The custard is the color of strawberry jello pie. I used to make it for my grandmother and also a family friend because they were both diabetic any time they came to visit because you can make the pie in any flavor of jello and you can make it diabetic by using sugar free premade graham crackers crusts (Keebler makes one) sugar free jello, and sugar free cool whip. It’s super simple: 1 package jello (any flavor in regular or sugar free), 1/2 cup boiling water, 1/2 cup cold water, 1/2 cup ice (I used crushed), 1 premade graham cracker crust (regular or sugar free), 16 ounce tub of thawed cool whip (regular or zero sugar). Mix boiling water and jello until dissolved, add cold water and ice and mix until all ice is melted and jello begins to thicken, refrigerate for 30-45 minutes until cooled completely, don’t allow the jello to set. Once jello has cooled, fold in cool whip a little at a time until there is no more liquid jello mixture. Mound into premade crust, cover loosely and refrigerate for at least 4 hours. Serve. This can be made in advance or 4 hours before serving. I have made it in lemon, cherry, peach, strawberry, lime, grape, and berry blue, but any flavor of jello will work and all the flavors I have tried were yummy!

oh my gosh Emmy I got so excited about this video!! My sweet late grandmother used to use red hots instead of sugar to make rice pudding with leftover white rice! She grew up in the great depression era and truly used EVERY bit of food possible, and this was one of her zero-waste creations. It is a family favorite to this day, and I still make it when i’m missing her. This video reminded me so much of her “red hot rice” as she would call it, and it instantly reminded me of my grandma ❤️ I have leftover redhots in my cupboard from making red hot rice and i’m thinking about trying out this pie now!!! I think it’s SO interesting how they were used in the late 30’s/early 40’s in recipes!!!! So cool!! Red Hots make me think of Christmas. My hometown does a little Christmas thing every year that we started going to because my choir sang there when I was a kid. They let you put red hots in your apple cider. My favorite place is always the little blacksmithing shed. They give out hand-crafted nails to people every year as sovoniers. I always have to get one. You get to watch them work and ask them questions and you can also buy some of the things they make. And it's nice and warm in there. We also always do the horse-drawn carriage ride, and we've had lots of fun on those.

This reminds me of something my husband likes to make called Pink Pineapple Topping. It’s just 1 can crushed pineapple 1/4 C red hot candies and a 1/4 C white corn syrup. Simmer all together over medium heat until candies are melted. We cool it down first and then serve over vanilla ice cream. Though it sounded terrible, but it’s actually really good!

Shelf stable cream is just normal cream made UHT (ultra-high temperature processed) so the "use by" date is extended and the refrigeration storage is not needed. It still needs to be chilled before whipping ☺️

Red Hots! I am so reminded of my Grandmother, in the 60s, making applesauce and stirring in Red Hots for color and flavor. I especially liked eating it before the Red Hots completely melted; you'd get that little crunch and bite of cinnamon!

This pie reminds me of the types of dishes we would see at our family pot lucks. There were always interesting sweet treats to eat. They seemed to always have cool whip/whip cream with a custard/pudding. I really miss those days. It has been many years since I thought of those dishes. Some were very good and some well not so good. Oh just to go back to those fun filled times with family and pot luck dinners.

My family has a holiday "Salad" recipe from the 50s involving melting redhots with apple sauce, adding plain gelatin (original recipe called for apple Jello, but they don't make that flavor now), and setting half in a ring mold. Then whip cream cheese w/ pecans, and when the jello begins to set, put the cream cheese in between in, then cover with the rest of the jello. It's actually really good. Cool, sweet, spicy, creamy, just a little salty (from the cream cheese), & nutty.

I'm not sure if others have mentioned it, but "lentil" is a candy industry term for little round candy. The infamous M&Ms are lentils. During Easter I love Mint Lentil candy. Dark chocolate mints covered in a pastel candy coating.

I used to add red hots to apple pie. Sprinkle 1/2 cup or so over the pie before you put the top crust on. Yummy!

My mom makes “Cinnamon Jello” every Christmas. She melts the cinnamon candies in cherry or strawberry jello (can’t remember which) and pours it over chopped walnuts, red apples and celery. It’s sooo yummy 🥰

I put red hots in my hot chocolate. About a tablespoon or so in the bottom of your mug before you add the hot chocolate. You can put a star light mint (the round white peppermints with red stripes) in the mug instead. The Lindt truffle balls make great hot chocolate too.

One of my family’s favorite recipes for the holidays is Red Hot Apples! Looks kind of atrocious with how weirdly red the apples get, but it’s so good. It gets baked and is like hot apple sauce with Red Hots!

Cinnamon candy jello mold was a thing in the 50s and 60s. I think it had strawberry jello and cream in it. Some type of canned fruit as well...pears or pineapple. My Mom made it for pot lucks.

I would probably Iike this pie without the pasta and with apples instead of pears. My grandmother from North Central North Carolina always used cinnamon spiced red apple slices to garnish our plates, so I grew up loving those flavors together. My grandmother probably would've loved this pie. I remember loving red hot hearts and atomkc fireball candy as a child. When I was 5/6 years old, in the early 1960s, I was allowed to have a running (up to $2 a month) credit account at the gas station/country store across the road from our house, I'd buy Red Hot Atomic Fireballs and I'd put a big atomic fireball in a glass full of hot water and wait for it to dissolve so I could have what I thought was a yummy spicy drink. $2 a month doesn't sound like much money but at the time the rent on our 3 bedroom house was $50 a month and most candy was just a penny or 2, a big candy bar was 5 cents. A coke or pepsi was 10 cents in a bottle. The drugstore in town sold 7 cent fountain sodas and 10 cent chili dogs. You could get a squirt of cherry syrup and or chocolate in your 7 cent cola drink for free.
