, very cheap. Of course, I suppose even $15 - $25 is expensive to someone.

Hi, i tried this today and loved it until it started drying and flaking off of the jar. I used air dry white clay from Joanns. Did I do something wrong?
@CreativeMom
@CreativeMom 8 лет назад
+jodie lupine hi, unfortunately not all air-dry clays are good. The natural ones shrink when dry and if you covered something with it results in cracks. I used "das modelling material" google it or try to use a cellulose based clay, a paper clay. Have fun!

I made a toad house about a month and a half ago out of an empty honey jar that looked similar to the one you made here. I used air dry clay then didn't realize that you couldn't put it outside because it would disintegrate. I haven't finished painting it yet because I was bummed that I couldn't put it near my waterfall outside. Any suggestions on how air dry clay can be used in outdoor decor? Is there a sealant you can recommend? Very cute and I love your painting! Great job! I've subscribed!

+Robin Donnelly Thank you! I'm planning to make some models for outside and I want to seal them with two layers of yacht varnish. Just make sure you go all around and there is not even the smallest space where water can reach the clay. The varnish will change the color a bit. Have fun and let me know how it goes

I will! Thanks so much for answering. I'll Google yacht varnish to see where to get it.

+Nathaly Of course you can use them. We put candies because they are small, but if you have bigger ones you can put cookies or sugar or sweet treats or spices and you can write on the door or on top of the door what's inside ;) Thank you and have fun!

+namisha sinha Hi, thank you. I used "Das modelling material" it doesn't need baking, is cheap and strong in the end. For small jars you can use polymer, but for bigger jars, like the one in my last video it would be too expensive I think. Have fun!

hi, i totally loooove your creations and you're so talented! :) i have a question: i'd love to make these jars and keep them in the kitchen to store in them some stuff like salt, sugar, etc... is it a good idea? or is it better to keep them just as ornaments? i'm asking this because i'm worried they're a bit fragile or easy to spoil :( thanks in advance!

Ralony I have made lots of these myself and use them for all sorts like storing flour cooking materials ect As long as you apply a sealant and don't get the outside too messy it should be just fine
