憑藉將光纖應用於通訊的研究，高教授於2009年獲頒諾貝爾物理學獎，但他並沒有為此申請專利，而是將技術開放，造福世界。
他二十年前為中大工程學院奠定的發展方向至今仍能配合大學、以至香港整體的發展。
For his study on fibre optics application in communication, Professor Kao was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2009. However, instead of applying for a patent, he shared the technology with the public to benefit the world.
