⬜ Tegu Day 5: The Roller-Coaster of Socializing

We took in a new tegu on short order which gives us an unexpected opportunity to discuss how to manage and gain the trust of a new animal that's a bit agro towards people. We will be expanding his enclosure soon as he will need more space than what we have, but for the time being we still want to record every interaction to show how some patience can bring around an animal that may otherwise be a little risky to handle.

This Tegu is Bubba and his behavior is probably a lot different than most due to him escaping not only his enclosure but got outside only 6 months after I rescued him and was thought to be lost to the wild. He spent 3 months living outside around the time of his first birthday before he was captured and put back into an enclosure

Are you saying the tegu should be named Bubuh or are thought talking about a tegu you had? I'm confused😊

Definitely, his eyes where closed right before the strike. He’s showing a lot more confidence though from the first and second interaction. Bravo good sir. One thing I’ve noticed to with certain lizards. The closer the the head the more nervous. This is pure speculation, but i believe they probably have bad memories attached to seeing a hand reach for their heads. Many people with hectic animals restrain them, normally securing the head and tail. He didn’t move at all until you reached for his head. May have some bad memories. Just a thought brother. Haven’t missed and episode keep at it man !

I love how they inspect all his food.. what i do i take repti boost by flukers and mix it up with pouch baby food veggies and fruit mixed.make the viscosity thick for meal and add more water for hydration. The repti boost helps fill in any gaps in his nutrition.and the baby food digests great ..

He wants another egg. lol. He’s trying as hard as you are. He showed you his teeth but he didn’t ’go for’ you. Great progress…….impressive progress. :)

Tegu's rear teeth are more for cracking hard food nuts, snails shells, hard insects, egg shells... They don't need to grind or chew up flowers/vegetation like a hoofed animal. Tegus dont eat much of any leaves or grass. In nature, the people who study their stomach contents show they eat over time, young to old, they eat insects all through life, nuts and berries, flowers, rodents, frogs, crawfish, small snakes, maybe a bird and bird/reptile eggs. They also take advantage of dead animals.

I keep prairie dogs. I was visiting a friend and fellow keeper and was interacting with one of her furry potatoes. He's not comfortable around strangers, as are all PDs, due to them being territorial and prey animals. Anyway, I was petting him and he was giving me all the body language I could need to tell me to stop. I fully understood, but ignored him. Finally, having enough, he turned and bit me on the top of my finger, both teeth going through the skin and touching under the skin. It was really quick and totally nonaggressive. He simply had enough. He told me "STOP!" in no uncertain terms. You ignore an animal's cues and you face the consequences.

I’m lucky enough to live near an Asian market so I can easily get a variety of seafood, quail eggs (which are supposed to be better), chicken hearts and livers, and greens. Mine will pick out her greens so I chop them fine with veggies and make meatballs 😂

He's not really bad at all, just seems a little nervous. As a general rule most tegus don't really like to be picked up for any length of time, although they do tame down very well.

He's doing good, will be good to get him past the bitey stage so he's more comfortable but it could definitely be a lot worse.

Wonder if he is just territorial in his enclosure. He seemed to forget about you when he saw that egg. It’s going to be interesting to see how he does out of his box.

Do Tegus use their tongues like snakes do? To "taste particles" and other sensory things? He sure looks calm around you. . What's he doing with his bowl? Don't you wish you could hear what they're thinking?
@IntrepidExotics
@IntrepidExotics 5 месяцев назад
They do, them and monitors both use their tongues to sense like snakes

Damn.. he's really antisocial...i thought for sure 5 days he'd be better. Was he abused by his previous owner? He sure acts liked it. In confused. He let's you pick him up. Why can't you pick him up and try to hold him on your lap? He didn't go nuts when you moved him up stairs... he didn't react at all!
